SHELVE OCTOBER 1 PROTEST, ADOPT DIALOGUE – MURIC

28th September, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

SHELVE OCTOBER 1 PROTEST, ADOPT DIALOGUE – MURIC

As some Nigerians prepare for the proposed protest against economic hardship on 1st October, 2024, a faith-based human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed for the cancellation of the protest. The group argued, among other reasons, that it is sacriledgeous for any group to pick Nigeria's independence day for a protest.

MURIC spoke on Saturday, 28th September, 2024, through its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He also gave other reasons:

"We are surprised that some Nigerians are planning to hold protests on our 64th independence anniversary. Protest on October 1 of any year in Nigeria amounts to a desecration of our value for freedom. It is tantamount to an assault on all the struggles of our founding fathers who fought tooth and nail to drive away the colonial master and usher in a much desired independence.

"It is not enough to contend that people in those advanced countries manifest patriotism because their leaders serve them loyally. Unlike us in Nigeria, their citizens gave everything to their countries. We must ask ourselves what we as citizens have done for our country. If we think our leaders are bad, have we looked at the citizens too? Objectivity demands that if we complain about bad leaders, we must also ponder over the bad citizens.

"What we need in this country is a sincere national dialogue between the rulers and the ruled. This culture of self-righteousness that has permeated the entire citizenry must be critically and objectively examined. We must not always blame the leaders or the police alone. We are all corrupt except for an infinitesimal few.

"MURIC admits that there is severe hunger in the land but Nigeria is not aloof in this category. We are not an island. Neither did our hunger start yesterday. We are also angry due to the pangs of hunger and starvation. But the solution to our problem cannot be found in the expression of our anger.

"Prophet Muhammad (SAW) warned that 'anger at the beginning is like madness while its end is regret.'

"Going on protest in a state of anger can lead to unpleasant incidents. We can do better by accepting the dialogue option which both the government and voluntary groups have offered. Jaw-jaw is always better than war-war. Even combatants always return to the round table after the war.

"Another reason for our appeal for calm is that the scars of the last #EndBadGovernance protest are still evident all around us. Puffs of smoke from burnt buildings and vehicles still rise in the Nigerian horizon. It is not so long ago: just a matter of weeks. A developing nation like ours cannot afford to engage in weekly self-destruction.

"Furthermore, can any of the planners of this October 1 protest guarantee that rabble-rousing elements will not hijack the protest? If it happened in the July 2024 protest despite promises to the contrary, how are we sure it would not happen in the October 1 protest?

"By the way, how are we certain that those who have tasted the deceitful wine of Leninist communism have not started sharing out Russian flags among misguided Nigerians just as it happened in the July protest? What of the luciferous invitation to the army to take over power during the last protest? Blinded by anger, protesters during the last outing failed to see the fifth columnists and bad losers egging them onto perfidy.

“Yet we recognize the right to hold protests. We cannot do otherwise as a human rights group. The right to protest is sacrosanct and inalienable but that right must not be abused. The right of a protester stops where that of a non-protester begins.

"For example, people who wish to celebrate independence on October 1 have the right to go to places to enjoy themselves. Protesters also have the right protest but they have no right to conduct themselves in such manners as to make it impossible for those who wish to do other things to go about their lawful businesses. That is the naked truth.

"MURIC asserts clearly, categorically and emphatically that the hunger ravaging the country is real. We therefore advise the Federal Government (FG) to show more commitment to the amelioration of the ongoing suffering among Nigerians. FG should also organize sincere national open dialogue and forgiveness sessions between the rulers and the ruled.

"Government officials should also avoid flamboyant living. We want to see genuine commitment to frugality in government's activities. The cost of governance in Nigeria is too high. It needs to be drastically reduced. Such reduction will leave more funds to provide for the teeming masses. A government that feels our pain will not mock us with daily festivities. If we must make sacrifices, we want to see what our leaders have sacrificed. Citizens cannot be working like elephants but eating like ants. Leaders must also lead by example.

“Nonetheless, we urge Nigerians to respect their country and to honour our independence anniversary which is October 1. We have no other country. We should train our children to respect their country, not to despise it.

“Americans are passionate about 4th July as the date in 1776 opened the gates of freedom unto them. The French hold 14th July most sacred as that was the day they witnessed the storming of the Bastille which signalled the beginning of the French revolution of 1789. The British idolise 15th June 1215 for it was on that date that King John affixed his seal on Magna Carta in a field at Runnymede. Let us give some respect to our Independence Day.

AU APPOINTMENT: WE ARE PROUD OF PANTAMI - MURIC

28th September, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

AU APPOINTMENT: WE ARE PROUD OF PANTAMI - MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has congratulated Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami who recently bagged a new appointment under the African Union (AU) as the Co-chairman of the African Scientific Research and Innovation Council (AU-ASRIC).

