MAN WHO CALLED FOR KILLING OF REMI TINUBU RETRACTS

27th February, 2024

PRESS RELEASE

MAN WHO CALLED FOR KILLING OF REMI TINUBU RETRACTS

A man who said President Tinubu's wife, Remi Tinubu, should be killed, has reached out to the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) and retracted his words. The man, identified as Sanusi Abubakar, who was pretending to be an Islamic scholar, has reached out to MURIC, withdrawing his wild, thoughtless, provocative, reckless and misguided call for the killing of Senator Remi Tinubu, wife of the Nigerian president.

Reacting to the press statement released by MURIC on Friday 23rd February, 2024, a man, identified as Sanusi Abubakar who was pretending to be an Islamic scholar, has reached out to MURIC, withdrawing all his wild, thoughtless, provocative, reckless and misguided calls for the killing of Senator Remi Tinubu, the wife of Mr President.

MURIC headquarters had condemned and disowned the man in its statement on Friday, the same day that he made his senseless call.

In a 2 minutes, 24 seconds video clip sent to the Sokoto Chapter of MURIC on Monday, 26th February, 2024, Sanusi Abubakar completely and entirely retracted his offensive statements which were capable of breeding mayhem, social combustion and religious unrest of unknown proportions.

Commenting on the video clip, on Monday 26th February, 2024, the Kano State Chairman of the rights group,  Malam Hassan Sani Indabawa said, "The man apparently realised his egregious gaffe by reaching out to MURIC to register the withdrawal of his wild call by agreeing with MURIC that, his teachings are misleading, his claims are false and his extremist views are capable of pushing some ignorant youths into unnecessary violence.

"The man further admitted that his claims were unislamic and without any basis in Islam. He claimed to have been driven by political considerations, and had made the wild statement during the 2023 presidential campaign, thus exposing how some Nigerians are being influenced by desperate and unscrupulous politicians who sponsor misguided elements to propagate hate and divisive politics on the pulpit.

"MURIC calls on Muslim and Christian leadership in Nigeria to critically look into the involvement of some clerics in partisan politics by devising ways and means of regulating their sermons and preachings in order to avoid hate campaigns and instead, encourage them to promote understanding and peaceful coexistence.

"MURIC further observed how some clerics, out of desperation for fame and material gratification, succumb to involvement in partisan politics, thereby attracting disgrace and humiliation to themselves in an attempt to serve the interest of some corrupt politicians. Those are the types of clerics who Shaykh Uthman bin Fodio (1754- 1817) identified as Ulamaul- Suu (the scholars of evil).

"However, MURIC notes with delight how the Sokoto man admitted his wrongdoing in remorse and regret. It takes a considerable courage and sincere intention for a man to admit his mistakes and pronounce his remorse and regrets. We hope Nigerians and the First Family will accept his apology.

"Lastly, MURIC warns other politically inclined clerics to desist from further heating the polity. We charge the security agencies to spare no effort in identifying, tracking and neutralizing the threats posed by such deeply partisan and unpatriotic religious fanatics, sponsored by some self seeking, desperate, reckless and unpatriotic politicians whose sole objective is to grab power at all costs.

GLOBAL ECONOMY CONTRACTING, PRICES RISING – MURIC

26th February, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

GLOBAL ECONOMY CONTRACTING, PRICES RISING – MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has alerted Nigerians that the economy of the world is contracting while prices are rising everywhere. The group concluded that shrinking economies all over the world should be a lesson for Nigerians to stop blaming their leaders for the current economic situation in the world. It also advised the youth to make themselves assets to the country instead of making themselves liabilities.

The outcome of MURIC’s review of economies around the world was contained in a statement issued on Monday, 26th February, 2024. The statement was signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“As a result of the hyper-inflation which is currently being experienced in Nigeria and the attendant hunger, anger among the citizenry and frustration among the masses of our people, MURIC did a review of the global economy to find out experiences in other parts of the world.

“The world has not seen anything near this since the Great Depression of 1929 – 1939. In the seventy years since 1950, the world economy has experienced four global economic crises (1975, 1982, 1991, and 2009) but none has been as terrible as this.

