KATSINA 50: MUSLIM LIVES MATTER TOO – MURIC

23rd August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

KATSINA 50: MUSLIM LIVES MATTER TOO – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed dismay over the killing of 50 Muslims during a prayer session inside their mosque in Malunfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The faith-based organization lamented the high death toll and wondered why the West, particularly the United States, is silent now that the victims are Muslims. MURIC reminded the global community that Muslim lives also matter. #MuslimLivesMatterToo

The group’s statement which was issued on Saturday, 23rd August, 2025, was signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

It reads:

“Bandits struck at Malunfashi Local Government Area last week killing 50 Muslims. 30 of the victims were killed inside the mosque while praying while the rest were burnt alive in their homes (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/nwest/815559-katsina-massacre-20-burnt-bodies-discovered-as-death-toll-rises-to-50.html).

“The attacks took place across several communities at Gidan Adamu Mantau, Unguwar Yar Mai Dabo, Makera in Karfi ward, and Burdigau in Yaba ward between Monday night and Tuesday morning 4th and 5th August, 2025.

“We condemn these attacks in the strongest terms. They were gruesome, ferocious, inhuman and barbaric.

“MURIC calls on the security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army to up their game in the northern region where insecurity is most visible. Momentary attacks on innocent civilians can be explained away but not attacks that last the whole night.

“What happened to army outposts? How effective is intelligence gathering among the civilians in those villages? Are we saying there have been no contacts between the security agencies and the villagers before the attacks? If the attacks were ‘reprisals’ as reported, why was there no forward-looking defence strategy?

“We frown at Western countries, particularly the United States, who feverishly ululate at the killing of any single Nigerian Christian but who conveniently go into dozing sessions when the victims are large number of innocent Muslim civilians. This selective activism only amplifies our belief in the absence of justice, equity and fair play in the global ecosystem.”

ISESE DAY: IT IS THEIR RIGHT BUT THEY TOO MUST RESPECT RIGHTS OF OTHERS – MURIC

21st August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

ISESE DAY: IT IS THEIR RIGHT BUT THEY TOO MUST RESPECT RIGHTS OF OTHERS – MURIC

Traditionalists in the South West marked the Isese Day yesterday and they seized the opportunity to ask the Federal Government to declare every 21st and 22nd of August as national holidays.

Surprisingly, support for their demand came from the most unexpected quarter, namely, an Islamic human rights group called the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). But the support came with a conditionality, namely, that traditionalists must also respect the rights of others by putting a stop to the declaration of illegal curfews, restricting the movements of others, violation of the rights of women and the secret killing of human beings for ritual sacrifice.

MURIC revealed its support and attached conditions in a statement issued on Thursday, 21st August, 2025 by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“Traditionalists in Yorubaland marked the Isese Day yesterday, 20th August, 2025. They also used the opportunity to ask the Federal Government to declare every 21st and 22nd of August as national holidays.

“This demand is just, legitimate and constitutional. In so far as the other two religions enjoy the right, traditionalists also deserve it. Therefore, we have no objection to their demand.

“It is only a selfish man who will eat his fill and still stop others from eating. It is also only a fanatical worshipper that will freely worship according to his own faith but will disallow others from worshipping according to their own tastes.

“Islam teaches a philosophy of freedom of worship. The popular phrase ‘Lakun diinukunm wa liya diiin’, i.e. ‘For you is your religion, and for me is my religion’ (Glorious Qur’an 109:6) paraphrases the ideological stand of Islam on freedom of religion.

“We therefore declare loud and clear that we support the demand of followers of traditional religion for their own holidays to be known as Isese Day. Their holiday has nothing to do with our religion. It does not disturb us and it does not make us uncomfortable in any way. It is their own day of happiness. We cannot stand in their way on this because we believe in the philosophy of ‘Live and let live’.

