STOP VICTIMISING MUSLIM JUDGES: MURIC TELLS OSUN CJ

16th October, 2022

PRESS RELEASE:

STOP VICTIMISING MUSLIM JUDGES: MURIC TELLS OSUN CJ

The Chief Judge of Osun State, Honourable Justice Adepele Ojo, has been accused of victimising Muslim members of the judiciary in the state. The allegation was levelled by an Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).

MURIC’s allegation was contained in a press statement circulated on Sunday, 16th October, 2022 by the director of the human rights organisation, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads :

“The Judiciary and Legal Department of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has for some time noticed an unpleasant trend in the affairs of the Osun State judiciary with respect to the treatment of Muslim judges. In particular, we noticed that the Chief Judge, Honourable Justice Adepele Ojo, has been doing everything possible to undermine Islam and the Muslims in Osun State judiciary.

“This observation is verifiable and we are going to substantiate every point we make here. MURIC does not act on impulse. Neither do we level allegations out of spite.

“Exempli gratia, one of the past chief judges allocated two pieces of land of equal sizes to both Christians and Muslim communities of Osun State judiciary at the High Court, Osogbo. The Christians built a church on their land while the Muslims also built a mosque on their own.

“But the Muslims left a small portion of their land for future need. Recently, the Muslim community wanted to build a small structure on the remaining part of the land allocated to them. They had already started the foundation laying when the Chief Judge, obviously acting on information, rushed to the site and stopped them.

“She allegedly swore not to allow it till she bowed out of the bench. The Muslim community lost some bags of cement and other materials on account of this injustice. The unfinished foundation is still there till tomorrow for any curious observer to see.

“Another example of her victimization of Muslims was her arrangement of the 2022 foreign trip of honourable judges which she deliberately fixed to coincide with the period of this year’s Id al-Adha Salah. It was so arranged that Muslim judges could not fully enjoy the trip.

“Although such foreign trips were meant to enable judges to relax, the 2022 trip of the honourable judges to Thailand was a traumatic experience for the Muslim judges involved. It must be noted here that the Chief Judge could have fixed the trip during the annual court vacation or at any other time. But she, in her own wisdom, decided to fix it at a time the Muslim judges would lose appetite and feel the pain.

“The trip was undertaken from 4th to 15th July, 2022 whereas Salah was 9th July, 2022. It was therefore seen as a sadistic ploy to put Muslim judges in a panicky state of mind thereby defeating the primary objective of making the trip an avenue for relaxation for judges with the attendant optimal performance on their return.

“This arrangement resulted in a tortuous, tumultuous and topsy-turvy foreign trip for Muslims among the judges. A programme designed ab initio for hardworking honourable judges to regain their strength turned into one of extreme stress and unmitigated psychological trauma for the Muslims among them.

“All available evidence point to the fact that the 2022 foreign trip as scheduled by the Chief Judge put Muslim judges at an undeserved disadvantage. When their Christian counterparts spent the whole period of about 12 days from 4th to 15th July, 2022, the Muslim judges were constrained to spend just 7 days from 2nd to 8th of July, 2022 because they had to rush home to celebrate Id al-Adha in Nigeria on 8th of July, 2022 for the Salah which was held the next day (9th July, 2022).

“Non-Muslims may not comprehend where we are coming from. They may not assimilate the import of this most embarrassing situation unless we create a scenario where Christians are made to go on a trip from 21st December to 4th January! This is most likely to create a hullabaloo which will force Christians to return home on 24th December, a day to Christmas!

“There is every raison d’etre to suspect that the Honourable Chief Judge has targeted Muslim judges who went for the trip for victimization. Perhaps we can ask the respected Honourable Chief Judge if she would like to schedule the 2023 foreign trip for judges in the state from 21st December 2022 to 4th January 2023 (which is Christmas period) or from 5th to 16th April, 2023 (which is Easter period)! Afterall, who feels it knows it.

“Again, the Chief Judge may find it difficult to explain the cassu belli for the consistent denial of many qualified Muslim lawyers of appointment to bench vacancies in the state. The Chief Judge may want to explain why the last two high court appointments saw the emergence of only two Muslims out of 10 appointments despite the existence of eminently qualified Muslims who applied.

“When did loyalty to pastors and bishops become the standard yardstick for qualification as judges? This is just a question. No disrespect to the bench is intended. MURIC holds the judiciary in high esteem but we will like to see the judiciary promoting equal right, justice and fair play in all its actions. The judiciary is the last hope of the hoi polloi and the jamaaheer have no hope if the judiciary cannot be fair to themselves.

