STOP INFLUENCE OF KINGS ON YORUBA IMAMS - MURIC

8th January 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

STOP INFLUENCE OF KINGS ON YORUBA IMAMS - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights advocacy group, has advised Muslims in Yorubaland to put a stop to the influence of kings on Imams. The group argued that this old practice is one of the misplaced syncretic and socio-religious norms in the Yoruba society.

The advice was given in a statement issued on Monday, 8th January, 2024 by the Executive Director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"Contrary to the tenets of Islam, Yoruba kings have tremendous influence on the Imams in their domain. This has been so from the advent of Islam in Yorubaland which dates back to the 16th century.

"We have seen this in many Yoruba cities particularly whenever an Imam dies and a new one is about to be appointed. The kings often influence the choice of the new Imam particularly where the post is competitive. It is also the king who gives the Imam the staff of office.

"This is an erroneous, archaic and obnoxious practice because the king has no role whatsoever to play in the imamate under the Shari'ah, particularly where Islam is not used as the form of government (a non-Islamic State). This is different from what applies in an Islamic state where Islamic political thought is the state policy and the khalifah is equally the Imam.

"The greatest danger in this is that the Oba (king) may impose a Muslim favourite who has no appropriate prerequisites for the post of Imam on the Muslims. This has dire consequences. Already, some crisis brewing in some towns in Yorubaland can be traced to this ugly phenomenon.

"It is even worse where the king is not a Muslim. A Christian or traditionalist as king dictating to the Imam or influencing decisions and steps to be taken by Muslims is a complete anomaly in Islam. It is absurd, illogical, irrational and therefore unacceptable. Many mosques have been ordered closed by non-Muslim kings using the most trivial and ridiculous pretext.

"MURIC warns Muslims in Yorubaland to free themselves from the shackles of sycophancy and syncretism. The practice of putting Imams under the control of the king is a clog in the wheel of progress for Muslim communities.

"For the avoidance of doubts, we are not advocating confrontation between the Oba (king) and the Imam, what we are saying is that their places and status are entirely different. The Oba is the head of the traditional institution. The Imam is the head of the Muslim community.

"In actual fact the Oba plays a role greater than that of the Imam because he heads the whole city, including the Muslim and Christian subjects whereas the Imam only heads the Muslim segment of the population. Both the Muslims and Christian citizens recognize the Oba as their traditional ruler but what we are saying is that the Oba must not interfere in their religious affairs.

"But the paradox lies in the fact that while the Oba wields such immense power on the mosque and the Imam, he has no such influence on the church and the bishop. Yoruba Obas control the Imams in their cities but they dare not try the same with the pastors and bishops. Muslims need to think about this.

"Muslims in Yorubaland must therefore use every lawful means to sever themselves from the Oba's umbilical cords. The Yoruba Ummah (Muslim community) cannot make real progress until this is done.

"We urge the relevant Islamic organizations to step up enlightenment of the Muslim populace in Yorubaland towards achieving autonomy for the Imamate. The League of Imams in Yorubaland, the Muslim Ummah of South-West Nigeria (MUSWEN) and other Islamic organizations have a big role to play in this regard.

“This is not the responsibility of any federal, state or local government. Neither does it concern any state assembly, Senate or the House of Representatives. It requires no form of legislation because no government imposed the Obas on the Imams and it is not written in any law that the traditional rulers should decide matters of the Imamate.

“This harmful policy was self-imposed by the Muslims in times of ignorance. What is clear to us is that the Muslims need no revolution to change it. All it requires is the spiritual will to stop all external remote controls of the Ummah so that Yoruba Muslims will be able to think like Muslims who have Muslim minds, not like Muslims who possess colonial cum traditional mentality in Muslim bodies.

“How can the body function properly when the mind is alien to it? How can the Muslims operate as one united community when they have leaders who pay allegiance to the agents of neo-imperialism?

“What the Muslims need to set themselves free from the control of traditional rulers is a change of mindset and a determination to liberate themselves from traditional slavery. The Glorious Qur’an says, “Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change their own ways” (13:11).

“The wind of freedom for Yoruba Muslims is blowing. The tickets of freedom train is readily available for those willing to liberate themselves. To start with, the League of Imams and MUSWEN must step out boldly to stop the involvement of Obas in the appointment and installation of new Imams across the region.

“We are not rejecting the Obas totally and categorically. Let them be invited as royal guests without playing any authoritative role. They must be given recognition. They must also be respected. But they must stay away from the Imams and the Imamate.