“The classic fable of the ‘dog in the manger’ reminds us of a dog which ate its fill in terms of meat and bones but the same dog sat on a stack of hay and continued barking at a hungry cow thereby preventing it from eating. Dogs do not eat grass, yet this overfed dog will not allow a hungry cow to eat grass.

“This fable provides a perfect personification of the characteristics of those who do not need Shari’ah (because they already have common law) but will not allow the Muslims to practice Shari’ah. In the same vein, they will not allow the Muslims to have Hijrah holiday yet they already have New Year holiday. Neither will they allow Muslims to have a work-free Friday even though their Sunday is always free.

“But we cannot afford a tit for tat. As an Islamic human rights organization with a vision to build a nation that respects Allah-given fundamental human rights of all its citizens regardless of their religion, ethnicity or gender, we are duty bound to support all legitimate demands that are based on fundamental human rights regardless of their sources.

“Our vision of Nigeria is that of a nation where people live together in peace and harmony, a nation in which no one is oppressed, where every citizen enjoys Allah-given fundamental human rights regardless of class, creed or ethnicity.

“We are middle-roaders and socio-intellectual jihadists fighting corruption and extravagance, seeking freedom of worship for all, emancipation for the oppressed, justice for the persecuted, jobs for the jobless, food for the hungry, healing for the sick, clothing apparels for the naked and shelter for the homeless. All these are part of principles of Islamic liberation theology.

“That is why we will not be dogs in the manger like some people wish to be. We will support the demand for Isese Day. But with a proviso. We are attaching conditionalities to our support for the declaration of Isese Day based on the legal principle of 'ex dolo malo non oritur actio', i.e. he who comes to equity must come with clean hands.

“If the adherents of Isese religion (also known as traditionalists) demand the recognition or enforcement of their rights, they must first recognize and respect the rights of others. They must remove all the skeletons in their cupboards. They have come to equity. They must come with clean hands. They cannot eat their cakes and still have it.

“In which case all past infringements and encroachments on Allah-given fundamental human rights of others by the same adherents of Isese must stop. Put more succinctly, there shall be no more illegal curfews, no more unlawful restrictions of people’s movements particularly during Oro festivals, no more infractions on the rights of women, no more public flogging of innocent Nigerians by masquerades, no more killing of humans for ritual sacrifices, etc.

“It is noteworthy that Isese followers in Yorubaland are serial violators of people’s rights. They have always committed all the above crimes during their own festivals whereas Muslims and Christians have never placed restrictions on the general public either while worshiping or celebrating.

“We note with serious concern that some state governments in the South West have already recognized Isese Day by declaring yesterday, Wednesday, 20th August as a holiday. That was rather hasty. We are certain that it was done without consultation and without considering complaints of excesses and blatant impunity lodged by stakeholders. They have forgotten that peace building is a collective affair. The impunity of the Isese group has continued ad infinitum because these state governments have never held the Isese group accountable.

“While there have been several complaints lodged against the excesses of the traditionalists, the governments of the South West as well as the security agents often ignored the complaints (https://theeagleonline.com.ng/no-to-oro-curfew-24-hours-to-salah-muric/; https://dailypost.ng/2019/09/04/islamic-group-blows-hot-oro-cultists-impose-round-clock-curfew-ogun/; https://theeagleonline.com.ng/muric-to-gov-abiodun-stop-illegal-oro-curfew-now-to-avert-bloodshed/; https://www.legit.ng/nigeria/1590153-traditionalistsoro-worshippers-warn-lagosians-stay-indoor-of/).

“Chroniclers’ records are equally replete with internet links on attacks launched by the same Isese adherents on Christians in their churches as well as attacks on Muslims in their mosques (https://www.thecable.ng/one-dead-10-injured-as-traditionalists-clash-with-christians-in-lagos/; https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/04/four-injured-as-traditionalists-attack-worshippers-inside-mosque-2/; https://www.herald.ng/drama-ogun-oro-worshipers/; https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2025/06/15/muric-condemns-masquerade-attack-on-mosque-calls-for-justice/).