In the congratulatory message signed by Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Executive Director of the group, MURIC rejoiced with Professor Pantami for proving his mettle once again and referred to him as a worthy ambassador and a model per excellence for the youths.

The full statement reads:

"Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami was recently appointed by the African Union (AU) as a Co-chairman of the African Scientific Research and Innovation Council (AU-ASRIC https://dailytrust.com/au-gives-pantami-new-appointment/).

"We have always known that Pantami will go places. This man is loaded. He is a worthy ambassador of Nigeria and a model per excellence for our youths. Whereas some doubting Thomases and agent provocateur saw nothing good in him when he was serving here as the Minister of Communications and Digital Planning, Pantami has now been elevated to continental level. Their pull-him-down-syndrome (PhD) did not work on him.

"This is a very important appointment. Pantami will now be crafting the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) Policy and Strategy for the whole of Africa and the policy is expected to impact all the 54 countries on the African continent.

"It is our hope that Nigerians will learn one or two lessons from the rise of Pantami. Nigerians are immensely talented people but neither the people themselves nor the leaders appreciate what they have. Let us believe in our country. Let us have faith and confidence in ourselves and our true greatness will be realized.

"We congratulate Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami and wish him success in his new portfolio."

MURIC TO FG: WALK YOUR TALK AT THE UN

26th September, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC TO FG: WALK YOUR TALK AT THE UN

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended Vice President Kashim Shettima and the Federal Government (FG) for the bold and unequivocal stand of Nigeria on the ongoing genocide in Gaza as expressed in the address recently delivered by the Vice President at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79).

The group described the speech as insightful, penetrating, bold, arcane and cerebral. However, MURIC also demanded the immediate withdrawal of the Nigerian ambassador to Israel in order to drive home its message at the UN.

The full statement reads:

"Vice President Kashim Shettima did Nigeria proud on Tuesday, 24th September, 2024 when he delivered Nigeria's speech on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 79).

"Nigeria's demand for justice, freedom and full independence for the Palestinian people as expressed during the speech tallies with the wishes and aspirations of justice-loving Nigerians. This speech is insightful, penetrating, bold, arcane and cerebral.

"The state of Israel is a warmongering entity whose vocabulary lacks the words, ‘peace, tolerance and justice’. Unfortunately, America and its Western allies have turned the UN into a toothless bulldog. This is why the Zionists will continue to defy the UN and genocide in Palestine will continue ad infinitum unless concrete actions are taken by individual countries of the world who know the essence of peaceful coexistence.

"South Africa manifested its understanding of this concept when it dragged Israel to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) where Israel was indicted and the order was given for the arrest of Netanyahu. More countries are needed to demonstrate the world's resolve to stop Israel's intransigence and its endless crave for more blood.

"Just as Nigeria was at the forefront of the anti-apartheid struggle in Zimbabwe and South Africa, it is now the turn of Nigeria to move against Israel. We therefore charge Nigeria to walk its talk at the UN by withdrawing its ambassador to Israel with immediate effect in order to drive home its message at the UN."

PROVIDE ADEQUATE SECURITY FOR OGBOMOSO CHIEF IMAM – MURIC

24th September, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

PROVIDE ADEQUATE SECURITY FOR OGBOMOSO CHIEF IMAM – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed to the Oyo State Police Command to provide security for the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Shaykh Talhat Ayilara. The group said those who appointed another Islamic scholar as ‘palace Chief Imam’ while the substantive Chief Imam is still in office may have other sinister ideas.

MURIC expressed this fear in a statement issued on Tuesday, 24th September, 2024 by the Executive Director of the human rights organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

"It will be recalled that the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, Orumogege III, recently appointed a 'palace Imam' even though his palace has no mosque. It was allegedly stated that the 'palace Imam' would be representing the Muslim community in all dealings with the Oyo State government.

"The appointment also took place while there was a substantive Chief Imam for the town. It requires no crystal ball to know that the newly appointed 'palace Imam' is a reserved replacement for the substantive Chief Imam whenever ‘anything’ happens to the Chief Imam.

“The appointment of this ‘palace Imam’ while a substantive, capable and active Chief Imam is in office and performing naturally raises eyebrows. It is alien to the culture of Islam and it has never happened in Ogbomoso.

“This is where the security agencies need to show interest because those who were so desperate that they went as far as contriving to bring in a 'palace Imam' despite a court injunction may have other ideas.

"We commend the Oyo State Police Command for the neutral, professional and laudable role it has played in the matter so far. However, we appeal to the Command to make the safety of the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso one of his major security priorities. Prevention, they say, is always better than cure.

