MURIC ABUJA TO OYO DSS: IS MUSLIM RIGHTS ACTIVISM A CRIME?

Friday, 23rd December, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC ABUJA TO OYO DSS: IS MUSLIM RIGHTS ACTIVISM A CRIME?

It came to our knowledge that men of the Department of State Security Services (DSS), Ibadan, Oyo State, invited the director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Professor Ishaq Akintola, to come from Lagos to Ibadan for questioning simply because he spoke against a school principal who forced Muslim students to sing Christmas carol and he also criticized the state governor for doing nothing on the several cases of repression of Muslim students in the state.

While we acknowledge the vital role DSS is playing in maintaining security, we are of the opinion that this invitation is full of risks. People are being kidnapped on Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the city of Ibadan itself is under siege from political thugs, hooligans and hoodlums most of whom enjoy the patronage of the state government whose governor MURIC criticized.

It therefore becomes double risk for our director to honour the invitation from such a distance without proper investigation. Our director has no bodyguards. What if he is attacked by political thugs at Ibadan toll gate? Some people are not comfortable with the role played by MURIC during elections and they may want him out of circulation, at least for the period of the elections only to be released after the election is over?

What if such people arrange for him to be ambushed and kidnapped. Will DSS Ibadan office admit that they were the ones who invited him to Ibadan?

The fact that the invitation came through a phone call makes it more risky because we are still not sure if indeed it was the DSS Ibadan office that called him in the first place. Kidnappers play many tricks these days. It would have been better if the DSS had brought a written invitation.

The Osun State chapter of MURIC demanded for a written invitation in a press statement issued a few days ago but DSS Oyo State has ignored their request. It makes us doubt the origin of that invitation.

We are of the opinion that the DSS Oyo state is under the guidance of ethical behaviour as laid down in its rules of engagement and it should behave as such without any bias or intimidation from any quarters whatsoever the situation may be. Our director, Professor. Ishaq Akintola has no relationship with either Boko Haram or ISWAP. Rather, he founded a peaceful Islamic human rights organization whose motto is ‘Dialogue, No Violence’ and the group has remained loyal to its avowed motto to date.

That is why Professor Ishaq Akintola and his Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has never been associated with any crime, act of violence or immorality up till today. We are therefore surprised that the DSS of Oyo State has invited this peace-loving Muslim rights activist simply because he questioned the forceful involvement of Muslim students in singing Christmas carol. We are asking ‘Is that a Crime?’

Why then has the DSS Oyo State invited our director? Or is it because he said Muslims should vote out Governor Makinde of Oyo State for condoning the repression of Muslim students in the state’s public schools? How many pastors has the DSS Oyo State invited for their provocative statements?

The DSS is a respected security institution. Oyo State DSS should not tarnish this good image by allowing itself to become a tool of persecution in the hands of the state governor. Besides, MURIC has always appreciated the role of all the security agencies in curbing insecurity in Nigeria and we have always condemned those unpatriotic elements who kill security agents and destroy their buildings. So what is our crime now?

It is well known that Yoruba Muslims are going through a lot of persecution and marginalization. MURIC happens to have been very vocal in condemning the violation of the fundamental human rights of Yoruba Muslims not only in Oyo State, or the South West but in Nigeria as a whole. The struggle for human rights has become a task of doing the right thing for the right people in this country.

As such, Oyo State DSS ought to get the TRUTH reaching out to the reality on ground rather than taking steps capable of silencing the voice of the oppressed Muslims of Nigeria. As an institution of the federal republic of Nigeria, DSS is accountable and responsible to the entire Nigeria communities irrespective of their social, religious and political affiliation. DSS should be conscious of the rights of the Muslim Ummah as well as the rights of the Christians in Nigeria and it should not try to silence any group.

The invitation from Oyo State DSS to the Director of MURIC is seen by Nigerian Muslims as an attack on free speech among Muslims. It is being interpreted as meaning that Christians can say whatever they like but Muslims should keep quiet. DSS headquarters in Abuja has never been influenced by the current president of Nigeria to invite or arrest any of his bitter critics particularly pastors who spit out nothing but lies and incitement on a daily basis against this gentleman president.

We advise DSS Oyo State to learn from its headquarters. The invitation to Akintola is already creating tension among Nigerian Muslims. What we need most now in Nigeria is peace. DSS Oyo State does not have to obey unlawful ‘instructions’ from anybody in the state. They shouldn't complicate the socio-economic stability in the South West.