“The records are there. Internet does not tell lies. Traditionalists have been a main source of concern on the probability of the outbreak of a major religious crisis in Yorubaland. The above internet links prove it.

“We have shown our readiness to support their demand for Isese Day, the onus is on them to pledge to respect the fundamental human rights of others by stopping all their excesses. We advise the Federal Government not to grant their demand for Isese Day until they provide a written commitment on the above serial infringements. Isese Day: to be or not to be? That is the question. The ball is in Isese’s court.”

CAPTURE OF TERRORISTS: MURIC HAILS NSA, DSS BOSS

18th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

CAPTURE OF TERRORISTS: MURIC HAILS NSA, DSS BOSS

Men of the Department of State Services (DSS) have captured two leaders of Al-Ansaru and Mahmuda terrorist groups which have been operating in Nigeria for some years. Reacting to this development, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has commended the National Security Adviser (NSA) as well as the head of the Department of State Services (DSS) for this feat.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued on Monday, 18th August, 2025 by the Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).

He wrote:

"Terrorism suffered a major blow in recent time. It was revealed on Friday, 15th August, 2025 that the two leaders of Al-Ansaru and Mahmuda terrorist groups, Mahmud Muhammad Usman, the self-styled Amir of Ansari and his comrade in terrorism, Mahmud al-Nigeri.

"The two terrorists have been on the wanted list of Nigeria, the US, UK and UN for years. They had succeeded in evading arrest until they were captured in a sting operation conducted between May and July 2025.
(
https://www.thegazellenews.com/nigeria-dismantles-terror-groups-ansaru-mahmuda-captures-their-leaders/#google_vignette).

"MURIC hails Nigeria's indefatigable National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, for replicating his brilliant performance and enviable record as head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in his present position.

"The big come-back of the security agencies, their resilience and recent successful onslaughts against Boko Haram, bandits, kidnappers and other criminals can be traced to his methodical cum microscopic re-engineering of Nigeria's security paraphernalia.

"Equally worthy of encomiums for this feat is the head of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi. His tactics since resuming office in August 2024 have been that of silent but effective containment of security threats which is symptomatic of undiluted professionalism.

“Yet we must not forget those who face the real danger. They are the DSS operatives in the field. They are the lurking shadows at the street corners, those who spend days sleeping inside vehicles, those who lose their identities in crowds, those who are to see but must not be seen. We salute them. We appreciate their sacrifices for our great country, Nigeria. They are the real heroes.

"MURIC urges the Federal Government (FG) to do more for the security agencies in terms of equipment and welfare. No amount spent on security is wasted because every other sector depends on the safety of the ecosystem to function.

"For the upteenth time, we as an Islamic human rights organization decry terrorism and all forms of violence. True to our avowed motto which is ‘Dialogue, No Violence’, we hold that violence is a square peg while vengeance and justice are round holes. They do not fit. We reject all groups that are promoting, rationalizing or pursuing violence. What you seek is never what you get.

"We assert clearly, unequivocally and emphatically that terrorists do not represent Muslims, rather they are a clog in the wheel of the progress of Islamdom. They smear the good name of Islam and they deface the whole gamut of Islamic architecture."

NIGERIA SHOULD NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ISRAEL – MURIC

13th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:
NIGERIA SHOULD NOT DO BUSINESS WITH ISRAEL – MURIC

A faith-based civil society organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed to the Federal Government, states and parastatals to resist the temptation of doing business with Israel. The group frowned upon a deal between Nigeria and Israel’s foreign ministries involving forty startups in the country. MURIC argued that any business deal with Israel is a romance with a terrorist state.

In a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday, 13th August, 2025, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC’s Founder and Executive Director, described the startups as vehicles of deception from a rogue genocidal state.

The full statement reads:

“Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Sharren Haskel-Harpaz, Monday announced her country’s startup initiative in Abuja. Sharren, who spoke in the presence of officials of the Nigerian foreign ministry said the initiative will involve forty startups (https://punchng.com/israel-backed-tech-hub-to-support-40-new-startups-in-nigeria/?utm_source=auto-read-also&utm_medium=web).