“We appeal to Muslims throughout the South-West to desist from going to court over disputes concerning the post of Imam or issues affecting their mosques. It is unethical, condescending and despicable. Most of the judges are non-Muslims and they are not in a position to understand Islamic points of view.

“How can you ask a plumber to service your car? It makes no sense. Majority of court cases which resulted in the closure of mosques for years were decided by non-Muslims. It will not be wise for two quarreling rats to take their case to the cat. Both of them will end up in the cat’s belly.

“Instead of going to conventional courts where non-Muslim judges are most likely to make a mess of cases involving mosques and Imams, Muslim communities and Imams who have disagreements should take their cases to the League of Imams or to MUSWEN. Both groups have branches in all Yoruba towns and villages. More importantly, they have eminently qualified Shari’ah experts capable of giving justice to cases involving Muslims.

“From now on, any Yoruba Oba who unilaterally orders the closure of any mosque will face the wrath of Muslims. All forms of remote control of the Ummah from non-Muslim quarters must stop. Let the Muslims go!”

SHARE TINUBU RICE NOW : MURIC TELLS LAWMAKERS

5th January 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

SHARE TINUBU RICE NOW : MURIC TELLS LAWMAKERS

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called on members of the National Assembly (NASS) to ensure proper distribution of thousands of bags of rice and other foodstuffs recently given to them for sharing by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

MURIC made the call in a statement issued on Friday, 5th January, 2024 by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"Each of Nigeria's 109 Senators allegedly received N200 million worth of foodstuffs while their 360 counterparts in the House of Representatives were given N100 million worth each (http://sundiatapost.com/tinubu-orders-palliatives-distribution-through-nass-members/).

"Although a honourable member of the House from Edo was seen in a video gone viral displaying a warehouse filled with thousands of bags of rice, some senators and reps are still denying that they collected palliatives from the president (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/656335-were-yet-to-receive-n200m-tinubus-palliatives-senate.html).

"We see this as an attempt to mull or trivialize the Federal Government's efforts at ameliorating the sufferings of the hoi polloi. Some of our lawmakers are causing confusion.

"How can only one lawmaker openly show his constituents thousands of bags of rice while the rest keep mum? How can the reps admit collecting massive palliatives while senators deny receiving anything (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/656335-were-yet-to-receive-n200m-tinubus-palliatives-senate.html)? Is the Senate filled with saboteurs and confusionists?

"MURIC demands urgent and immediate clarification from the leaderships of both Senate and the House of Representatives. Where are their spokespersons? They must speak up before it is too late. Delay is dangerous. Nigerians are hungry. This is the kind of thing that provokes the people. Procrastination is the thief of time. Anarchists look for lacuna like this to spread their tales of horror in order to incite the masses against government.

"We appeal to the remaining members of the House who have received the palliatives to quickly begin the sharing among their constituents.  We also remind them to add publicity to the exercise. This release of a humongous number of bags of foodstuffs deserves an equally aggressive information outflow.

"There are too many enemies of progress out there spreading falsehood and the only way to silence them is to spread information about positive acts of government whenever it happens.

“Meanwhile we appeal to the good Nigerian people to exercise a little patience while the logistics are being sorted out by the lawmakers. This is definitely no fault of the government. Tinubu and Shettima have done what they should do by rolling out palliatives. The rest is in the hanhuman ds of our lawmakers.

“MURIC will like to assure Nigerians that we will not stop calling out the lawmakers until they distribute what they have received. We are not just here for Allah-given fundamental rights of Muslims alone. We are also here for the welfare of every single Nigerian regardless of creed, ethnicity or gender.

“Our vision of Nigeria is that of a nation where people live together in peace and harmony, a nation in which no one is oppressed, where every citizen enjoys Allah-given fundamental human rights regardless of class, creed, or ethnicity.

“We remain oppressed until those golden principles of Islamic liberation theology are actualized, namely, freedom of worship for all, emancipation for the oppressed, justice for the persecuted, jobs for the jobless, food for the hungry, healing for the sick, clothing apparels for the naked and shelter for the homeless.”

MURIC HAILS FG FOR SUSPENDING DEGREES FROM BENIN, TOGO

3rd January 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC HAILS FG FOR SUSPENDING DEGREES FROM BENIN, TOGO

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has commended the Federal Government (FG) for suspending the accreditation of degrees obtained from the Republic of Benin and Togo.

The ban on accreditation followed the discovery of irregular and fraudulent practices in the admission and course programs of some universities in the two countries.

MURIC's commendation came through a statement issued by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Wednesday 3rd January, 2024.

