MURIC CONDEMNS ZAMFARA KILLINGS, CONDOLES GOV MUTAWALLE

10th January, 2022

PRESS RELEASE :

MURIC CONDEMNS ZAMFARA KILLINGS, CONDOLES GOV MUTAWALLE

About fifty eight (58) people were reported killed in an attack by terrorists in Zamfara State on Tuesday, 4th January, 2022. Meanwhile an Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has sent a message of condolence to the state governor, Bello Muhammad Mutawalle.

In the condolence message made available to journalists on Monday, 10th January, 2022, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC’s director, described the killings as disheartening, horrific and barbaric.

The message reads:

“About fifty eight (58) people were reported killed in a three-day reprisal attacks by terrorists in Zamfara State which began on Tuesday, 4th January, 2022 and lasted till Thursday. 6th January 2022. About 300 terrorists on motor-cycles stormed eight villages in Anka Local Government area of the state on Tuesday and another ten villages in Bukkuyum district on Wednesday and Thursday. They killed at random.

“We strongly condemn these killings. They are cowardly, disheartening, horrific and barbaric. We call on the security agencies to leave no stone unturned in apprehending the perpetrators. They must be held accountable. People who turn children, wives and husbands into orphans, widows and widowers respectively overnight are heartless beasts. They deserve no mercy.

“The killings are believed to be reprisal attacks carried out in revenge for terrorists killed during air raids by the Nigerian military fighter jets last week. The air raids reportedly killed some leaders of the terrorist groups as well as tens of their foot soldiers.

“This killing of unarmed civilians should not discourage the military. It merely shows that the bandits are feeling the pressure. We call for more pounding from the air. Terrorists must have no place to hide. They must be hounded from pillar to post until they all surrender or they are totally eliminated. Nigeria will not be defeated by sadistic renegades, rebellious subjects and enemies of peace.

“MURIC commiserates with the governor of Zamfara State, Bello Muhammad Mutawalle, over the horrific killings. We also condole with members of the state executive, the traditional rulers and the good people of the state. Our hearts bleed for the bereaved families. May Allah have mercy on the direct victims and give their families the fortitude to bear the losses.”

DECLARE 1ST MUHARRAM HOLIDAY TO JUSTIFY 1ST JANUARY – MURIC

7th January, 2022

PRESS RELEASE :

DECLARE 1ST MUHARRAM HIJRAH HOLIDAY TO JUSTIFY 1ST JANUARY GREGORIAN HOLIDAY – MURIC

A faith-based human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has demanded the declaration of the first day of the Islamic calendar (1st Muharram) as Hijrah holiday to justify the 1st January Gregorian holiday that is declared annually by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FG).

The group insists that 1st January holiday is a Christian colonial creation designed to dignify and rubber-cushion the pomp and pageantry of Christmas. It therefore argues that only the recognition of the first day of the Islamic new year can balance the equilibrium and ensure parity, justice and fairplay.

MURIC’s demand was made on Friday, 7th January, 2022 by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

MURIC said :

“As usual, the Federal Government (FG) declared 1st January, 2022, a public holiday in recognition of the first day of the Christian Gregorian calendar. But because the day fell on a Saturday, FG created an alternative by declaring the following Monday a public holiday.

“This was an aberration and a gross injustice because Nigerian Muslims have been demanding the declaration of the first day of the Islamic calendar as a holiday for more than twenty (20) years to no avail. It simply means that FG under President Muhammadu Buhari is also supporting the Christianisation of Nigeria. It considers the first day of the Christian calendar as sacred while the first day of the Islamic calendar is regarded as unimportant.

“MURIC frowns at this lopsided arrangement. It is unfair, unjust and undemocratic. We demand immediate review of FG’s holiday policy. We demand the declaration of the first day of the Islamic calendar as a holiday to justify the 1st January holiday that is declared annually by FG.

“It is important to note that the Christian calendar was established by Pope Gregory XIII (1502 - 1585) while the Islamic calendar was kicked off on 16th July, 622 to mark the historical migration (hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah, where the Muslims faced persecution, to Madinah, where they found religious freedom.

“The decree which declared Anno Hijrae was promulgated in 639 C.E. during the reign of Umar bin Khattab, the second orthodox khalifah (622 – 644). The Islamic calendar also finds divine expression in the Glorious Qur’an 9:36; 2:189; 10:5 and 17:12. Unlike the Gregorian calendar, therefore, the Islamic hijrah calendar is not a product of human machination and manipulation.

“Being a product of a people hitherto repressed by the pagans of Makkah, the Islamic calendar is also an instrument of freedom and liberation. Seen from this angle, all past and present efforts made by Nigerian Muslims for the actualisation of hijrah holiday is therefore part of the struggle for the emancipation of Nigerian Muslims from the clutches of Christian neo-imperialism, oppression and persecution.