The Christian political and business elite in the South West has been in government as Governors, Deputy-Governors and commissioners for the past two decades excluding the Muslims out of the political space in Nigeria. Balance of the skewed political structures on this point is what Professor Ishaq Akintola is asking for.

Why should a particular religion (Christian) dominate the political space in South West states living side-by-side with the Muslim communities in the country? Who structured this abnormality in the South West?

DSS Oyo State is advised to avoid violating the fundamental human rights of our director. We are very worried that Oyo DSS wants him to travel from Lagos State to Oyo State in this period of insecurity just to answer questions. Is he a security threat?

We want their public relations department to tell Nigerians why a seventy year old man  and senior citizen should be made to go through such hazard.

Anyway, Muslims of Oyo State have said that they will all follow Akintola any time he is coming to the DSS office. Afterall he is fighting for them. This is something Oyo State DSS should try as much as possible to avoid. That invitation is seen as a form of harassment. It has provoked Oyo State Muslims. DSS should not try to silence Muslims.

However, we need to state that MURIC is not an enemy of the DSS. It is only criminals and unpatriotic citizens who hate, kill or work against security agents of their country. On the contrary, MURIC really appreciates the role being played by the DSS in Nigeria against criminals and enemies of our great country. We want you to continue to protect innocent citizens. We are with you and we condemn all enemies of the Nigerian security agents. We condemn those who kill policemen and burn police stations. They are just adding to Nigeria’s security problems.

We advise all security agents to always formalize their invitation to suspects who have to come from long distances. Phone calls can be doubted. It can be exploited by criminals. Security agents should also use their nearest offices to invite those they intend to question. In these days of general insecurity, it is dangerous to invite somebody from Lagos to Ibadan, from Enugu to Port Harcourt, or from Kaduna to Abuja without escort. Security agents may be held responsible if something serious happens to those invited from long distances. Nigerian Muslims cherish Akintola. DSS should not endanger his life  by inviting him on phone next time.

Long Live the DSS. Long Live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

FORCEFUL REMOVAL OF HIJAB IN LAGOS SCHOOL: THERE MUST BE CONSEQUENCES – MURIC

22nd December, 2022

PRESS RELEASE:

FORCEFUL REMOVAL OF HIJAB IN LAGOS SCHOOL: THERE MUST BE CONSEQUENCES – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has called on the Ministry of Education in Lagos State to investigate and take visible punitive action against the principal of Eletu Odibo Junior High School and other teachers involved in the snatching of hijab from the head of a school girl.

MURIC made the call on Thursday, 22nd December, 2022 through a press statement issued by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads :

“Our attention has been drawn to an ugly scene whereby the principal of Eletu Odibo Junior High School, Mrs. Christiana Sofuye, ordered the forceful removal of the hijab from the head of a female student, Mujeebah AbdulQadri, a JSS 2 student of the school right on the school assembly (https://iwitness.com.ng/lagos-school-principal-defies-supreme-court-on-hijab/).

“This action is provocative, unlawful, illegal, illegitimate and unconstitutional. Apart from constituting assault on the person of an innocent girl child, it is an act of contempt of the Supreme Court ruling of 17th July, 2022 which legitimised the use of hijab in Lagos schools.

“It is also an act of wilful disobedience to constituted authority particularly coming after the state government had issued a clear directive via an official circular that was given wide publicity (https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2022/12/06/lagos-approves-use-of-hijab-in-all-schools/). This forceful removal is reckless, thoughtless and barbaric.

“Attacking female Muslim students for using hijab is child abuse. It is flagrant violation of the United Nations Convention on Child’s Rights. Article 28 of the UN Convention lays emphasis on the right of every child to education. It says inter alia:

All children have the right to a primary education… Discipline in

schools should respect children’s dignity. For children to benefit

from education, schools must be run in an orderly way – without

the use of violence. Any form of school discipline should take

into account the child's human dignity. Therefore, governments

must ensure that school administrators review their discipline

policies and eliminate any discipline practices involving physical

or mental violence, abuse or neglect.

“The personal dignity of Mujeebah AbdulQadri was infringed upon when her hijab was snatched from her head on the school assembly. The principal needs to be educated that the right to the dignity of the human person is entrenched in Section 34 (b) & (c) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended (2011) which says, ‘Every individual is entitled to respect for the dignity of his person’.

“Furthermore, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Article 4, Clause 1 & 2 also says, ‘Human beings are inviolable. Every human being shall be entitled to respect for his life and the integrity of his person.’

“We are shocked to our marrows that Mrs. Sofuye could shun the Lagos State circular of 6th December, 2022 which ordered school administrators to allow the use of hijab. More disturbing is that no action has been taken against the culprits nine days after the ugly incident.

