CAVEAT EMPTOR: MURIC WARNS MILITARY AGAINST COUP

18th January 2016,
PRESS RELEASE:
CAVEAT EMPTOR: MURIC WARNS MILITARY AGAINST COUP

Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State yesterday cautioned President Muhammadu Buhari on the investigation ordered into the involvement of immediate past military chiefs in scams in the purchase of arms. Fayose euphemistically referred to the likelihood of the military resisting such investigation by toppling Buhari’s government.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) finds Fayose’s warning unnecessary, distasteful and alarming It is short in sincerity but long in hypocrisy. It is also provocative. It falls within the rank of hate speech and incitement.

There is no gainsaying the fact that there has been no love lost between Governor Ayodele Fayose and President Buhari. The governor has never been known to wish the president well. Is this not the same governor who placed a full page death-wish advertisement in the newspaper before the presidential elections? This same governor has become known for his blind and unobjective criticism of Buhari’s policies since the inception of this administration. So who is he trying to scare?

It is also an open secret that Fayose is the unofficial spokesperson of Nigeria’s executive thieves. Nigerians should check the records. Why was Fayose impeached as governor during his first tenure? The motive for his second coming is not unknown: to finish the unfinished ‘business’.

Fayose’s opposition to the current war against corruption should therefore not surprise anyone. His allergy for probity and accountability led him to insist that he would not embrace the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy. We shall know them by their fruits. Just yesterday, Sokoto State was able to discover a N1.5 billion excess through the TSA. This alone proves that TSA is in our best interest. So who is Fayose deceiving? What purpose does his grandstanding serve?

MURIC advises the rank and file of the Nigerian Army to ignore Fayose’s euphemism. The army should not allow itself to be incited to mutiny by a man who is still licking the wounds of defeat, a man who had built castles in the air believing that his rigging abracadabra would save his principal, a man facing damning indictment for election rigging.

If there is any governor the inmates of Kirikiri are waiting for to join them today, it is Ayodele Fayose. Here is a frustrated man looking for ways of sinking the whole ship.

We remind the Nigerian Army that military rule has become an anachronism. Any involvement of the military in politics is a misadventure. Nigerians have not only breathed the air of democracy, they have tasted its delicious juice. They have bitten, chewed and swallowed its fulfilling morsels.

There is no going back. Let no frustrated politician deceive our soldiers. Nigerians have long declared a caveat emptor: military rule must not come back again.

We cherish our gallant soldiers in their professional role. They are the defenders of our territorial integrity. They have put Boko Haram to shame though the war is not completely over yet. They are our heroes so long as they remain in their professions without venturing into politics. They must remain vigilant as new roles continue to emerge when unscrupulous elements become cogs in the wheel of peace, law and order.

We warn that only thieves and corrupt elements in the military will contemplate mutiny at a time when the Nigerian people, the academic, civil society, and the professionals have declared their unalloyed support for the war against corruption. Discipline is the hallmark of the military and the height of military discipline is the readiness to submit to constituted authority. We therefore remind Nigerian soldiers of the need to be ready to submit to civil authorities who are currently in power. Failure to do so is rebellion and every Nigerian soldier knows the implication of this.

On a final note, we assert clearly, unambiguously and unequivocally that the current war against corruption is neither partisan nor clannish. It is only logical that a probe of past misdeeds can only involve those who supervised the misdeeds. Those complaining of victimization and vendetta are merely shedding crocodile tears. The war against corruption must continue unabated. Aluta Continua. No Retreat, No Surrender.

MURIC COMMENDS TAMBUWAL FOR PRIORITISING EDUCATION

16th January 2016,
PRESS RELEASE:
MURIC COMMENDS TAMBUWAL FOR PRIORITISING  EDUCATION

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State recently presented a budget estimate of N174.35 billion for the 2016 fiscal year with education getting 29 percent.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) lauds this move. It is not only timely but consistent with the state government’s declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector. It is also a fulfillment of the governor’s campaign promise to place emphasis on education. By allocating this huge chunk of the state’s resources to education, the governor has kickstarted revolution in the education sector in Sokoto State.

Governor Tambuwal’s allocation of 29% of the state’s budget to education surpasses the 26% recommended by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). This is highly commendable because Nigerian governments both at federal and state levels have never been known to comply with UNESCO’s recommendation.

Tambuwal had earlier given a directive that the state government should pay for all candidates who registered for the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) examinations for the year 2016 regardless of their states of origin.