“1st January holiday is a Christian colonial creation designed to dignify and rubber-cushion the pomp and pageantry of Christmas. In the interest of peace, FG should review this Christian colonial heritage. Nigeria became independent 62 years ago for crying out loud. 62 years is long enough to right wrongs perpetrated by the British slave masters.

“Unfortunately, Muslims are still being treated like slaves and third class citizens by the government of Nigeria. It is too glaring to be denied. FG continues to impose an inferiority complex on Nigerian Muslims. We reject this imbalance. We will not suffer in silence. We will raise our voices on Nigerian streets and cities. We will cry out in the villages, in the creeks and in the forests. The valleys, hills and mountains will echo our voices. We will rather be free men in our graves than live like puppets and slaves.

“Democracy is fraudulent without equal participation, equal rights and justice. We demand parity now and only the recognition of the first day of the Islamic new year can balance the equilibrium and ensure parity, justice and fairplay. Holidays are part of the dividends of democracy. However, the dividends must not be dished out in a selective manner.

“What explanation does FG have for giving Christians holiday on the first day of their calendar while Muslims are denied same? What right has FG to allow one faith to enjoy holiday on the first day of its calendar while the other creed is forced to go to work on its own first day? It is modern day slavery, no more, no less.

“To strike a balance, we demand the declaration of 1st Muharram as a holiday for the Muslim Hijrah calendar. In the alternative or if government thinks this demand is unreasonable, FG should stop declaring 1st January as a holiday. That is when we will know who has been benefitting from it and who has been losing and hurting.

“The fact that many state governments in Nigeria have been recognising 1st Muharram (Hijrah holiday) and declaring the day as a public holiday underpins its relevance, significance and the correctness of the hypothesis of its proponents. Many core Northern states declare 1st Muharram as holiday every year. So what stops FG from doing same at federal level?

“It is noteworthy that the current Minister of the Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, a Muslim, declared Hijrah holiday in Osun State when he was governor. The late Governor Isiaka Ajimobi who was equally a Muslim, also declared hijrah holiday in Oyo State.

“But his successor, Seyi Makinde who is a Christian, refused to follow suit in his first two years in office until Muslims in the state forced him to do so in his third year (2021). There is no gainsaying the fact that Makinde will be gambling with his second term if he fails to declare the hijrah holiday this year (2022).

“Our message to President Muhammadu Buhari is this: For six years MURIC consistently reminded you about the need to give Nigerian Muslims the 1st Muharram Hijrah holiday. But you ignored it. Nigerian Muslims would have engraved your name in letters of gold if you had done so. Your tenure remains just one year and five months. You have just one more chance to right the wrong done by the Christian colonial masters against Nigerian Muslims on the issue of 1st Muharram hijrah holiday before you hand over power in 2023.

“The next hijrah holiday will fall on 29th July, 2021, ceteris paribus. That will be 1st Muharram, 1444. You can still have your name printed on the sands of time. We know you have the courage. You already have many firsts anyway. It is on record that you declared June 12 a national holiday and heaven did not fall. That was a feat many past presidents feared to touch. You named the National Stadium, Abuja after MKO Abiola. There have been many more.

“This earth planet will not tumble if you declare 29th July, 2022 Hijrah holiday in recognition of the first day of the Islamic calendar. This is the time to ignore noise makers. All the quibbling about you Islamising Nigeria is mere blackmail. It is an attempt to stop you from returning Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslims to them.

“Those behind the allegation of Islamisation are aware of atrocities committed against Nigerian Muslims in the past. The Islamisation propaganda is a ruse and a smokescreen designed as the well known ‘attack is the best form of defence’ strategy used by pathological cheats all over the world. Don’t fall for it. Go ahead, Sai Baba. Balance the equilibrium. Live up to your name as a just and equitable ruler. Justify your new appellation as the Father of Modern Nigeria (FMN). Give us Hijrah holiday.”

AREGBESOLA-OYETOLA FEUD : MURIC GIVES 7 DAYS

3rd January, 2022

PRESS RELEASE :

AREGBESOLA-OYETOLA FEUD : MURIC GIVES 7 DAYS

As the rift between the Minister of Internal Affairs, Rauf Aregbesola and the Governor of Osun State, Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola deepens, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has waded into the conflict. The human rights group has given the duo seven days within which they must settle their misunderstanding if indeed they are true Muslims who can settle any score for the sake of Allah.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the group’s director and founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola on Monday, 3rd January, 2022.