“This lackadaisical attitude is capable of giving the impression that the authorities are testing the will of the Lagos State Muslim community, condoning acts of impunity and illegality against them and promoting violence.

“Although MURIC does not condone violence, certain elements outside mainstream Islamic organisations in the state who are sympathetic to the cause of the victim of this act of unprovoked aggression and who also believe that nobody has the monopoly of violence may be tempted to take the law into their hands by physically confronting those who subject their loved ones either within or outside the school’s premises. This can be avoided by ensuring that justice is carried out and by giving publicity to action or actions taken by the authorities.

“This is why the Ministry of Education needs to move fast in ensuring swift and commensurate disciplinary action against the culprits. Apart from violating the law, there must be consequences for causing embarrassment to the state government.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that a school principal and her teachers who took actions contrary to the clear directive of the state government has embarrassed the latter. They need to explain why disciplinary action should not be taken against them.

“The school principal and her teachers who are responsible for this act of impunity must not only be punished for their recalcitrance, they must be seen to have been adequately castigated. Presently there is tension among Lagos Muslims. Therefore, a mild disciplinary action like ordinary transfer may not appease frayed nerves. Only a visible, pragmatic and commensurate punitive action can de-escalate the tense atmosphere.”

JOINT MURIC/OPC-R PRESS CONFERENCE ON 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AS IT AFFECTS THE YORUBA PEOPLE

JOINT MURIC/OPC-R PRESS CONFERENCE ON 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION AS IT AFFECTS THE YORUBA PEOPLE HELD AT THE OPC-R SECRETARIAT, ISHERI, LAGOS ON TUESDAY, 20TH DECEMBER, 2022.

Chief Francis Oludare Adesope, president, the Reformed Oodua People's Congress (OPC-R),
Members of the OPC-R
Members of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC)
Greatest Muricians! Greatest Muricians!!
Leaders and members of organisations here present
Gentlemen of the Press

As-Salaam alaykunm wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu.

I welcome you all to this joint MURIC/OPC-Reformed press conference.

The rationale for the press conference is the need to sensitise the South West concerning the coming 2023 presidential election in which a bona fide Yoruba candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is a major contestant.

This is not the first time MURIC will be collaborating with the OPC-Reformed. We held a similar exercise on 9th September, 2020 to diffuse tension in Yorubaland and to make peace reign ( https://dailypost-ng.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/dailypost.ng/2020/09/09/muric-it-is-wrong-to-be-fighting-your-kinsmen-opc-tells-yorubas/).

It is also on record that the late OPC leader, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, collaborated with MURIC during his lifetime. He attended the interfaith symposium organised by MURIC at the University of Lagos about 20 years ago. He was one of the speakers at the event.

We are indeed very happy to be associated with the OPC-Reformed under the able leadership of Chief Francis Oludare Adesope. We will continue to Forster this friendship because it is promoting cordial relationship among Muslims, Christians and traditionalists for overall peace and security in Yorubaland and Nigeria in general.

2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION :

It is our belief that the Yoruba has every reason to support their kinsman, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, being the most eminently qualified among all the candidates.

It is also our submission that all issues of Yoruba separatist agitation will be addressed and resolved if a Yoruba man emerges as president come 2023. We have no doubt that those complaining of marginalisation of Yorubaland are most likely to give a son of the soil listening ears once Tinubu becomes president.

It is in this regard that we are calling on the Yoruba to give peace and unity a chance by rallying behind their son, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

We remind the Yorubas of the lyrics of the late Hubert Ogunde song, Yoruba Ronu, i.e.
Yorubas should reflect, 'Ro, ro, ro, Yoruba ronu o. Yoruba yo yo yo bi ina ale, Yoruba ru, ru, ru bi omi okun, Yoruba baba ni baba nse.
Ro, ro, ro, Yoruba ronu o.'

The North has been in power for eight years. It will give the North almost 20 year rule if another Northerner becomes president again. We must vote for Tinubu in order to avoid that predicament. Remember that Ogunde said 'Ori ki mai buru titi ko pogun odun...' (One should not remain unlucky for 20 years). It is now the turn of the South and a highly competent Yoruba politician has succeeded in winning the presidential primaries.

'Awa lo kan. E gbe kini yi wa'. We must not allow this golden opportunity to slip past us. We missed it in the days of our great leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. We missed it in the days of Chief M. K  O. Abiola. We must get it right this time. It will be a monumental mistake for the Yorubas to reject Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He is our son. He has the pedigree. His record is unbeaten and the fact that Lagos is the Makkah of all Nigerians today is enough proof of his competence.

