PLATEAU’S ALL-CHRISTIAN SECURITY COMMITTEE IS PAROCHIAL – MURIC

1st February, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

PLATEAU’S ALL-CHRISTIAN SECURITY COMMITTEE IS PAROCHIAL – MURIC

The governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang yesterday appointed an eleven-man security committee. However, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has accused the governor of nursing anti-Muslim sentiments for failing to include a single Muslim in his 11-man security committee.

MURIC’s accusation was contained in a press release issued by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday, 1st February, 2024.

He said:

“The Executive Governor of Plateau State, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has constituted an 11-man security committee. However, all members of the committee are Christians.

“This move lacks tact. It also suffers desertification of decorum, total absence of diplomatic acumen and acute dearth of parliamentary behaviour.

“For a state facing one of the worst security threats in the country, Governor Mutfwang has just exposed himself as unprepared for lasting peaceful settlement of the ongoing crisis in Plateau. All he cares about is how to eliminate Muslims and Fulanis from the state.

“With large numbers of people being killed in the state on a regular basis and with the general knowledge that the brouhaha is between indigenes of the state and residents who have settled there more than a hundred years ago, Mutfwang is still yet to realise that he as the leader needs to carry all parties along if he wants genuine peace. His latest move has exposed his anti-Muslim body language.

“A letter containing the list of members of the security committee and dated 29th January, 2024 was signed by the Secretary to the government of Plateau State, Arc. Samuel Jatau. The Committee has AVM Napoleon Bali (rtd) and Jatau himself as Chairman and secretary respectively. All remaining nine members are also Christians.

“MURIC strongly condemns the composition of this committee. It is parochial, archaic and prebendal. Nothing objective can come out of such a highly partisan committee. It is also a declaration of total war on Muslims in the state.

“The governor of Plateau State is living in self-denial. In his illusion, he believes that the solution to the Plateau crisis lies in the hands of the indigenes alone. But whoever heard of an orchestra pianist who swore to use only one key colour. What kind of music will he produce? To get the best tunes from a piano, one needs both the white and black keys. We hope Mutfwang is listening.

“Neither the governor nor the indigenes can deceive Nigerians. Not anymore. Not long after they have been caught pants down over the General Alkali affair during which even their women joined in the attempt to fool the army who came searching for the late general’s body. Not long after that the indigenes killed dozens of Muslims travelling through Jos. Not all Nigerians suffer from general amnesia.

“Like Joshua Dariye before him who declared that Plateau State is a Christian state, like Jonah Jang who supervised the killing of a large number of Muslims under him, Mutfwang has failed in state craft and fallen short of the grace of leadership. Only those who can tolerate the minority succeed in the art of statesmanship.

“The panacea to the Plateau imbroglio lies in carrying all stakeholders along. It is high time the Plateau Governor came down his high horse and realized that even as executive governor of a whole state he cannot clap with one hand.”

ALLOW TRAVELLERS TO USE MONIYA TRAIN STATION MOSQUE

30th January, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

ALLOW TRAVELLERS TO USE MONIYA TRAIN STATION MOSQUE

An Islamic human rights advocacy group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has accused the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station, Moniya, Ibadan, of disallowing travellers from accessing the station's mosque for Salat (obligatory prayer). The group said the move was religiously motivated. It therefore called on the authorities to stop further restriction of worshippers in the mosque.

The demand was contained in a press release issued on Monday, 29th January, 2024 by the Executive Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"The authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station, Moniya, Ibadan, have been disallowing travellers from accessing the station's mosque for Salat (obligatory prayer) for the past three months.

"Reports reaching us from Muslim travellers who passed through Moniya train station indicate that only staff of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) are being allowed to pray there while travellers for whom the station was actually built are not allowed to pray there since the past three months, particularly the Friday Jumu'ah prayer.

"The station manager allegedly gave orders that no traveller should be allowed to observe prayer there since an incident involving a Muslim female traveller who returned to the mosque to pick her forgotten rosary during boarding period.

"This is not good enough. It appears religiously motivated. Someone somewhere is allergic to seeing Muslims around in large numbers worshipping their Lord and Creator. He wants to stop them. He wants to isolate Muslim staff of the station from the rest of their Nigerian brothers and sisters. We will not allow that to happen.

"MURIC appeals to the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station, Moniya, Ibadan, to stop restricting the use of the station mosque. The incident involving the Muslim lady who forgot her rosary is an isolated case. It is a flimsy excuse. It should not be used to deprive other Muslim travellers their Allah-given fundamental human right to worship their Creator at the appointed time of Salat.