MURIC said:

“The rift between the Minister of Internal Affairs, Rauf Aregbesola and the Governor of Osun State, Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola has been in the public arena for more than two years now. All efforts made by stakeholders, including Muslim leaders, to settle the feud have proved abortive.

“We have decided to wade into the squabble because Muslims in the South West will be the worst hit if the rift is allowed to continue ad infinitum. Already, it has become a major embarrassment to Muslim leaders in the sub-region. Muslim youths are also entertaining fears over the ugly development. Apart from this, MURIC’s office has been inundated with calls for our intervention. MURIC’s staunch belief in dialogue and its commitment to it over the years is also another cassu belli of our intervention.

“To cap the edifice, the Muslim Rights Concern is deeply concerned because Allah gave specific instruction to Muslims regarding this type of development. This instruction is in the Glorious Qur’an 49:10. The verse describes Muslims as ‘brothers’ (innama al-mu’minuun ikhwatun) and commands members of the Ummah to intervene in disputes for the purpose of reconciling two feuding Muslim brothers (faslihuu bayna akhwaykunm).

“We appreciate the intervention of Muslim leaders in this dispute. But it is because those efforts are yet to yield the desired result while the rift has already been blown open that MURIC has opted for this intervention. More often than not, parties in disputes tend to forget that their rancours bring sadness and agony to those who love them in particular and other stakeholders in general.

“The question is what is at stake and we affirm that a lot is at stake because when two elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers. The ongoing face-off is likely to affect the fortunes of both Aregbesola and Oyetola in the coming gubernatorial election in Osun State this year although they may not acknowledge this fact now as both gladiators are still grandstanding.

“It is also likely to ricochet on the rumoured presidential ambition of their principal, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. A divided camp cannot fight on one front. Neither can it speak with one voice. For the past two years, MURIC has been calling for a Yoruba Muslim as the next president of this country and we still stand by this. But as it stands today, this bitter quarrel between the two most prominent Muslim politicians is likely to scuttle our aspiration.

“This is why we cannot continue to fold our arms to watch by the ringside while the two combatants slug it out. We must find a way to de-escalate tension. If the combatants will not listen to Muslim leaders who have allegedly pleaded with them in private, we have a duty as a Muslim rights group to task both of them in public. This is a case that is already known to every Dick and Harry anyway and people are wandering why the Muslims have not been able to douse the tension.

“We hereby call the attention of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Rauf Aregbesola and the Governor of the State of Osun, Isiaka Oyetola, to the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) in which he said, ‘Two Muslims should not engage in a quarrel beyond three days. The one who first extends greetings to the other is the better Muslim.’

“It is our desire to leverage on the above hadith by asking both of them who is the better Muslim? Aregbesola or Oyetola, to be or not to be? That is the question.  Who has deeper Imaan (faith) between the two? Who will listen to the hadith first? Who will take his handset and say ‘Salaam Alaykunm’ to his Muslim brother first and follow it up with a visit? Who will be the first to simmer down? Who will be the first to tell his loyalists to stop the intrigue? Who will show the world that the bond of Islam is stronger than the camaraderie in a political party?

“Both politicians have seven days to act. We have no apology for making this demand of them because Allah will ask all of us what role we played in the lingering fracas, the smouldering scandal and the shameful and embarrassing rigmarole. We want Aregbesola and Oyetola to know that there are conscious Yoruba Muslims in leading Islamic organisations who are monitoring this development and they are waiting to see how they will react to this demand.

“They want to know what Aregbesola or Oyetola consider as their major priority: Islam or politics? As Muslims, are the two politicians aware of the eschatological implications of being involved in politics?

“Are they aware that a Muslim politician must not drop Islam behind while going into politics, business or anything at all? Are they aware that this is the import of the verse ‘Idkhuluu fil silmi kaafatan’ (i.e. enter into Islam wholeheartedly, Glorious Qur’an 2:208)? Are they also aware that politics ends in this world and that Allah will ask them how they played it yaom al-Qiyamah (the Day of Ressurection)?

“While we have no doubt that both politicians are good Muslims who have contributed immensely to the development of their people in the past, we must bring to their attention the hadith of the Prophet (SAW) in which he warned that ‘If two Muslims face each other with their swords, then both of them are dwellers of hell fire’.

“Both Aregbesola and Oyetola deserve al-Jannah because they are Muslims and because they have performed excellently well in office. But they should not endanger their chances in al-Akhirah (the Hereafter) with this bickering, based on the above hadith. We hold the two Muslim politicians in high esteem and we will continue to do so as long as they comport themselves in a manner befitting good Muslim politicians who have the fear of Allah in their hearts. Well, the clock has started ticking. They have seven days to prove the depth of their Imaan as well as their love and concern for the Ummah.”