“MURIC hereby expresses strong reservations about this deal. It suffers from acute desertification of conscience. It is morally wrong for Nigeria to sign any business deal with Israel at a time the Zionist state is at loggerheads with the rest of the world. Israel has defied the United Nations. The genocidal state mocks all 193 member countries of the UN.

“As we speak, Israel has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians between 7th October and today. Christians have been killed inside churches, children and women form majority of Israel’s victims. Landlocked Palestine is being starved to death. The fundamental human rights violations of Israel are astounding.

“Doing business with Israel at this moment is akin to dancing on the graves of those innocent women and children massacred by a belligerent, war-mongering and recalcitrant state. Every single sheqel from the Bank of Israel is blood money.

“MURIC appeals to the Federal Government, states and parastatals to resist the temptation of doing business with Israel. We charge Nigerians to shun Israel’s money and its genocide-infested businesses. Any business deal with Israel is a romance with a terrorist state.”

STRANDED NIGERIANS IN CAR: MURIC COMMENDS NIDCOM

12th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:
STRANDED NIGERIANS IN CAR: MURIC COMMENDS NIDCOM

A human rights group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has commended the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) for rescuing Nigerians stranded in Central Africa Republic (CAR) and bringing them to the safe premises of the Nigerian Embassy in that country. The group appealed to stakeholders within and outside Nigeria to assist NIDCOM in bringing the miners to Nigeria.

MURIC gave the commendation in a message signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Tuesday, 12th August, 2025.

The message reads:

“It will be recalled that a viral video surfaced a few days ago showing some miners from Nigeria calling for help. They had allegedly been tricked into travelling to Central Africa Republic (CAR) to work at the mines and they ended up being stranded.

“A Chinese national and a Nigerian agent reportedly hired them for work in that country and they abandoned them there without paying their renumeration for 11 months. Traumatised, distressed and debilitated, they had called for help.

“The stranded Nigerians were swiftly rescued through the intervention of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) under the able and dynamic leadership of Abike Dabiri, its chairman and Chief Executive Officer (https://punchng.com/stranded-nigerian-miners-in-car-arrive-embassy-nidcom/).

“MURIC extols the head of NIDCOM for the good leadership trait exhibited by her. In the same vein, we laud the staff of the Nigerian embassy in Bangui, CAR as well as the country’s security agencies for locating the miners and escorting them to the embassy. In particular, the embassy staff deserve encomiums for their hospitality.

“But it is not over until it is over. We appeal to both local and international stakeholders to assist NIDCOM in order to finally bring the miners to Nigeria. The Federal Government of Nigeria is capable of mobilizing Nigerian airlines, philanthropists, business moguls and international stakeholders like the International Organisation For Migration (IOM) to assist in making this a fait accompli.

“MURIC calls for the immediate location, arrest and prosecution of the agent who lured them into the job scam. Even the Chinese collaborator should be traced by Interpol and made to face the music. No Nigerian deserves to go through this type of hardship.”

MURIC HAILS NAFISAH, BACKS CALLS FOR HER CELEBRATION

6th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:
MURIC HAILS NAFISAH, BACKS CALLS FOR HER CELEBRATION

Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, a 17-year-old student from Yobe State, Nigeria, recently emerged as the world’s best in English language skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London.

Meanwhile the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has backed calls for Nafisa to be celebrated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. MURIC argued that though it is good to encourage our sportsmen and women, it is better to prioritise education by giving bigger rewards to those who excel in that field.

The group also urged Northern governors to showcase Nafisa as a way of encouraging out of school children to embrace Western education.

The faith-based voluntary organization made the call in a press release issued by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Wednesday, 6th August, 2025.

The release reads:

“Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, a 17-year-old student from Yobe State, Nigeria, recently emerged as the world’s best in English language skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London, United Kingdom.

