RENO OMOKRI ON FREE FRIDAY: WE ARE VINDICATED – MURIC

2nd September, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

RENO OMOKRI ON FREE FRIDAY: WE ARE VINDICATED – MURIC

A former presidential aide, Mr. Reno Omokri, recently shocked Nigerians when he openly asserted that Muslims in the country were being cheated as they are denied work-free Fridays while their Christian counterparts had the whole of Saturday and Sunday free.

Reacting to the statement which went viral, an Islamic civil liberties organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has described Mr. Omokri as one of the most intellectually active, politically detribalised and religiously liberal Christians in Nigeria.

The group said Mr. Omokri’s declaration on the need for work-free Friday has vindicated its stand since 1994. It therefore called on the various governments at both federal and state levels, particularly in the Muslim dominated North, to put an end to the oppression of Muslims by declaring Friday work-free.

The statement continued:

“A former presidential aide, Mr. Reno Omokri, recently made headlines when he openly asserted that Muslims in the country were being cheated as they were denied work-free Fridays while their Christian counterparts had the whole of Saturday and Sunday free (https://tribuneonlineng.com/muslims-working-on-fridays-is-unfair-while-sunday-is-work-free-reno-omokri/).

“We know Mr. Reno Omokri is a patriot nulli secundus and a progressive Nigerian. He is also, indubitably, one of the most intellectually active, politically detribalised and religiously liberal Christians in Nigeria.

“Mr. Omokri’s declaration on the need for work-free Friday has vindicated our stand since 1994 when our organization (MURIC) was established. We have been demanding work-free Fridays for the past 31 years using every peaceful and legitimate means available.

“The Founder and Executive Director of MURIC went as far as writing a book on the subject-matter. The book, a 138-page affair captioned ‘The Friday Question’, (At-Tawheed Publications, Lagos, 1993; second edition 2021) was launched at the Ansar-ud-deen Hall, Surulere, Lagos in 1994 under the chairmanship of the former secretary general of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the late Dr. Lateef Adegbite.

“MURIC has been called several unprintable names for demanding work-free Friday while its leader has been falsely labelled an extremist, a religious fanatic, a fundamentalist, a terrorist, etc all because he is an advocate of civil liberty for Nigerian Muslims. But the truth has come to the open through a most unexpected source, through a Christian social crusader.

“Mr. Reno Omokri is a household name in Nigeria today. He is known for his bold and objective pronouncements regardless whose ox is gored. This man will not delve into the Friday question if there was no merit in it.

“We hail Reno Omokri for speaking up in this manner. It is not his first time of revealing the truth on issues that are wrongly understood in this country. Reno Omokri is definitely one of the few Christian presidential materials. He is a guiding light, a president-in-waiting.

“The only difference between our advocacy for work-free Friday and that of Reno Omokri is that the latter wants work to stop by 12 noon on Friday while we are calling for the whole Friday to be work-free.

“The book, ‘The Friday Question’, dedicated a whole chapter to the logistics (pages 54 – 70 second edition, 2021). Six options ‘A’ to ‘F’ were put forward but option ‘C’ was picked as the most viable (pages 61 – 63).

“Option ‘C’ posits a thesis of a 3-day weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) with the suggestion that the eight hours lost on Friday can be made up for by adding two extra hours daily from Monday to Thursday. In which case workers may resume by 8 am and close by 6 pm or work from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.

“Unknown to those who oppose the idea of a work-free Friday, including the federal and state governments, a work-free Friday will create an enlightened Muslim population. Nigerian Muslims will be able to learn more about their faith. Nigeria stands to gain a lot from this. For instance, it will reduce incidents of spontaneous violence among Muslims who react to perceived blasphemous statements.

“Nigerian Christians learn a lot about their faith on Sundays because Sundays are work-free’. On the contrary, Nigerian Muslims are shut up in a cage of ignorance every Friday morning only to be scattered like wild oats on Friday afternoon because they have to go to work in the morning, take permission to attend mosque for one hour in the afternoon around 1 pm and still return to work by 3 pm.

“Interestingly, while Christian families go to church together on Sundays, Muslim families are scattered from workplaces to schools. The Muslim husband cannot attend the same mosque with his wife as they both work in different places. Neither can the Muslim father take his children to the same mosque because the father is at work while the children are in their various schools. Muslim families are therefore ‘scattered’ by the present system while Christian families are united.