"Apart from the Friday Jumu'ah prayer which is observed once weekly, Muslims must pray five times daily (Subh, Zuhr, 'Asr, Magrib and 'Ishai) and those five times are fixed and well known. The Glorious Qur'an says, 'Verily indeed, the times for Salat are well fixed' (Qur'an 4:103).

"Incidentally two of those five times (Zuhr and 'Asr) fall within working period in Nigeria (approximately around 2 and 4 pm). This is why Muslims must have mosques around them every time. It explains why Muslims demand for the provision of prayer facilities in their workplaces. It is not for spiritual flamboyance. Rather, it is a religious necessity.

"Man is body, soul and spirit. We can use our bodies to serve our employers, whether government or private. But we must be allowed to use our souls to serve our Almighty Creator, Allah. That is one thing nobody should seek to control.

"Any attempt to do this is an infringement on our right to worship and a violation of Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended 2011). Disallowing Muslim travellers from accessing the station mosque at any point in time constitutes a violation of the above provision. This is where the station authorities erred. They should not have prevented Muslim travellers from using the mosque.

"A Muslim is not complete if after satisfying matter (body), his or her soul is left unattended to. Muslims prefer to be soul-satisfied, even if they remain matter-dissatisfied. For matter will perish, no matter how long. The soul lives forever, for it is from Allah and unto Allah it will return for accountability. This is why Muslims do not joke with times of obligatory prayer (salat).

"We therefore implore the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo Railway Station, Moniya, Ibadan, to lift all forms of restrictions in and around the station's mosque in order to allow Muslim worshipers to pray"

ONDO DEPUTY GOV: NONE LIKE TINUBU IN THE SOUTH WEST

26th January, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

ONDO DEPUTY GOV: NONE LIKE TINUBU IN THE SOUTH WEST

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has concluded that there is none like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu among the governors and political leaders of the South West. This was sequel to the appointment yesterday of Chief Olayide Adelami as the new deputy governor of Ondo State by Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa.

The Islamic human rights organization based its conclusion on the governor's failure to pick a Muslim as his deputy despite demands to that effect from various Islamic bodies, including MURIC.

This position was made known in a press statement issued on Friday, 26th January, 2024 by the group's Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa yesterday appointed Chief Olayide Adelami, a Christian, as the new deputy governor of Ondo State.

"This appointment, in our opinion, is a direct rejection of the appeals made by several Islamic organizations including the Muslim community of Ondo State which controls about 40% of the total population. It also mirrors the insensitivity of Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa to the yearnings and aspirations of Muslims in Ondo State.

"The appointment further demonstrates the total lack of hypocrisy in the mantra of ‘religious tolerance’ as publicly brandished by Christian leaders and their politicians in the South West. If there is any scintilla of religious tolerance and inclusiveness, it has been coming from the Muslim politicians and the Muslim population in the region.

"Whereas President Bola Ahmed Tinubu sought to embrace inclusiveness and religious tolerance by giving top appointments to Christians, none of the Christian governors in the South West reciprocated by giving Muslims a similar treatment.

"Sanwo-Olu of Lagos gave the Christians 43 commissioners but he gave Muslims a meager 14. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State gave Christians 16 but he gave Muslims 4 only. In Oyo State, Seyi Makinde gave Christians 10 commissioners but gave Muslims 6.

"The worst is Osun State where the Christian governor, Ademola Adeleke keeps deceiving the people that he is a Muslim. He also has a Christian deputy. That is the extent of executive fraud. Despite this Christian-Christian ticket in Osun State, the number of Christian commissioners is 17 while that of Muslims is just 7.

“Ondo has 15 Christian commissioners against only 2 Muslims while Christian commissioners in Ekiti are 24 while the Muslims have 1 (one) only.

"Who is like Tinubu among the six Christian governors in Yorubaland? There is none. Who can treat Yoruba Muslims with the same magnanimity which Tinubu extended to Christians at federal level? None that we know of.

“History will attest to Tinubu as the Muslim president who extended inclusiveness to hitherto hostile Christians. The annals will register Ayetilewa as the Christian governor of Ondo who could not stomach the thought of having a Muslim deputy. Chroniclers will not spare the intolerant Christian governors of Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun and Ekiti who used their proverbial teeth to share the common patrimony of the South West but whom only Allah knows what they kept for their Christian brethren.

“Muslims are under heavy siege in the South West. They have become endangered species, oppressed, depressed, repressed, underemployed, overworked, underpaid, mere fish for evangelical fishermen, falcons caged for the falconer."

MURIC CONDEMNS PLATEAU CRISIS, APPEALS FOR CALM

19th January, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC CONDEMNS PLATEAU CRISIS, APPEALS FOR CALM

About eight people have been confirmed dead while six mosques and two churches have been burnt in Mangu as violence spreads in Mangu Local Government of Plateau State. Meanwhile an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has appealed to the combatants for calm.