This is another proof of the governor’s commitment to emancipating Sokoto State from the shackles of ignorance. But the fact that his education policy does not discriminate against non-indigenes of the state places him above clannishness and ranks him among true statesmen of our dear nation.

We regard Governor Tambuwal’s bold step as a long shot in the arm in the fight against insurgency which has been blamed on widespread ignorance, unemployment and poverty at the grassroots level. Had former governors in the North paid proper attention to educating the youth, the Boko Haram phenomenon which has claimed more than 150,000 lives, produced about 1,000,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and almost completely destroyed the economy of the region would not have arisen at all. This, indeed, is the crux of Governor Tambuwal’s intervention.

MURIC invites other state governors to emulate Tambuwal’s bold initiative. Nigeria needs revolution in the education sector to get out of the current economic conundrum. The only way to achieve technological breakthrough is by investing heavily in education.

We call on Nigerian leaders to fear Allah. Nigeria’s scarce resources must be used to achieve maximum advantage. By commanding Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to “Read in the Name of your Lord Who Created” (Qur’an 96:1-5) Islam has identified education as the first priority in the pursuit of human welfare. It therefore becomes a divine commandment for those in positions of authority to ensure that Nigerian youths are given qualitative education.

The command given to the Prophet to seek education transcends his personality. It flows down to all homo sapiens. Education is therefore an Allah-given fundamental human right and a divinely given destiny. We charge Nigerian leaders to create an enabling environment for Nigerian youths to fulfill their destiny of knowledge, skill and empowerment all of which lead to prosperity. Nigerians have no business wallowing in ignorance, poverty and squalor.

Also by affirming that those who are educated cannot be compared to the ignorant ones (Qur’an 39:9), Allah has made it abundantly clear that education is the determining factor between the advanced countries and the underdeveloped ones.  Education gave Adam (peace be upon him) an edge over the angels (Qur’an 2:30-35)

The choice is therefore open for our leaders to pick: whether to perpetually enslave Nigerians by paying ordinary lip service to education or to liberate and lift them to the floodgates of knowledge which is capable of leading the country to El Dorado.

Finally, MURIC recommends that those who aspire to public offices, particularly those of president and governor, must provide evidence that their own children are also in Nigerian schools and not pursuing their education abroad. This may further ensure that our leaders pay adequate attention to education. It will also distance Nigeria from a glorified Animal Farm community.

MURIC COMMENDS OONI FOR ATTENDING MODAKEKE DAY

11th January 2016,
PRESS RELEASE:
MURIC COMMENDS OONI FOR ATTENDING MODAKEKE DAY

The new Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II, on Saturday 26th December, 2015 attended this year’s Modakeke Day celebrations.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) lauds the new Ooni for taking this giant step towards peace and reconciliation. By brushing aside all protocols and sidestepping bureaucratic redtape, the Ooni’s deft move has achieved in one day what successive governments have failed to achieve in decades despite parading massive official paraphernalia. This includes the Chief Bode George Committee which was set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo. It is a diplomatic masterstroke.

Looked at from another angle, the Ooni’s attendance at Akoraiye Day in Modakeke reveals another quality in Oba Ogunwusi which is rare among traditional rulers. It is humility nulli secundus for a first class traditional ruler of the caliber of the Ooni of Ife, to ignore past hostilities and attend the ceremony of not just a perceived foe but that of a people with whom Ile-Ife had engaged in internecine war that claimed the lives of thousands.

Ooni’s declaration yesterday during the visit of the Afenifere Renewal Group in which he advocated peaceful coexistence and a return to Yoruba cultural values is equally didactic. He has repeatedly assured that his reign will be dedicated to cultural renaissance and the development of Yorubaland.

In this connection, we bring the plight of university lecturers, teachers and students of Yoruba language to the attention of Kabiyesi, the Ooni of Ife. The cultural renaissance may remain a dream if the education sector continues its current hostile posture to Yoruba as a subject studied in schools.

Yoruba language as a subject has been relegated to the background in the curriculum. It is so bad that some universities in Yorubaland now reject credit in Yoruba as one of the five subjects acceptable for admission. Worse still, some universities in Yorubaland are threatening to remove Yoruba as one of their degree courses.

We urge the royal father to use his good office and influence as the chairman of Osun State Council of Obas to mobilize all traditional rulers in the state and subsequently the entire Yorubaland towards ensuring that Yoruba language recovers its pride of place in our curriculum.