MURIC AND THE YORUBA PEOPLE :

We are constrained to affirm that our organization is prepared to work hand in hand with all tribes in the country. MURIC is a multi-ethnic organisation and we will never work against any tribe.

The allegation leveled against MURIC in certain quarters particularly in publications of Alaroye newspaper that MURIC is an enemy of the Yoruba people is false and this joint press conference with the OPC-Reformed is a clear evidence that MURIC is a friend of the Yoruba People, not an enemy. It is the demand of MURIC for the fundamental human rights of Muslims in Yorubaland that some people mischievously interprete as anti-Yoruba stand. This is wrong and misleading.

We appeal to separatists groups who are demanding the creation of a Yoruba nation out of the present entity to give peace a chance as we are certain that issues at stake would have been covered by the time Tinubu occupies Aso Rock.

INTEGRATE OPC INTO AMOTEKUN CORP :

It is well known that it was the OPC that saved the South West from the constant attacks of armed robbers. They boldly confronted armed criminals and they were able to subdue them particularly between 1985 and 2005. They were not paid for their services and many members of the OPC died while confronting the hoodlums.

Unfortunately the various governments of the South West forgot the OPC when they established an official security outfit called Amotekun. MURIC declares that this is unfair.

We call on governments in the South West to review their recruitment method into Amotekun with a view to integrating original OPC members from different factions (Fasehun, Gani Adams and OPC-Reformed under Chief Francis Oludare Adesope). This will strengthen the security of Yorubaland. Government should not insist on educational qualification alone.

Greatest Muricians! Greatest Muricians!!
There is victory for us
In the struggle for our rights
There's victory for us...

When I remember Awolowo my eye run away me oooooo
Aye, aye, my eye run away me oooooo
When I remember MKO my eye run away me oooooo

MUSO! MUSO!! MUSO OOO!!!
GIDIGBO! GIDIGBO!! GIDIGBO OOOO!!!
YEE YEEEEEE!!!

My dear friend, Chief Francis Oludare Adesope, President, OPC-R, distinguished members, Gentlemen of the press, thank you for listening. Allah bless you all.

*DSS INVITATION TO AKINTOLA: DO THEY WANT TO SILENCE US? – MURIC OYO STATE CHAPTER*

MUSLIM RIGHTS CONCERN (MURIC), OYO STATE CHAPTER.

*DSS INVITATION TO AKINTOLA: DO THEY WANT TO SILENCE US? – MURIC OYO STATE CHAPTER*

The Muslim Rights Concern, Oyo State Chapter, has pledged to accompany Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Director of the organization, any time he wants to honour the invitation sent to him by the Department of State Services (DSS), Ibadan, Oyo State. The invitation is alleged to be over the organisation’s recent statement on Muslim students in a public school who were forced to sing Christmas carol last week.

MURIC’s release which was signed by Professor Akintola and dated December 12, 2022, had accused Governor Seyi Makinde of aiding and abetting the age long oppression of Muslims in Oyo State through Oyo State school authorities.

MURIC cited the example of St Annes schools, Molete, Ibadan, whose principals forced Muslim students and Muslim teachers to join in the singing of Christmas carol.

MURIC condemned the action as extremist, feudalistic and provocative.

The attention of Oyo State MURIC has been drawn to the invitation extended to Professor Ishaq Akintola by Oyo State DSS office by-passing the state branch of MURIC.

Our Director committed no offence, rather Governor Makinde  should channel his energy in the fight against those unfairness activities committed under his watch.

MURIC Oyo State chapter endorses the press statement on what Muslims are going through in Oyo State and we hereby reproduce part of it. ‘Under Seyi Makinde’s watch, Muslim students were herded like sheep to attend the crusade of a German Christian crusader, Evangelist Daniel Kolenda in November 2021. Oyo State public schools were used for the crusade during school hours.

‘Again under Makinde’s watch, Muslim applicants attending a screening exercise for appointment were made to answer questions on the Bible in August 2020. Under Makinde’s watch, Muslim teachers were forced to attend a screening exercise on Salah day in July 2022. Yet these are schools using public funds and Muslims are the majority among tax-payers in the state’.

The DSS should extend her invitation to us at Oyo State MURIC, not only Professor Akintola, and we will honour it.

Prof Akintola is only Director of MURIC but there are 36 state chairmen and Abuja chairman. MURIC has come to stop the oppression of the Muslim that started during colonisation. MURIC is the voice of oppressed Nigerian Muslims. We will not allow anyone to silence us.