“To perform this great feat, she beat 20,000 students from 69 countries including those from Great Britain, owners of the language themselves (https://www.intelregion.com/news/17-year-old-nigerian-student-beats-69-countries-to-win-english-contest).

“This is definitely no mean feat. It is humongous, cerebral and arcane. It is record-breaking. Nigerians should be proud of their own. Besides, the Federal Government should recognize Nafisa as a heroine and a genius primus inter pareil.

“We hereby call upon President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to honour Nafisa as he has been honouring those to whom honour is due. The Super Falcons were showered with national honours, 100,000 dollars to each of the 24 players and a 3-bedroom apartment per participant (https://punchng.com/tinubu-honours-triumphant-super-falcons-with-national-honours-100000-cash-each/).

“A week later, Nigeria’s D’Tigress were given similar treatment by President Tinubu (https://www.arise.tv/tinubu-awards-dtigress-players-100000-each-housing-gift-national-honour/).

“While we appreciate President Tinubu for recognizing these young sports heroines, we strongly believe it was high time he invited Nafisa for excelling in academics. No young Nigerian from the Yahoo Yahoo or cult clubs could have beaten those 20,000 students from 69 countries in an academic competition!

“It is good to encourage our sportsmen and women, but it is better to prioritise education by giving bigger rewards to those who excel in that field. Only thus can indolence be shunned by Nigerian youths. On the other hand, it is better not to reward at all than to idolise excellence in sports but demonise or totally ignore titanic greatness in academics.

“Nigerians were miffed when they saw the extremely poor performance of our students in the 2025 West African Examination Council (WAEC) results which were released two days ago. The results revealed a sharp decline in performance as only 38.32 per cent obtained credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.  (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/811858-updated-wassce-2025-waec-releases-results-records-sharp-decline-in-performance.html).

“A nation grappling with falling education standards, indolence among the youths, cultism, general moral bankruptcy, a nation where the youth have adopted ‘school is scam’ as their mantra while the citizenry embrace the ‘japa’ syndrome because they have the wrong impression that ‘Nigeria is finished’ should jump at the opportunity of showcasing a young brilliant performer like Nafisa.

“Nafisa deserves everything the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress received and even more. This is the time to know what our leaders really cherish. We have had governors in this country who splashed millions of naira and free houses on BB Naija winners whose moral compass is highly questionable. The question is where are our values? Where are our norms. Who did this to Nigeria?

“President Tinubu has a golden opportunity to reshape the destiny of our young ones as well as that of coming generations. A realistic act of recognition for Nafisa’s uncommon academic performance will realign the mentality of Nigerian youths to factory setting.

“MURIC also calls on the governor of Yobe, Mai Mala Buni, to hit while the iron is hot. We hereby nominate Nafisa as Yobe State Education Ambassador. She deserves the pomp and pageantry. Let her ride in open jeep around the capital to show Yobe children that it pays to be educated.

“According to statistics, about 80% of Nigeria's out-of-school children are located in the northern region. This percentage translates to roughly 20 million children not attending school in Nigeria (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/07/80-of-out-of-school-children-are-from-northern-nigeria-nef-chair/).

“Nothing stops state governors in the region from inviting Nafisa and making her speak in town hall meetings in Northern capitals. This will be an effective way of turning unwilling out of school children into school enthusiasts. Afterall, Nafisa’s victory has destroyed some myths and shattered stereotypes about certain ‘uneducated’ parts of Nigeria.”

INITIATE BILL ON FEDERAL SHARI’AH COURTS – MURIC TELLS NASS

4th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:
INITIATE BILL ON FEDERAL SHARI’AH COURTS – MURIC TELLS NASS

After asking the Federal Government (FG) to intervene directly in the lopsidedness in the judiciary, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has beamed its interrogation on the National Assembly (NASS). The group has asked the latter to initiate a bill on the creation of federal Shari’ah courts in all states, particularly in Southern Nigeria.