“The impact on Muslim children has now become very obvious. Many of them become half-baked Muslims. Unfortunately some of such half-baked Muslims become leaders in later life and this reflects in their lackadaisical approach to religious issues. People can only give what they have.

“Our experience over the years have revealed that the absence of work-free Friday is at the root of the existence of a subconscious Muslim population in the country, particularly the South West. On the contrary, the vibrancy of the Christians in the same region can be attributed to what they learn in church on their work-free Sundays.

“While religious radicalism, Boko Haram and banditry in the North can be traced to poverty and the wide gap between the rich and the poor in that region, area boys syndrome and ‘agbero’ mentality which are common among Muslim youths in the South can be attributed to the lack of proper Islamic enlightenment due to the absence of work-free Friday.

“We are saying, in essence, that Nigerians who have been opposing work-free Friday have been cutting their noses to spite their faces. In other words, they have been hurting themselves without knowing.

“A well-informed Muslim and Christian populace will benefit all. Ignorance is a disease. Whereas religion is expected to free mankind from evil acts, it has been the other way round for us in Nigeria where we practice acrobatic religiousity.

“The average Muslim insists on going on pilgrimage every year causing tremendous drain on the country’s scarce foreign exchange while the average Christian must go annually to Jerusalem. Meanwhile pilgrimage to Makka is only conditionally required once in a lifetime while there is no biblical injunction that makes pilgrimage to Jerusalem mandatory.

“We became enemies and rivals unto ourselves for no just cause. We cause untold suffering to perceived religious opposition groups. Nay, we do everything possible to delay the progress of the other camp. But worse still, we ambush ourselves, kill, maim, burn and destroy. Yet all is based on NAFDAC-registered ignorance.

“We therefore call on the various governments at both federal and state levels, particularly in the Muslim dominated North, to put an end to the oppression of Muslims by declaring Friday work-free.

“We recommend option ‘C’ as in the ‘Friday Question’ book for states willing to experiment work-free Friday. In this option, workers may resume by 8 am and close by 6 pm from Monday to Thursday, or work from 7.30 am to 5.30 pm.”

BLASPHEMY: MURIC DENOUNCES KILLING OF WOMAN IN NIGER

1st September, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

BLASPHEMY: MURIC DENOUNCES KILLING OF WOMAN IN NIGER

A woman simply identified as Amaye was killed by a mob on Saturday evening in Kasuwan-Garba town in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger state. Meanwhile, a faith-based civil liberties organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has denounced the killing as Bohemian, extrajudicial, barbaric and unIslamic.

The group made its stand known in a statement issued by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

“A woman simply identified as Amaye was killed by a mob in Kasuwan-Garba town in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger state. Amaye, a food vendor, was accused of uttering blasphemous words against Prophet Muhammad (SAW) at her restaurant while discussing with a customer.

“The incident occurred in the evening of Saturday, 30th August, 2025  (https://dailypost.ng/2025/08/31/mob-burns-woman-alive-over-alleged-blasphemy-in-niger/).

“MURIC condemns this killing in the strongest terms. It is Bohemian, extrajudicial, barbaric and unIslamic.

“The killers must be brought to book. We charge the Niger State Police Command to immediately set the machinery in motion to arrest, detain and prosecute the culprits. There will be no respect for the rule of law if mob killing goes unpunished.”

ATTACKS ON OLUWO ARE ISLAMOPHOBIC – MURIC

29th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

ATTACKS ON OLUWO ARE ISLAMOPHOBIC – MURIC

A faith-based civil liberties organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has described attacks on the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Rasheed Akanbi, as Islamophobic. The group rejected the allegation of use of marijuana levelled at the monarch and called those behind the accusation as rebellious subjects, unscrupulous elements, mud-slingers and Muslim-haters. The group also congratulated the Oluwo on his recent victory at the Court of Appeal.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday, 29th August, 2025 by the Executive Director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“Years after the installation of Oba Rasheed Akanbi (Telu I) as the Oluwo of Iwo, some envious Nigerians still call him names and launch false allegations at him. Our instinct tells us that it is the handiwork of rebellious subjects, unscrupulous elements, mud-slingers and Muslim-haters.

“It is Islamophobia. Some anti-Islam elements still find it difficult to tolerate Oluwo’s bold and truthful stand on his faith in Islam. As the most outspoken Muslim traditional ruler in Yorubaland, the desire of Muslim-haters is to silence him. They use both mainstream and social media to commit their nefarious atrocities.