“Britain recently revealed a 0.3 percent contraction in the fourth quarter of 2023 and has officially entered a recession. Also, two of the world's leading economies, Japan and the UK, recently entered recession. Of course this reveals the financial struggles that most countries have been facing after the Covid-19 global pandemic (https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/trade/exports/insights/charting-the-global-economy-uk-japan-fell-into-recession-at-the-end-of-2023/articleshow/107789836.cms?from=mdr).

“The war between Russia and Ukraine catapulted the price of wheat beyond the rational. Bread became gold in average homes around the world. Riots broke out on the streets of Paris, Frankfurt and other major cities of the world. Britain changed three prime ministers in twelve months.

“Even China is facing a banking and real estate crisis. Pope Francis just moved all of the church’s financial and liquid assets from all other banks to the Vatican Bank over this same global economic crisis (https://www.catholicworldreport.com/2022/08/23/pope-francis-instructs-vatican-entities-to-move-all-funds-to-vatican-bank-by-sept-30/). There are food shortages all over the world.

“These are signs of a global recession. Sometimes we are faced with helpless situations. That is when we must make the best out of the situation. The tough gets going when the going gets tougher. It is not an isolated Nigerian phenomenon. It is not a product of bad leadership.

“We must confess that social media, as volatile as it is, helped us in this task of reviewing economies worldwide. It provided us with some video clips in which we saw real life experiences of people concerning prices of goods in their countries of residence.

“One of the video clips reviewed by MURIC showed a middle-aged man who drove into a fuel station in the United Kingdom (UK). He bought 29 litres of fuel but he was shocked when he saw the cost was 50 British pounds. He was livid with anger and he complained bitterly.

“In another video clip, a man who is probably a Nigerian living in the United States (US) went into a mall to do some shopping. He found that the label on a single plantain was one dollar.

“A simple conversion exercise will show us that the 29 litres of fuel which cost 50 British pounds in the UK is equivalent to N100,000 (one hundred thousand naira) while the plantain which was bought at $1 in the US is equal to N1,700 (one thousand nine hundred Nigerian naira).

“It proves that fuel is cheaper in Nigeria than in Britain even after the increment. Plantain, and other food items by extension, are also cheaper in this country than in the US. At least one litre of petrol in Nigeria is still around N650 and 29 litres of that will come down to N18,850 and we are still buying five or six plantains at N1,000 depending on the size. It means what will buy just one plantain in Britain will give you five or six in Nigeria. Allah bless Nigeria.

“Another video clip called attention to certain major signs in global economy. It showed that in 2023, exempli gratia,  the British pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985. Ditto for the euro which is currently at its 20 year low. The US had two lowest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) quarters. By definition, this is a recession.

A member of MURIC who ‘japa-d’ to UK just last year with his wife and three children has been raining a plethora of complaints down from his place of sojourn. He called us specifically to advice Nigerians on the true situation of things outside the country.

“He regrets bringing his kids to Britain as they now constitute a liability. He cannot afford their school fees and the children have to stay at home. Consequently, his wife, who would have been earning additional income to support the family could not do so because she has to remain at home to take care of the children. They know that British police will knock on their door the moment any of those kids starts crying. No one dares abandon children at home in the UK.

“Nigerians already caught in the web of ‘japa’ syndrome are therefore advised to ‘japada’ (i.ereturn home), particularly if things are worse in the foreign country. Come back to help in the restoration of the Nigerian economy instead of building that of another country.

“Now, before you join any anti-inflation demonstration, before you burn a government property, call your friend, brother or sister in the ‘japa’ entrapment to ask them how much is a litre of petrol, a bar of bathing soap, one stick of banana, etc, over there.

“Ask them how they are coping with electricity, water, parking and other bills. Their response will make you realise that we are being spoon-fed in Nigeria but we do not appreciate it.

“Things are rough across the world. It is not an isolated Nigerian phenomenon. It is not a product of bad leadership. Let us therefore not demonise our current leaders for a circumstantial global economic issue over which they have no influence.