The group spoke on Thursday, 25th January, 2024 via a press statement issued by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

“The death toll in the raging crisis in Mangu, Plateau State, has reached eight. Six mosques and two churches have been burnt. The burnt mosques include a central mosque, the Anguwan Dawo Jumat Mosque. An Islamic school, Audi Islamiyyah, was also burnt. The two burnt churches, Deden and Assemblies of God’s Church are located in Sabon-Kasuwa in Dercom and Alogom areas of Mangu. Both belong to COCIN.

“MURIC denounces this wanton destruction of lives and properties, particularly houses of worship which should be respected. It is barbaric and satanic. We must learn to coexist peacefully.

“We note with serious concern the consistent consistency of attacks on Northern Muslims who live in Plateau State. We find it noteworthy that although Southern Christians of the South East and South West also reside in large numbers in Plateau State, it is the Northern Muslims who are always targeted for killing. The others have never been attacked.

“The fact that all the eight people who died in the riot are Muslims point to where the aggression first started as well as the targets of the attacks. Reports gathered from the Plateau State branch of MURIC and that of the Jamaat Nasril Islam (JNI) states that the crisis started on Tuesday, 23rd January, 2024.

“The reports also affirm that the security outfits in ‘Operation Rainbow’ are partisan as there are complaints that Muslims and their mosques did not receive adequate protection, a situation which made it possible for the Christian youths to burn as many as eight mosques while only two churches were affected.

“We charge the security agents to be fair to all. Partisanship in the security agencies can cause irreparable damage. It can also allow the crisis to escalate beyond imagination.

“We appeal to the people of Mangu in particular and Plateau State in general to stop all forms of hostility. They should cooperate with law enforcement agencies. The name of Plateau State has become synonymous with killing and destruction. This has started to scare prospective investors, tourists and visitors away from the state. This is bound to affect the state’s economy.”

MUSLIM DEPUTY GOV IN ONDO IS INCLUSIVITY - MURIC

21th January, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MUSLIM DEPUTY GOV IN ONDO IS INCLUSIVITY - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has added its voice to the call for a Muslim deputy governor in Ondo State. The Islamic human rights organization spoke on Sunday, 21st January, 2024 via its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"The office of deputy governor has been vacant since the assumption of office of Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa.

"As a multireligious state with a large Muslim population, the new governor will be injecting a heavy dose of interfaith tolerance and inclusivity by picking a Muslim as his deputy.

"Muslims in Ondo State have a long history of political alienation, economic marginalisation and social ostracisation. Their complaints have become legendary but nobody ever listened.

"Governor Aiyedatiwa will be chatting an entirely new course if he can change all these by giving Muslims in Ondo State special attention this time around. The governor has no problem identifying suitable candidates as eminently qualified Muslims abound in all sectors in the state and some of them have been active in Ondo politics."

MURIC SAYS ABDUCTION FOR CHRIST MUST STOP

20TH JANUARY, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC SAYS ABDUCTION FOR CHRIST MUST STOP

— Calls for stiffer punishment for perpetrators

The Kano State Police Command, on 27th December, 2023, said it had dismantled a human trafficking syndicate that specialised in the abduction, buying, and selling of Muslim minors. No fewer than nine suspects operating around Kano, Bauchi, Lagos, Delta, Anambra, and Imo States, were arrested.

The syndicate that specialises in abducting young Muslims from Kano and other northern states to the Southern part of the country, renames, converts them to Christianity, and sells them to others for slavery.

The unabated abduction of Muslim minors has been condemned by an Islamic Human Rights group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). The group warned the perpetrators to stop henceforth. The warning was contained in a statement made by the group's Kano State Chapter Chairman, Malam Hassan Sani Indabawa, on Saturday, 20th January, 2024.

"This ugly trend must stop. Everyone has to rise against it and Nigerian Muslims will no longer condone a situation whereby Muslim minors are kidnapped, converted to Christianity and sold out.

"It is also worrisome to note the active role of the Church in siding and abetting the alarming rise in abduction, stealing, kidnapping, selling of young Muslims and thereafter converting them to Christianity and changing their names.

"This is buttressed by the participation of some private orphanages, mainly operated by Christians in a clandestine manner. Most of the discovered victims of this devilish abduction are adopted by these unscrupulous orphanages who end up converting the young Muslims to Christianity, in an apparently well planned and aggressive evangelism.