MURIC appeals to the people of Ifeland to see the trait of leadership by example in the Ooni’s action. We call on all the sons and daughters of Ife to rally round the young but divinely endowed monarch so that the cradle of Yorubaland can fulfill its destiny. The first step towards achieving this is to eschew violence in all its ramifications. Crisis of all kinds, political, cultural or religious must be avoided. It is unity that can make Ife truly great.

Since it takes two to tango, we call on the Ogunsua of Modakeke, Oba Francis Adedoyin, to reciprocate the Ooni’s good gesture. The geographical proximity of the two towns should be exploited for better advantage.

To this end, we warmly welcome the Ooni’s philanthropic offer of jobs to 20,000 widows of the fratricidal war from both sides. This will help in healing wounds and facilitate full reconciliation.  The economic empowerment of widows from both sides clearly portrays the new monarch, Ojaja II, not only as a man of peace but also as a royal father with a heart of gold.

Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi has stooped to conquer. He has won a life-long battle without firing a single shot. This is a mark of greatness and a symbol of good leadership.

66 SOLDIERS: MURIC LAUNCHES ONLINE PETITION FOR PRESIDENTIAL PARDON

5th January 2016,
PRESS RELEASE:
66 CONVICTED SOLDIERS: MURIC LAUNCHES ONLINE PETITION FOR PRESIDENTIAL PARDON

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) today, Tuesday 5th January, 2016 launched an online campaign seeking presidential pardon for the 66 soldiers who bagged ten years jail each after their death sentences had been commuted. The online petition which was launched at ipetition reads:

PARDON THE 66 SOLDIERS

“William Shakespeare was right when he said, ‘"Some rise by sin and some by virtue fall. Some run from brakes of vice and answer none while some are convicted for a fault alone".

“66 Nigerian soldiers who had earlier been sentenced to death in December 2014 had their sentences commuted to ten years imprisonment each in December 2015 by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai. We thank the COAS for showing mercy on them.
“12 among the 66 soldiers committed a separate offence. They were accused of making an attempt on the life of their commander. The remaining 54 were those who asked to be properly armed before advancing on the enemy.

“Nigerians will recall that Nigerian soldiers were fleeing from Boko Haram insurgents due to lack of adequate weaponry. It was after President Muhammadu Buhari became president that he took steps to provide the necessary equipment for the soldiers. The pendulum has since swung as Nigeria's gallant soldiers have liberated territories hitherto occupied by the terrorists.

“The ongoing probe into allegations of diversion of huge funds meant for the purchase of arms for the Nigerian military has opened the eyes of Nigerians. They have seen how many corrupt politicians pocketed the funds thereby causing the death of thousands of civilians and soldiers, the abduction of over 200 Chibok girls and the destruction of the homes and properties of thousands who have now been turned into internally displaced persons (IDPs) in their own country.

“The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), now convinced that there was actually an acute shortage of weaponry among soldiers fighting the insurgents and that some callous and greedy politicians were responsible for the shortage, concluded that meting out any punishment to the convicted soldiers is a miscarriage of justice.

“Based on this conclusion, MURIC hereby appeals to the good people of Nigeria to sign a petition requesting President Muhammadu Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces to compassionately exercise the prerogative of mercy by granting presidential pardon to the aforementioned soldiers.

“Greatest Nigerian People! We appeal to all men of conscience to raise their voices in support of these young and gallant soldiers who are being punished for exposing corruption and for being whistleblowers against those who pocket blood money. Please send this appeal to all your contacts. It is a humanitarian service. Only noble minds fight for the innocent. Remember the words of Uthman Dan Fodio, "Conscience is a wound, only the truth can heal it."

The petition whose target is 5,000 signatures garnered 42 signatures and 31 comments within three hours of its emergence. We appeal to civil society, social media activists and all men of conscience to go online and sign this petition in order to give these young soldiers a new lease of life.

We must stop the age-old Nigerian practice of sacrificing excellence on the altar of mediocrity. It is even worse this time as Nigeria is about to sacrifice heroes on the altar of rogues. If we cannot stem the tears of the unlucky mothers of the Chibok girls which are still flowing freely, we have a chance to stop the tears of the mothers of the 66 soldiers from turning to blood. We call on Nigerians to stand up to be counted on the side of justice.