“MURIC has great respect for all our founding fathers. They are incompatible with our current leaders and we will not denigrate any of them for any reason. But even if we bring back all our beloved past heroes and founding fathers, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello, Alhaji Tafawa Balewa, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, they will have a daunting task on their hands because they cannot operate outside the global economic system which is already toxic.

“The world is now a tiny global village and Nigeria is not an island. Stop wheat from coming out of Ukraine, stop oil from coming out of the Middle East, stop raw materials from coming out of sub-Saharan Africa and the world will stop breathing. It is called globalization.

“Nigerians should therefore learn to stop the blame game and become proactive and productive. Above all, we all must strive to become assets of sorts to the country, not liabilities relying on what the government can do for us without any attempt to do something for our dear country.

“In the face of the current hardship, MURIC advises Nigerians who have the means presently to have cash reserves enough for six months living and business expenses, reduce or completely stop all unnecessary expenses, avoid unnecessary yet costly trips outside your comfort zone, suspend involvement in all social gatherings and clubs, cancel subscriptions that you never use, minimise high interest debts and find something extra to do which will fetch you additional income.

“Whatever you do, anyway, do not allow bitter politicians and frustrated elements to make you demarket or destroy your country.”

ARRANT NONSENSE: MURIC REPLIES MAN WHO SAID REMI TINUBU SHOULD BE KILLED

23rd February, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

ARRANT NONSENSE: MURIC REPLIES MAN WHO SAID REMI TINUBU SHOULD BE KILLED

A video emerged today Friday, 23rd February, 2024 in which a man dressed like an Islamic scholar was calling for the killing of Nigeria's First Lady and wife of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the basis of her being a Christian and a pastor.

However, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has disowned the man in the video. The organization said his teachings are misleading, his claims are false while his identity is spurious and ambiguous. He is not known as an Islamic scholar. The group therefore appealed to the First Family and the rest of Nigerians to ignore him.

Akintola said :

"In a video clip that went viral today, Friday 23rd February, 2024, a man who dressed like an Islamic scholar was seen calling for the killing of Nigeria's First Lady and wife of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the basis of her being a Christian and a pastor.

"We hereby declare the video clip as arrant nonsense, arbitrary, absurd and a product of misguidance, misinformation and maradonised religiousity. It is saddening, most unfortunate. It is not impossible that this is a product of political machination with malicious intent to cause mayhem.

“He is definitely not an Islamic scholar. His spoken words indicate that he knows next to nothing about Islam. We are constrained to write him off as a mere rabble-rouser. He is either an agent of those whose sole aim is to destabilise the country, an attention seeker or an eminently qualified tenant for a psychiatric home.

“This man’s teachings are misleading, his claims are false while his identity is spurious and ambiguous. He is not known as an Islamic scholar. We therefore appeal to the First Family and the rest of Nigerians to ignore him while Muslim leaders in the North try to identify him with a view to guiding him properly.

“All efforts made by MURIC to identify the man failed so far because he is neither popular nor is he a known Islamic scholar. One of the leaders of MURIC in the North said, ‘I have watched and listened to the man and of all the popular Islamic scholars in the north, this is the first time I am coming across this man.

“The MURIC leader added, ‘From his accent, he is a Sokoto or Kebbi man and our MURIC Sokoto or Kebbi should be able to identify him. Definitely this man lacks knowledge in Islam, he holds an extremist view and should therefore be reported to the security agencies for appropriate sanctions. These are the zealots who pushed the ignorant youths into extremism and violence. He is not representing Islam and should therefore be disowned and condemned’.

"Nothing in the Glorious Qur'an, the Hadith and the Sunnah justifies the man's clangorous diatribes against the First Lady. His claims are false, malicious, baseless and therefore unacceptable by any standard whatsoever.

"The cleric's pronouncement stands in contra-distinction to the true teachings of Islam which promotes mutual cooperation between Muslims and their neighbors regardless of differences in faith or ethnicity. The Qur’an forbids the killing of innocent people even if they are not Muslims (Glorious Qur’an 5:32).

"The man failed to provide any verse of the Qur'an, Hadith or Sunnah which supports his dubious claim. He should therefore be ignored and his pronouncement regarded as the rantings of a misguided person. At best, his pronouncement may be regarded as politically motivated.