MURIC’s latest request was made in a statement released to newsmen on Monday, 4th August, 2025. The statement was signed by the group’s executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“It will be recalled that our organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), last week, Friday, 1st August, 2025 appealed to the Federal Government of Nigeria (FG) to fully integrate Shari’ah courts into the country’s judicial system by directly establishing Federal Shari’ah courts in all states the same way it established Christian common law courts all over the country (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/811386-muric-asks-fg-to-establish-shariah-courts-in-36-states-abuja.html; https://leadership.ng/integrate-sharia-courts-into-nigerias-judicial-system-muric-tells-fg/).

“As a corollary to this appeal and considering the fact that even FG may need an enabling constitutional instrument to take this noble step, we are beaming our interrogation light on the National Assembly (NASS) to do the needful.

“We hereby call the attention of both houses of the Nigerian parliament, Senate and the House of Representatives, to the glaring lopsidedness cum lacuna in the Nigerian judicial system which has denied Muslims in Southern Nigeria their Allah-given fundamental human rights in terms of free access to courts of their own choice (i.e. Shari’ah courts).

“Inclusivity is sine qua non in every democratic setting but Muslims in Southern Nigeria are deprived of this in present day Nigerian judicial system. It is such situations that breed dissatisfaction among the populace thereby making peace, stability and social harmony evasive unless it is addressed.

“It is well known that the Nigerian legal system stands on a tripod of common law, customary law and Islamic law (Shari’ah). For justice to experience a balance, it is expected that each component of the tripartite systems should be equally treated and applied in all parts of the country.

“But the reverse is the case as only two of them (common law and customary law) enjoy national spread while Shari’ah is restricted to the North. In particular, common law which is essentially and undeniably Christian law enjoys special grace with the establishment of magistrate courts and high courts by state governments as well as federal high courts, federal courts of appeal and the Supreme Court by the Federal Government.

“Customary courts come next as they are established all over the country by all state governments. They also enjoy the luxury of customary courts of appeal. These courts apply traditional rules in their areas of jurisdiction thereby representing traditional religion.

“Regrettably, however, Shari’ah suffers desertification of official attention in all the Southern states of Nigeria because it is only allowed in the Northern states. This should not be so. It is quite understandable if state governments in the South discriminate against Shari’ah since the governors are all Christians.

“But what about FG that should play the role of father of all? That was why we called on FG last week to act in loco parentis by establishing Federal Shari’ah Courts the same way it established Christian common law courts throughout Nigeria, including the predominantly Muslim core North.

A fortiori, we saw the rationale for us to further take our case to the Nigerian parliament, Senate and the House of Representatives since the executive may still need the intervention of the legislature in a true setting of separation of powers.

“Therefore, we strongly appeal to the NASS to initiate a bill to establish Federal Shariah Courts in all states of the federation. Our appeal is based on the law principle of ubi jus ibi remedium (where there is a right, there is a remedy).

“If, indeed, Shariah is the fundamental human right of Nigerian Muslims (and it is) as enshrined in Sections 275, 276 and 277 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, ubi jus ibi remedium necessitates that a remedy be found by the NASS for the enforcement of this right.

“The constitution says Muslims have the right to operate Shari’ah. There is no argument about that anymore. But since the state governments are reluctant, the National Assembly must take responsibility for enacting a bill that will give FG an enabling instrument to establish Shari’ah courts in the states the same way it has established Christian common law courts all over the federation.

“Introducing this bill or amending the constitution to reflect it will give the executive arm of government the constitutional instrument for establishing Federal Shariah Courts after signing it into law. The ball is therefore in the court of the NASS for now.

“In addition, we appeal to the NASS to see this interrogation as an addendum to the memorandum submitted to the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment in Lagos on Friday, 4th July, 2025 which was replicated two weeks later when a copy was presented to the Committee of the House of Representatives on Constitutional Amendment also in Lagos on Saturday, 19th July, 2025.”