“In the meantime Muslims in Osun State and by extension Nigeria as a whole are waiting to see the parameter the Chief Judge intends to use in filling the existing vacancies at the high court and magistrate courts. We have no scintilla of doubt that dozens of qualified legal luminaries who are Muslims are waiting on the line. We are waiting to see how they will be sidelined this time.”

APOLOGISE OR MUSLIMS WILL BOYCOTT YOUR BANK: MURIC TELLS POLARIS

14th October, 2022

PRESS RELEASE:

APOLOGISE OR MUSLIMS WILL BOYCOTT YOUR BANK: MURIC TELLS POLARIS

A senior official of Polaris Bank last week instructed Muslim staff not to attend Jumuah service. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organisation, has therefore demanded unreserved apology from the bank management within seven days failing which Muslim customers may start boycotting the bank.

This was revealed in a statement circulated among journalists on Friday, 14th October, 2022 by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“A senior official of Polaris Bank, Damilola Adebara, last week addressed a mail to Muslim staff of the bank in which she instructed them that they should not attend Jumu‘ah service. It is instructive to add that she added a threat ‘any infraction of this directive would be dealt with accordingly’. She did this through an email sent on Tuesday, 11th October, 2022 at exactly 12.10 pm.

“MURIC strongly condemns this strong-arm tactic aimed at Christianising the bank’s policies and de-Islamising Muslim staff of Polaris Bank. It is unethical, unprofessional and intolerant.

“Besides, it is illegal, illegitimate, unlawful and unconstitutional for any employer or his or her agents to impose measures, take actions or introduce policies capable of undermining Allah-given fundamental human rights of any citizen of Nigeria no matter his or her faith or ethnicity.

“Damilola Adebara’s mail is a flagrant contravention of Section 38 (i)&ii) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which says, ‘Every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom (either alone or in community with others, and in public or in private) to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance’

“The leaked mail was greeted with outrage, bewilderment and nausea among Nigerian Muslims. Unfortunately the bank’s response to the concern of Muslims was not good enough. It was mild, vague, escapist and deceitful. Polaris Bank had said, ‘The said staff had acted in ignorance and we have since addressed the issue internally’.

“This is a very poor response. It lacked human face, human sympathy, colour and concern. It did not show that the bank has control over its erring staff. The bank responded as if Damilola Adebara is a sacred cow and an untouchable demigod.

“The bank had already found an excuse for a woman who made millions of Nigerian Muslims lose appetite overnight and sent them to the abyss of psychological trauma through her uncouth behaviour, intolerance and exhibition of tramadolised religiousity.

“We wonder why the bank is now the one telling us that the ‘said staff had acted in ignorance’. What ‘ignorance’? Is Polaris Bank aware that it has indicted itself by blaming it all on ‘ignorance’? Who should take the blame if your employee is an ignoramus? Did you train her at all? What happened to post-employment training and retraining?

“What exactly did the bank management do apart from finding excuse for her? What disciplinary measure has the bank taken? Or is it over just like that?  This is how matters are swept under the carpet in Nigeria. What of the Muslim staff barred from attending Jumu‘ah mosque last week by ‘Her Majesty’, Damilola Adebara, the ‘Alpha’ and ‘Omega’, the one whose word is law in Polaris Bank?

“How does she and the bank assuage the unprovoked assault on their spiritual wellbeing? How does the bank mitigate the fear of Nigerian Muslims that they and their brethren cannot expect fair play, justice and equity in the hands of Polaris Bank?

“All that the bank has told Nigerians is that ‘we have since addressed the issue internally’. How? When? What was done to address the issue? What was done to instil discipline? What was done to ensure that no Muslim staff is so harassed in future? This is no longer a private matter. It is between Polaris Bank and the Nigerian Muslim Community. We demand transparency. Injury to one is injury to all.

“We are fully aware that this has also been happening in other banks and we have started collating reports around the country. We advise banks to review their policies towards their Muslim staff particularly on this sensitive Friday Question.

“Why is it so difficult for any bank to give its Muslim staff just two hours to go to the mosque on Friday when Christian staff have the whole day on Sunday to satisfy their spiritual yearning? Here comes the Friday Question once again. This issue will remain knotty until Friday is officially declared a work-free day. But in the meantime, we must take such measures capable of sending a strong message to Nigerian banks.