“We remind these agent provocateurs that their actions constitute an infringement on Oluwo’s Allah-given fundamental human right. It amounts to cyberbullying contrary to Section 24(1)(a)(b) and 24(2)(a) – (c) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Act 2015.

“It is on record that the Oluwo himself has debunked these rumours. They are false, baseless and unfounded (https://crimechannels.com/i-dont-smoke-marijuana-famous-monarch-refutes-drug-allegations/). Therefore, anyone found indulging in such illegalities again may have to face the legal consequences.

“To this effect, the Osun State Chapter of MURIC has been directed to work closely with progressive groups in the city of Iwo in monitoring provocative pronouncements on both mainstream and social media targeted at the Oluwo.

“The aim is to catch scapegoats among those social media rascals and teach them one or two lessons in self-control and respect for the rights of others. If sanity is to be infused into this society, there must be consequences for recklessness, lawlessness and the violation of other people’s Allah-given fundamental human rights.

“This stereotyping must stop. There are certain operatives of the ‘Pull-Them-Down’ (PhD) syndrome in this country who have made it their business to profile successful Muslims. They will have MURIC to deal with first. It is our duty as an Islamic human rights organization to stand up for Muslims who face such persecution.

“To his Royal Highness, the Oluwo of Iwo (Telu I), we say ‘Keep up the good work you are doing. Continue to serve your subjects with faith and sincerity. Your critics are mere distractions. Remain focused in your dedication to Allah and loyalty to the Nigerian nation. May the crown remain on your head, the beads around your neck, the horse tail in your hand and the queens in your palace till your last day.

“As a digression, we seize this opportunity to congratulate the Oluwo on his recent victory at the Appeal Court.”

ALLEGED ARREST: SET RAMZI FREE OR ARRAIGN HIM – MURIC

26th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

ALLEGED ARREST: SET RAMZI FREE OR ARRAIGN HIM – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has urged the security agencies to either release Ramzi Abu Ibrahim or charge him to court. Ramzi was allegedly arrested at his home in Abuja last Friday.

MURIC’s demand was tabled in a statement issued on Tuesday, 26th August, 2025. The statement was signed by the group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“The president of the Palestinian Community in Nigeria, Mr. Ramzi Abu Ibrahim, was allegedly arrested on Friday, 22nd July, 2025 at his Abuja home. He has not been seen since. Neither has he been able to contact members of his family (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/816400-nigerian-authorities-reportedly-arrest-head-of-palestinian-community.html?).

“MURIC frowns at this Gestapo style of arrest. In particular, it will be remembered that we raised alarm when the Federal Government went into security alliance with Israel. We said the alliance posed serious security threat to Muslim leaders in Nigeria. This is perhaps one of the results of the deal with Israel.

“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Ramzi. Any security agency detaining him should release him or arraign him in a properly constituted court of jurisdiction.

“Detaining a suspect beyond the stipulated 48 hours without presenting him before a court of law is unlawful, illegal, illegitimate and unconstitutional. Mr. Ramzi is, reportedly, a citizen. His fundamental human rights should be respected.

“If Ramzi’s citizenship is not in contention, detaining him beyond the stipulated 48 hours is an infringement on his right to freedom of movement. This stands in contradistinction to Section 41 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which says inter alia, ‘Every citizen of Nigeria is entitled to move freely throughout Nigeria…’

“The right of citizens to move freely from state to state is a privilege and it serves as immunity of national citizenship. Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) also guarantees the right of citizens to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state.

“Ditto for Article 12 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and Article 12 of the African Charter on Human and People’s rights.

“We assert clearly, unequivocally and emphatically that the closer the Nigerian security agencies are to these laws the more civilized the Nigerian society will be and the more humane our government.”

2027: SOUTH WEST RIPE FOR MUSLIM GOVERNORS – MURIC

25th August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

2027: SOUTH WEST RIPE FOR MUSLIM GOVERNORS – MURIC

A faith-based rights advocacy group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has declared the South Western part of Nigeria ripe for Muslim governors. According to the group, all the six governors in the region in the past six years have been Christians. It therefore urged political parties in the region warming up for the 2027 general elections to pick Muslims as their gubernatorial candidates.

The declaration was contained in a press statement issued on Monday, 25th August, 2025 by the Executive Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“With the exception of Osun and Ekiti, gubernatorial elections will take place in the South West in 2027. Ekiti election will be held in July 2026 while that of Osun State will take place in August 2026.

“Meanwhile there has been religious imbalance in the administration of all the South Western states in the past six years as all of them brandish Christian governors to date. This has resulted in wide disconnect between the state governments and the Muslim populace.