"Recently, the Gombe State Police Command had in collaboration with the Anambra State Police Command, bursted a kidnapper’s den in an orphanage in Onitsha, Anambra State, where they rescued 12 children while one Nkechi Odulye, the proprietor of the orphanage was arrested by the police.

"These Christian orphanages exploited the non existing policy on running and operating of private orphanages in the entire Muslim dominated northern Nigeria, thus having a field day on stalking and poaching of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC). Whenever exposed, they claimed to be helping the hapless OVC to have a better life by providing them with shelter, food and education. Whereas the bottom line is to bloat the Christian population.

"The case of a private orphanage in Kano is the best illustration of abduction for Christ hullabaloo. Kano State, alone, is yet to recover over 600 missing children from these criminal syndicates.

"The Police and agents of National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) had on 25th December, 2019 raided Du Mercy Orphanage Home at Nomansland, in Sabon Gari area, in Kano and apprehended the founder of the orphanage, one Professor Solomon M. Tarfa, for illegally operating an orphanage and rescued 27 children. The Orphanage has procured and adopted over 120 babies since its inception in 1996.

"One Dr Chudi Christopher Nwoye of Assumpta Clinic and Maternity was alleged to be procuring babies and handing them over to Professor Tarfa and his wife. Assumpta Clinic and Maternity has been operating in Kano, also for 30 years. Only God knows the magnitude of atrocities committed by Dr Nwoye before he fled, escaping police arrest.

"The proprietor of the Orphanage, Professor Tarfa was thereafter arraigned on a three count charge: abduction, kidnapping and forging of government document. He was found to be dishonestly using, as genuine, a certificate of registration which he claimed to have obtained from the Kano State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

"During his trial, Professor Tarfa had on 10th August, 2021, admitted under oath that, 'When I wanted to operate Du Mercy Orphanage I went to CAC and obtained certificate of incorporation but I did not register with any relevant authorities in Kano State.'

"But surprisingly, Professor Tarfa mobilized several international and local Christian groups and associations including CAN, by changing the narrative and claimed to be facing 'religious persecution' from Kano State Government. He and his collaborators declared Sabon Gari area as 'Christian district.'

"Several Christian groups mounted pressure on both the federal and Kano state governments as well as the judiciary. The pressure was for the trial judge to drop all charges and discharge Professor Tarfa.

"The intense pressure mounted by some Christian groups, conveniently ignored the criminal allegations against Professor Tarfa for operating an illegal orphanage for almost 30 years in Kano. The Christian groups that blindly lined behind Professor Tarfa included the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), International Christian Concern (ICC), Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) UK, CSW Nigeria,

US - Nigeria Law Group and the Christian Social Movement, among others.

"However, the presiding Judge remained steadfast and committed to dispensing justice by treating the case on its own merit. Consequently, Professor Tarfa was convicted on 4th March, 2022 and jailed for 2 years in a brilliant judgment that even Professor Tarfa admitted to be 'just and transparent.'

"However, and sadly, the Court of Appeal, on 27th January, 2023 discharged and acquitted the Professor claiming lack of diligent prosecution. The respondent, for inexplicable reasons, failed to file their respondent's brief, thus effectively killing a good case.

The Kano State Ministry of Justice should pay more attention to its personnel by ensuring that such cases are prosecuted diligently.

"The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) now asks, why did the Christian world rally behind Professor Tarfa if he was not working for the church?

"Most worrisome is the active collaboration of these illegal orphanages with Clinics like Assumpta, where new born babies were procured and handed over to Professor Tarfa and his wife. The Kano State Government and indeed other northern state governments and every stakeholder must be worried about this development.

"We urge Kano State Government and other state governments, as a matter of urgency, to come up with policy on setting up of private orphanages. With the proliferation of private orphanages, the authorities should produce operational guidelines for streamlining the activities of such centers.

"The Nigeria Police, NAPTIP, Hisbah, Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and Ministry of Women Affairs must keep vigilance on the activities of private orphanages and clinics, such as Du Mercy Orphanage and Assumpta Clinic and Maternity to ensure they comply with the rules and guidelines for operating such orphanages and health care facilities.

"We similarly call on wealthy Muslims, Islamic organizations and northern state governments, especially Kano State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf, to show more concern and empathy in increased funding, adoption and rehabilitation of Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in the state.

"MURIC further calls on the press to continue to expose these criminals for what they are, noting that the press has an important role to play while eschewing partisanship and sectionalism.

"Lastly, we call on Muslim Lawyers Association of Nigeria (MULAN) and other Islamic organizations to follow-up on all court cases of criminal abduction of Muslim minors to ensure that justice is not only done, but also must be seen to have been done by procuring stiffest punishment for Christian zealots, who abduct Muslim minors for Christ."