"This is important in order to maintain the peaceful atmosphere that the city of Ogbomoso in particular and Oyo State in general is well known for. There is no gainsaying the fact that the Imamate affair of Ogbomoso has attracted the attention of Nigerian Muslims as a whole.

"The Muslim Community in Nigeria is therefore watching with keen interest. The Chief Imam of Ogbomoso must not disappear into thin air."

GUARD YOUR PUBLIC UTTERANCES MURIC TELLS FORMER HEAD OF STATE (RTD)

18th September, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

GUARD YOUR PUBLIC UTTERANCES MURIC TELLS FORMER HEAD OF STATE (RTD)

Former military head of state, General AbdulSalami Abubakar was quoted yesterday, Tuesday as saying that the hardship in Nigeria is ‘getting out of control’. However, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has told Abubakar to guard his utterances.

MURIC's reaction was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday 18th September, 2024 by the Founder and Executive Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

"Former military head of state, General AbdulSalami Abubakar on Tuesday 17th September, 2024 allegedly said that the hardship in Nigeria is getting out of control. He also added that people could demonstrate peacefully (https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2024/09/17/abdulsalami-hardship-in-nigeria-is-getting-out-of-control/).

"We are alarmed by the tone of this statement. It is an extreme language to say things are getting ‘out of control’. We do not expect a former head of state to use such strong words when describing the current situation in the country.

"Of course we all know that things are hard but to describe them as getting out of control is to expect people to also go out of control. There is a milder way to put it and the retired general knows it, having been trained in the use of diplomatic language before, at least while in Aso Rock himself.

"Undiplomatic and unparliamentary languages are capable of inflaming the populace. The retired general could have done better. As a former head of state and an elder statesman, the retired general has a duty to act in loco parentis. He is still one of our fathers. He could have reminded his immediate audience (a delegation of the Campaign for Democracy) of the global nature of the economic hardship which Nigerians are facing.

"The former head of state also added during his speech yesterday that people could demonstrate though he asked them to shun violence. Coming from a leader who witnessed the last #EndBadGovernance demonstrations a few weeks ago and the human and material losses it brought upon the country, the least we can say is that we are disappointed.

"Every right-thinking Nigerian knows that there is nothing like peaceful conduct in the vocabulary of Nigerian demonstrators of this age. General AbdulSalami Abubakar (rtd) himself saw the irrational behaviors exhibited by demonstrators during their last outing. How could he have encouraged another of such outing so soon?

"His belated advice to government is unnecessary because both the federal and state governments have been implementing all of them even before he mentioned them. It is however sad that he could come out publicly to condemn the sharing of palliatives which, in actual fact, has saved the lives of many poor Nigerians.

"We advise the retired general to channel his future admonitions to government directly to Aso Rock since he has access to the seat of power as a much respected former head of state. He must also endeavour as much as possible to remain neutral particularly in his position as leader of the Nigerian Peace Committee.

“Nigerians still respect General Abubakar as the only former military head of state who promised to hand over to civilians within one year and kept his words. He did not allow the perquisites of office to sway him. This is one of the reasons he still remains relevant in the Nigerian political scene.

“MURIC advises those who are planning to demonstrate on 1st October to shelve the idea and adopt dialogue. They should consider several efforts being made by the Federal Government to ameliorate the present economic hardship. Keeping demonstrations peaceful in the Nigeria of today is either sheer wishful thinking or a deliberate skullduggery to spread pandemonium. Demonstration is a square peg, the end result is often a round hole.”

GIVE TRAIN STATIONS BETTER ACCESS ROADS – MURIC

17th September, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

GIVE TRAIN STATIONS BETTER ACCESS ROADS – MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed to the federal and state governments to give all train stations in the country better access roads. Although the group commended the Federal Government (FG) for providing the trains and their ultramodern stations, it described the access roads that lead to the stations as 'fish out of the water, spoilers and kill-joys'.

MURIC spoke on Tuesday, 17th September, 2024 through its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

"Our attention has been called to the very poor condition of the access roads to Nigerian train stations. While the Federal Government (FG) deserves encomiums for providing such vital infrastructure like trains all over the country, we observe that the access roads to the train stations were not considered in the original plan.

"This left the access roads in poor and rough conditions thereby making them looking like fish out of water, spoilers and kill-joys. They just do not fit into the aesthetics of the beautiful architectural structure of the train stations. Besides, the bad access roads expose travelers to the dangers of robbery and kidnapping.

"Those access roads need the urgent attention of the authorities including the Federal Government (FG), the relevant state governments as well as the Federal Ministry of Transport.

"Rehabilitating and upgrading the access roads to train stations will attract more passengers for the trains and reduce the stress on our roads. It will also ameliorate the suffering of Nigerians encountered during interstate journeys."