“In addition, the development has been characterized with the exclusion of Muslims at both executive and administrative levels of governance. This, obviously, exposes the soft underbelly of democracy as it robs it of its most crucial component, namely, participation and inclusion. We submit that there can be no genuine democratic practice where a large section of the population is excluded from participating.

“We therefore advise political parties in the region to pick Muslims as their gubernatorial candidates. This will serve as a guarantee to secure Muslim votes in their gubernatorial elections.”

KATSINA 50: MUSLIM LIVES MATTER TOO – MURIC

23rd August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

KATSINA 50: MUSLIM LIVES MATTER TOO – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has expressed dismay over the killing of 50 Muslims during a prayer session inside their mosque in Malunfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The faith-based organization lamented the high death toll and wondered why the West, particularly the United States, is silent now that the victims are Muslims. MURIC reminded the global community that Muslim lives also matter. #MuslimLivesMatterToo

The group’s statement which was issued on Saturday, 23rd August, 2025, was signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

It reads:

“Bandits struck at Malunfashi Local Government Area last week killing 50 Muslims. 30 of the victims were killed inside the mosque while praying while the rest were burnt alive in their homes (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/regional/nwest/815559-katsina-massacre-20-burnt-bodies-discovered-as-death-toll-rises-to-50.html).

“The attacks took place across several communities at Gidan Adamu Mantau, Unguwar Yar Mai Dabo, Makera in Karfi ward, and Burdigau in Yaba ward between Monday night and Tuesday morning 4th and 5th August, 2025.

“We condemn these attacks in the strongest terms. They were gruesome, ferocious, inhuman and barbaric.

“MURIC calls on the security agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army to up their game in the northern region where insecurity is most visible. Momentary attacks on innocent civilians can be explained away but not attacks that last the whole night.

“What happened to army outposts? How effective is intelligence gathering among the civilians in those villages? Are we saying there have been no contacts between the security agencies and the villagers before the attacks? If the attacks were ‘reprisals’ as reported, why was there no forward-looking defence strategy?

“We frown at Western countries, particularly the United States, who feverishly ululate at the killing of any single Nigerian Christian but who conveniently go into dozing sessions when the victims are large number of innocent Muslim civilians. This selective activism only amplifies our belief in the absence of justice, equity and fair play in the global ecosystem.”

ISESE DAY: IT IS THEIR RIGHT BUT THEY TOO MUST RESPECT RIGHTS OF OTHERS – MURIC

21st August, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

ISESE DAY: IT IS THEIR RIGHT BUT THEY TOO MUST RESPECT RIGHTS OF OTHERS – MURIC

Traditionalists in the South West marked the Isese Day yesterday and they seized the opportunity to ask the Federal Government to declare every 21st and 22nd of August as national holidays.

Surprisingly, support for their demand came from the most unexpected quarter, namely, an Islamic human rights group called the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). But the support came with a conditionality, namely, that traditionalists must also respect the rights of others by putting a stop to the declaration of illegal curfews, restricting the movements of others, violation of the rights of women and the secret killing of human beings for ritual sacrifice.

MURIC revealed its support and attached conditions in a statement issued on Thursday, 21st August, 2025 by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“Traditionalists in Yorubaland marked the Isese Day yesterday, 20th August, 2025. They also used the opportunity to ask the Federal Government to declare every 21st and 22nd of August as national holidays.

“This demand is just, legitimate and constitutional. In so far as the other two religions enjoy the right, traditionalists also deserve it. Therefore, we have no objection to their demand.

“It is only a selfish man who will eat his fill and still stop others from eating. It is also only a fanatical worshipper that will freely worship according to his own faith but will disallow others from worshipping according to their own tastes.

“Islam teaches a philosophy of freedom of worship. The popular phrase ‘Lakun diinukunm wa liya diiin’, i.e. ‘For you is your religion, and for me is my religion’ (Glorious Qur’an 109:6) paraphrases the ideological stand of Islam on freedom of religion.

“We therefore declare loud and clear that we support the demand of followers of traditional religion for their own holidays to be known as Isese Day. Their holiday has nothing to do with our religion. It does not disturb us and it does not make us uncomfortable in any way. It is their own day of happiness. We cannot stand in their way on this because we believe in the philosophy of ‘Live and let live’.