He said:

"A laudable move was  made yesterday by the Federal Government (FG) when it suspended the accreditation of degrees from the Republic of Benin and Togo for their irregularities and fraudulent practices (FG Suspends Accreditation Of Degree Certificates From Benin Republic, Togo, channelstv.com/2024/01/02/fg-https://x.com/channelstv/status/1742138294354260058?t=B0vsPkspjw4eWuz5Gb-i2Q&s=09)

"It will be recalled that Umar Audu, an investigative journalist of Daily Nigeria newspaper, reported recently that he bagged a degree within six weeks of being admitted into one of such universities and also served as a corper in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with the certificate obtained. The undercover journalist received both the transcript and certificate of the Ecole Superieure de Gestion et de Technologies (ESGT), Cotonou, Benin Republic after six weeks only.

It was this story that prompted FG to ban the accreditation of certificates obtained from universities in those countries (https://dailynigerian.com/undercover-how-daily-nigerian/).

.

"MURIC lauds FG for banning those fraudulent certificates. The holders of such fake credentials pose grave danger to the lives of Nigerians and the quality of public service too.

"We charge the ministries of education at both federal and state levels to be wary of holders of such certificates. Those found to have been employed with them should be shown the way out. Furthermore, the security agencies should fish out those behind the fraudulent admissions within Nigeria. Those are agents of the fake tertiary institutions in faraway Benin and Togo. They should be made to face the full wrath of the law.

“We demand investigation into circumstances surrounding the clearance letter issued by the Federal Ministry of Education which confirmed that the university (ESGT) is on the ministry’s list of accredited institutions. It was this letter which enabled NYSC to accept 51 fake graduates to serve in the scheme.  On its own part, NYSC authorities must take necessary action on the 51 fake corpers from ESGT who are serving illegally. They must be flushed out.

"We also advise gullible but innocent Nigerians who have obtained the certificates to quickly set the machinery in motion to correct the anomaly. They should upgrade themselves by seeking authentic university admission either within or outside the country.

"Education may be the key to technological breakthrough and the concomitant industrial progress, but half-baked education and fake certificates are deadly dynamites in the system which are capable of destroying everything that may have been achieved.

“Before we draw the curtain, we find the undercover journalist equally worthy of encomiums. He went underground to unearth this educational fraud. He put his life on the line for the sake of his country. Umar Audu is worthy of emulation by his colleagues in the Fourth Estate of the Realm.”

AVOID MISLEADING AND PROVOCATIVE HEADLINES : MURIC TELLS MEDIA

1st January 2024

NEW YEAR MESSAGE:

AVOID MISLEADING AND PROVOCATIVE HEADLINES : MURIC TELLS MEDIA

The Nigerian media has been advised to avoid misleading and provocative headlines and reports. The advice was given on Monday 1st January, 2024 in a new year message by the Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full message reads:

"As Nigeria enters the new year 2024, we call attention to the need for the media to avoid misleading and provocative headlines and reports.

"A good example is the recent publication by a Nigerian tabloid whose caption read 'SHOCKING REVELATION: As Sultan of Sokoto Explains why Muslims Killed over 150 Christains were killed in Plateau'

"This is very misleading and provocative. The worst part is that the report is false and the authors know it. The Sultan never made such a statement.

"Interestingly enough, the content of the news did not match the sensational headline. The story only revealed how the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa'ad Abubakar, affirmed that the recent killings in the Plateau was not driven by religious animosity.

"But the publishers veered off course while giving the story a caption to falsely and maliciously portray the Sultan as admitting that it was Muslims who perpetrated the recent Plateau mayhem. Even the caption itself was full of errors which exposes the low level of the intellect of those behind the story.

“Provocative headlines that do not reflect the real story are very dangerous because most people will only read the captions without reading the real contents. Yet they will base their reaction on the small topic which seen by them.

"MURIC strongly denounces the practice of seeking to generate traffic to media sites through false, misleading and provocative headlines, particularly those that fail to match the story. It is selfish, wicked, unprofessional and unpatriotic.

"This is the kind of caption that can set the nation on fire. There must be consequences for such reckless and dangerous publications. We believe that both the security agencies and those in charge of broadcasts and the spread of information should map out strategies for ensuring that culprits are promptly sanctioned. Nigeria will never become a sane society unless people are checked against recklessness and impunity.

"Finally, MURIC charges Nigerians to eschew reckless statements and provocative publications as we go into the new year. Nigeria needs peace to grow. Let us understand our differences and learn to live with them instead of pursuing clashes of cultures."