"Meanwhile we remind religious leaders of the need to be careful with their pronouncements. Their followers consider their statements as the gospel truth, even sometimes as commandments. Reckless utterances from them are capable of causing social combustion the outcome of which no one can fathom.

"For instance, the man's thoughtless declaration in the video clip came at a time when the First Lady had just paid a visit to Kano. She was there a week ago commissioning some projects. What would have happened if the his provocative statement had come two weeks earlier? What are the dimensions if she has to pay another visit to any other northern state before 2027? Should we begin to have palpitations of the heart?

"Whoever knows this man should caution him. We declare, nonetheless, that his pronouncement does not represent the view of the rest of the Ummah. To us, the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, is a pleasant woman, a good wife and a mother of all. She has always comported herself with decorum, her language has always been parliamentary while her demeanor has been graceful at all times.

"We assure the First Lady and all members of the First Family of the love and solidarity of Nigerian Muslims. We urge them to put this ugly incident behind them.

"We advise Islamic scholars of Northern extraction to identify and call the man behind this atrocious and horrendous video to order. We demand a retraction from him because his declaration is capable of causing an implosion within the Ummah.

"Finally, while leaders and members of MURIC in the Northern states are making efforts to identify the scholar in the video, we implore the security agencies to handle the matter with utmost tact and professionalism taking full cognisance of the present situation in the country and the pronouncements of certain dignitaries from both the North and South."

HARDSHIP: GOVERNORS, SENATORS, REPS MUST WAKE UP – MURIC

23rd February, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

HARDSHIP: GOVERNORS, SENATORS, REPS MUST WAKE UP – MURIC

A faith-based non-governmental organization (NGO) has called on state governors in the country to make proper use of the extra funds shared from subsidy withdrawal to alleviate the suffering of people in their states. The group said state governors should ease the pressure on Abuja.

It also reminded citizens to stop concentrating on the Federal Government when in actual fact the governors collect monthly allocations on their behalf. However, the group lauded the efforts of Borno and Lagos state governors.

The human rights group, which spoke under the aegis of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), made its case in a statement titled, ‘Hardship: Governors must wake up’. The statement which was distributed to the media on Friday, 23rd February, 2024, was signed by the group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“We note with pleasure the concern shown by the Federal Government (FG) and the various efforts it is putting in place to alleviate the sufferings of the jamaahiir (masses). This is the hallmark of a responsible and sensitive administration. The various steps taken by FG in the last seven days have proved that this administration has genuine interest in the welfare of Nigerians.

“Among the steps taken by the FG are aggressive agricultural initiatives involving thousands of hectares of land, voting of humongous amounts of money to the agriculture sector, releasing thousands of metric tons in grains and supplying 2,000 tractors to farmers to promote mechanical agriculture around the country and ensure food security. No past government has ever come this far.

“It is also an open secret that FG in recent times tripled allocations given to state governments. This is in order to enable them to take care of citizens in the state and to cushion the effect of subsidy removal on them (https://saharareporters.com/2024/02/18/we-increased-funds-states-after-subsidy-removal-do-what-youre-elected-and-stop).

“Apart from their monthly allocations which was tripled, all the 36 governors were also given N30 billion each for the same purpose (https://solacebase.com/hardship-akpabio-exposes-governors-says-each-state-gets-n30bn-to-ameliorate-inflation/#google_vignette). Just yesterday, FG moved to fix prices of rice, yam, gari and other items (https://opr.news/news/detail/dec8cd6b3a491a3d9de2c4ab634e690b).

“It therefore behoves the governors to provide additional palliatives as well as lasting succour for the current hardship being experienced by Nigerians. It is imperative that state governors demonstrate equal concern for the plight of the people the same way that FG is taking the matter with all seriousness.

“We can single out two or three governors who have shown this concern and who have been dishing out support to their people. Topmost among them is the governor of Borno, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum. He is closely followed by the Lagos State governor.