“The classic fable of the ‘dog in the manger’ reminds us of a dog which ate its fill in terms of meat and bones but the same dog sat on a stack of hay and continued barking at a hungry cow thereby preventing it from eating. Dogs do not eat grass, yet this overfed dog will not allow a hungry cow to eat grass.

“This fable provides a perfect personification of the characteristics of those who do not need Shari’ah (because they already have common law) but will not allow the Muslims to practice Shari’ah. In the same vein, they will not allow the Muslims to have Hijrah holiday yet they already have New Year holiday. Neither will they allow Muslims to have a work-free Friday even though their Sunday is always free.

“But we cannot afford a tit for tat. As an Islamic human rights organization with a vision to build a nation that respects Allah-given fundamental human rights of all its citizens regardless of their religion, ethnicity or gender, we are duty bound to support all legitimate demands that are based on fundamental human rights regardless of their sources.

“Our vision of Nigeria is that of a nation where people live together in peace and harmony, a nation in which no one is oppressed, where every citizen enjoys Allah-given fundamental human rights regardless of class, creed or ethnicity.

“We are middle-roaders and socio-intellectual jihadists fighting corruption and extravagance, seeking freedom of worship for all, emancipation for the oppressed, justice for the persecuted, jobs for the jobless, food for the hungry, healing for the sick, clothing apparels for the naked and shelter for the homeless. All these are part of principles of Islamic liberation theology.

“That is why we will not be dogs in the manger like some people wish to be. We will support the demand for Isese Day. But with a proviso. We are attaching conditionalities to our support for the declaration of Isese Day based on the legal principle of 'ex dolo malo non oritur actio', i.e. he who comes to equity must come with clean hands.

“If the adherents of Isese religion (also known as traditionalists) demand the recognition or enforcement of their rights, they must first recognize and respect the rights of others. They must remove all the skeletons in their cupboards. They have come to equity. They must come with clean hands. They cannot eat their cakes and still have it.

“In which case all past infringements and encroachments on Allah-given fundamental human rights of others by the same adherents of Isese must stop. Put more succinctly, there shall be no more illegal curfews, no more unlawful restrictions of people’s movements particularly during Oro festivals, no more infractions on the rights of women, no more public flogging of innocent Nigerians by masquerades, no more killing of humans for ritual sacrifices, etc.

“It is noteworthy that Isese followers in Yorubaland are serial violators of people’s rights. They have always committed all the above crimes during their own festivals whereas Muslims and Christians have never placed restrictions on the general public either while worshiping or celebrating.

“We note with serious concern that some state governments in the South West have already recognized Isese Day by declaring yesterday, Wednesday, 20th August as a holiday. That was rather hasty. We are certain that it was done without consultation and without considering complaints of excesses and blatant impunity lodged by stakeholders. They have forgotten that peace building is a collective affair. The impunity of the Isese group has continued ad infinitum because these state governments have never held the Isese group accountable.

“While there have been several complaints lodged against the excesses of the traditionalists, the governments of the South West as well as the security agents often ignored the complaints (https://theeagleonline.com.ng/no-to-oro-curfew-24-hours-to-salah-muric/; https://dailypost.ng/2019/09/04/islamic-group-blows-hot-oro-cultists-impose-round-clock-curfew-ogun/; https://theeagleonline.com.ng/muric-to-gov-abiodun-stop-illegal-oro-curfew-now-to-avert-bloodshed/; https://www.legit.ng/nigeria/1590153-traditionalistsoro-worshippers-warn-lagosians-stay-indoor-of/).

“Chroniclers’ records are equally replete with internet links on attacks launched by the same Isese adherents on Christians in their churches as well as attacks on Muslims in their mosques (https://www.thecable.ng/one-dead-10-injured-as-traditionalists-clash-with-christians-in-lagos/; https://www.vanguardngr.com/2023/04/four-injured-as-traditionalists-attack-worshippers-inside-mosque-2/; https://www.herald.ng/drama-ogun-oro-worshipers/; https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2025/06/15/muric-condemns-masquerade-attack-on-mosque-calls-for-justice/).

“The records are there. Internet does not tell lies. Traditionalists have been a main source of concern on the probability of the outbreak of a major religious crisis in Yorubaland. The above internet links prove it.

“We have shown our readiness to support their demand for Isese Day, the onus is on them to pledge to respect the fundamental human rights of others by stopping all their excesses. We advise the Federal Government not to grant their demand for Isese Day until they provide a written commitment on the above serial infringements. Isese Day: to be or not to be? That is the question. The ball is in Isese’s court.”