“First and foremost, we demand apology from Polaris Bank. Nigerian Muslims deserve that courtesy, that respect. That apology should be tendered within seven days from today, Friday, 14th October, 2022 failing which Muslim customers may start boycotting the bank. Nigerian Muslims deserve dignified treatment as homo sapiens compos mentis.

Secondly, the first offender, Damilola Adebara, must go on a few days’ suspension. There must be consequences for unprofessional behaviour. On her return from suspension, she must withdraw the memo sent to all Muslim staff. She must also send copies of the withdrawal mail to her Christian staff and Polaris Bank management exactly as she copied them the offensive email ab initio.

“Polaris Bank should not try to test our will. Whoever thinks Nigerian Muslims cannot mobilise themselves for unified action nationwide is living in delusion. This is the age of resistance against all forms of religious apartheid targeted at Nigerian Muslims. Without firing a single shot, we are determined to teach our traducers lessons in religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence using peaceful and civil liberty gimmicks.

UNILORIN: MURIC SOLICITS SUPPORT FOR EGBEWOLE

13th October, 2022

PRESS RELEASE:

UNILORIN: MURIC SOLICITS SUPPORT FOR EGBEWOLE

The new Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Professor Wahab Egbewole, resumed office yesterday as the 12th Vice Chancellor of the University. Meanwhile an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has solicited support for the new Vice Chancellor. According to the group, Egberongbe needs the support of both town and gown to take Unilorin to the next level.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, 13th October, 2022 by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“The new Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Professor Wahab Egbewole, resumed office yesterday as the 12th head of the ivory tower.

“It is on record that until recently, Unilorin enjoyed uninterrupted academic calendar and programmes as a result of internal industrial harmony. That period of peaceful development was however interrupted when the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) went on strike since February 2022.

“As Nigerians look forward to the resumption of work next week by members of ASUU throughout the federation, we implore lecturers in Unilorin to give the new Vice Chancellor every necessary support that will make his tenure a period of peace and progress in all facets of life in the citadel of learning.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that the new Vice Chancellor needs the support of both town and gown to take Unilorin to the next level. We therefore appeal to the University Council to actively support the new Vice Chancellor in order to achieve academic, administrative and infrastructural development in the university.

“We also call on students, traditional rulers and opinion leaders in Ilorin in particular and in Kwara State in general to join hands with the new Vice Chancellor for optimal benefits to all.”

SUPPORT RUNSEWE ON BB NAIJA: MURIC TELLS NASS

9th October, 2022

PRESS RELEASE:

SUPPORT RUNSEWE ON BB NAIJA: MURIC TELLS NASS

An Islamic human rights society, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has backed the call made by Ambassador Segun Runsewe to the National Assembly (NASS) to give the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) powers to go after BB Naija for the purpose of stopping nudity.

MURIC’s support for the NCAC’s call was contained in a press release issued on Sunday, 9th October, 2022 by the group’s director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The press release reads:

“The Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC), Ambassador Segun Runsewe, on Tuesday 4th October, 2022 called on the National Assembly (NASS) to give his agency powers to go after BB Naija in order to stop nudity in the reality TV show.)

“The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) supports Runsewe’s call and we see no reason why the NASS will hesitate to give him all necessary backing. Big Brother Naija’s reality TV show is the devil incarnate misleading Nigerian youth.

“MURIC has been consistent in its condemnation of BB Naija. We can recall two separate statements issued on the reality TV show. On 12th July, 2019, we made a statement titled ‘Ban BB Naija Now’ (https://muslimrightsmuric.blogspot.com/2019/07/ban-bb-naija-now-muric.html).

“Again on 8th October 2020, we issued another statement under the caption ‘MURIC Chides Ogun Governor Over BB Naija Gifts’ (https://muslimrightsmuric.blogspot.com/2020/10/muric-chides-ogun-governor-over-bb.html).

“That was when the governor gave a bungalow and N5 million cash to the winner of the reality TV show. We saw the governor’s action as idolising immorality and demonising discipline. We described his action as ‘disappointing, disgusting, misplaced and myopic.’

“We call on the NASS to listen to Ambassador Runsewe. It is the voice of reason. BB Naija is forcibly dragging our youths to a world of nudity, debauchery and shamelessness. BB Naija constitutes a potent threat to every home. It is open rape on our cultures, values and norms. BB Naija is luciferous.

“The NASS will have its name indelibly carved in letters of gold if it hearkens to the plea made by Runsewe. His appeal has revealed the weakness in our legal system. It has revealed that there are no extant laws powerful enough to stop romance and sex on our television channels. The time to give the law the teeth to bite is now.”