“The Borno governor has been thinking outside the box. He distributes cash, vehicles (including solar-driven cabs to drivers as taxi), machineries, foodstuff including thousands of bags of rice, etc. Maiduguri is one place in Nigeria where the cost of transport is cheapest today.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has set up special markets where goods are sold at low prices. He has also reduced the number of workdays for civil servants to three per week (https://www.crimechannels.com/breaking-government-announces-25-per-cent-slash-in-transport-fare/). This will bring great relief to workers.

“Sanwo-Olu also spiced his relief package with free delivery for pregnant women in government hospitals and rebate in some drugs (https://www.nigerianewspapersonline.net/news/sanwo-olu-announces-free-delivery-in-government-hospitals-rebate-in-some-drugs/).

“Sanwo-Olu capped the edifice with the announcement of 25% slash in transport fare (https://www.crimechannels.com/breaking-government-announces-25-per-cent-slash-in-transport-fare/). Lagos and Ogun have also started joint patrol of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to reduce the fear of insecurity (https://www.crimechannels.com/insecurity-police-in-lagos-ogun-begin-joint-patrol-on-lagos-ibadan-expressway/).

“The governor of Kano has also put smiles on the lips of Muslims in the state who have been nursing fears concerning how to cope in the coming Ramadan season with prices sky-rocketing daily. Their fear is real because these are people who have been on artificial ‘fasting’ months before Ramadan due to the present economic doldrum. But the state governor has assured them of government’s support by instituting a Ramadan Feeding Committee (https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2024/02/22/kano-govt-inaugf Nigerians. urates-ramadan-feeding-committee/).

“These and other measures being put in place across the country will suppress citizens’ fears and mitigate their sufferings. These are exactly what all state governors, senators, representatives and local government chairmen should engage in.

“The line of demarcation between the role of the president, the governor, the senator, reps and local government chairmen on issues of providing relief for the electorate is thinner than the threads of a cobweb particularly where there is an enlightened electorate.

“We therefore call on all the 36 state governors, the senators, reps and local government chairmen particularly those who are yet to showcase efforts being made in their states on the issue of relief packages in these trying times to wake up and perform. People are hungry. The sick cannot afford drugs. Parents are in excruciating pain as they watch their children gnawing at near-empty plates.

“We urge state governors to make proper use of the extra funds shared from subsidy withdrawal to alleviate the suffering of people in their states. There is too much pressure on Abuja. State governors should ease the pressure on the presidency.

“That is how it should be because money realized from subsidy withdrawal is being shared between Abuja and the states. It is articulated irresponsibility for any state governor to stand akimbo after collecting monthly allocation plus an extra N30 billion while Abuja suffocates under tension. Who does that?

“Politics apart, state governments must be on the same page with FG particularly on this issue of ameliorating the sufferings of Nigerians during these hard times. Governors must avoid playing politics with the lives of Nigerians. Hunger will not check party cards in your pocket. It is your purchasing power that matters. This is why every governor must cooperate with FG in its efforts to rubber-cushion the present hardship.

“State governors should emulate the good initiatives of others. It is when states copy the good things in other states that good governance will spread. Our citizens will notice the change. They will see their leaders’ goodwill. The restiveness in the land will subside. Even activists will shun calls for protest and professional troublemakers will become isolated.

“To Nigerians in their respective states we have this message: You must be conscious of your Allah-given fundamental human rights. Your governors, senators, representatives and local government chairmen are your servants. They are there to serve you. They are in office by your mandate.

“Stop focusing on Abuja alone. Ask your governor questions about the monthly allocations collected on your behalf. In particular, ask him what he has done with the N30 billion recently collected by him from Abuja.

“Just before Christmas Nigeria’s 109 senators collected N200 million worth of bags of rice from FG. Their 360 counterparts in the House of Representatives also collected palliatives worth N100 million (https://leadership.ng/share-tinubu-rice-now-muric-tells-nass-members/). Did you get anything from them? This is the time to interrogate your senators and reps. It is your right.

“Do you know anything about your senators’ and reps’ constituency projects? Do you even know their constituency offices? Ask your chairman what he is doing with funds received by him. They all owe you explanations.

“As a parting shot, MURIC reminds Nigerians to stop concentrating on the FG for all their problems. We must ease this tension on Abuja so that it can have more time to make better plans for good governance.”