PRESS RELEASE: MURIC TO NASS : STOP INDECENT DRESSING NOW

6th October, 2022

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC TO NASS : STOP INDECENT DRESSING NOW

An Islamic human rights society, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed to the National Assemly (NASS) to move against indecent dressing in Nigeria. The organization wants legislators to enact laws that will criminalise indecent dressing.

This was contained in a statement released to newsmen on Thursday 6th October, 2022 by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads :

“In a video which went viral recently, an okada passenger was seen giving one stroke of the cane each to two indecently dressed women on the street. There was nothing the women who received the punishment could have done because the okada was in motion. In fact, one of the two women rolled on the floor, writhing in pain while her traducer yelled at her, ‘Go and dress well! In fact, one of the two women rolled on the floor, writhing in pain .  while her traducer yelled at her, ‘Go and dress well! Idiot, ashewo. Uwaaka!’ .

“While we do not endorse the action of the okada passenger as it is capable of enthroning anarchy, we affirm clearly, unambiguously and unequivocally that this singular action is a wakeup call. It has opened our eyes to the fact that appearing half nude in public has electrifying effect on the opposite sex and that something must be done about it.

“Different methods have been adopted in different Nigerian environments to discourage indecent dressing. For example, the hisbah (Shariah police) is always there in places like Kano and Sokoto to check indecent dressing. In some Igbo communities, market women will surround any woman who dares to come out half naked to the market. There will be shouts of ‘Ashawo come market!’ and the women will open sachets of pure water to spray on her body.

“The most recent and most outstanding example of the rejection of indecent dressing in Iboland is the ban imposed on the use of mini-skirts by school girls in Anambra State by Governor Charles Soludo on Monday, 19th September, 2022 (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/09/anambra-bans-use-of-miniskirts-as-school-uniform-2/).

“Several Nigerian tertiary institutions have also rolled out dressing codes in a bid to outlaw indecent dressing. The Buhari/Idiagbon regime (1983 – 85) had also introduced War Against Indiscipline with indecent dressing among women as a cardinal area of attention. The move succeeded in injecting a strong dose of discipline at the time but enemies of morality truncated the administration and the succeeding regime of Babangida turned back the hands of the clock.

“MURIC rejects the one-sided view on sexual harassment. Most women who dress half nude in public boast of ‘dressing to kill’. But who are the victims of this ‘attempted manslaughter’? It is men. We submit that indecent dressing by women tantamounts to sexual harassment on the part of the descendants of Hawa (Eve).

“Therefore, there should be no preferential treatment for women on the issue of sexual harassment. Women are as guilty as men if not more. Rape is on the increase in society today because moral bankruptcy is at its peak. Women are now anxious to expose provocative parts of their anatomy in public. That is seduction. We are of the opinion that there should be consequences for women who seductively expose sensitive parts of their bodies and the law of the land should be amended to take care of this.

“Already, Section 26 of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act (2015) provides for indecent exposure ‘with intent to cause distress’ but it is hardly ever applied. This is the time for our lawmakers to take a second look at that aspect of the law with a view to strengthening it and effectively criminalising indecent dressing. Both the executive and the judiciary should also support the legislature for enforcement because any law without political will is a toothless bulldog.

“We call on both the church and mosque in the country to stand up to be counted in the fight against indecent dressing. Afterall both the Bible and the Qur’an forbid indecent dressing. Our call is all-encompassing. We condemn indecent dressing among women as well as among men. It is common these days to find men wearing earings, weaving their hair like women, sagging and wearing tattered jeans.

“I Corinthians 11:4-13 requests women to be properly dressed. Deuteronomy 22:5 goes on to say, ‘A woman shall not wear anything that pertains to a man, nor shall a man put on a woman's garment, for all who do so are an abomination to the Lord your God.’ Yet we find our women wearing tight-fitting trousers with blouses or shirts that stop above the navel.

“Qur’an 7:26 – 27 equally reminds mankind with the words, ‘O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness is the best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember (verse 26).

“It continues in verse 27, ‘Oh Children of Adam! Let not Satan deceive you in the manner he deceived your parents out of Paradise, pulling off from them their clothing to reveal to them their shame. He (Shaytan, i.e. Satan) and his agents watch you from a place where you cannot see them. We made Shaytan a friend for those who have no faith.’

“It is obvious, therefore, that women who go out half naked in public and men who wear earings, weave their hair like women, sag their trousers and wear tattered jeans are deceived by Shaytan. A word is enough for the wise.”
