IGNORE T. Y. DANJUMAH : MURIC URGES NIGERIANS

7th February, 2019

PRESS RELEASE:

Retired Lt. Gen. TY Danjuma recently warned Nigerians that Islamists must not rule Nigeria again. He accused the Buhari administration of Islamisation of the judiciary and threw his weight behind the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen. The retired general and others spoke on the platform of the Northern Christian Elders Forum (NCEF).

However, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) in a press statement issued on Thursday, 7th February, 2019 has urged Nigerians to ignore the retired general. The statement was signed by its founder and director, Professor Ishaq Akintola. The Islamic human rights organisation described the allegation of Islamisation as baseless, unfounded and mischievous.

“Lt. Gen. Danjuma is trying to mislead Nigerians”. MURIC said. “He is inciting them against Muslim leaders. He and those who joined him in this last journey to nowhere seek to turn Christians and Muslims against each other. We will not allow that. Such a move is self-serving and callous. It is the road to self-destruction. A house divided against itself cannot stand. We urge Nigerians to ignore them.

“Nigerians who are not victims of collective amnesia will recall that the cry of ‘Islamisation’ has always been on the lips of Islamophobics from time immemorial. Yet nobody has been Islamised. They ranted over sukuk bonds until they saw its fruits being used to build roads everywhere, including the South East. Of the 36 ministers in the country, 18 are Christians while 18 are also Muslims. In addition, Christians were given two juicy posts by this Muslim president: the secretary to the Federal Government and the Chief of Staff. Where lies Islamisation agenda? Islamisation or Fulanisation is a mirage, a phantom. It exists only in the imagination of disgruntled elements.

“Nigerians should ask Danjuma and his ilks the following questions. Is it Islamisation to construct the Second Niger Bridge? Is it Fulanisation to refurbish Lagos-Ibadan expressway? How many of the 9.2 million school children who are being fed free by this administration are Fulanis or Muslims? Is the new fast train in Abuja part of the Islamisation? How many Muslims have taken the train without their tickets and how many Christians have been turned back on the basis of their faith? Buhari may be a Muslim but his new roads know no religion. His trains know no religion.

“How can anyone interpret the suspension of a billionaire CJN who possesses 55 houses in Abuja alone as Islamisation? The next qualified person was picked for the post and that is due process. What crime has he committed for being a Muslim? How can that be interpreted as Islamisation? Very soon it will be Islamisation for Nigerian Muslims to get employment. It will be Islamisation if a Muslim eats. It will be Islamisation if the pilot of a plane or the driver of a bus is a Muslim. It is mass profiling and indiscriminate stigmatization of Nigerian Muslims.

“It is the Acting CJN today. It can be any Muslim tomorrow. MURIC will continue to defend Allah-given fundamental rights of Nigerian Muslims with every legitimate means at its disposal. No amount of blackmail, intimidation and name-calling can deter us. Both Muslims and Christians have the right to rule Nigeria because this country is a multi-religious state. We will not stand akimbo and allow some self-acclaimed elders to mislead Nigerians or to blackmail or scare away Muslims who have leadership potentials

“Progressive people around the world are not using religion as a criterion for picking their leaders. They look at industry, antecedence, integrity, competence and morality. This should be the focus of Nigerians. We must free ourselves from the bondage of articulated religiousity. Religion is not about hate, killing and burning. Religion is love. We were human beings before we knew about any religion. So religion is humanity.

“We charge Nigerians to be wary of peddlers of hate. It is not religion. Neither is it ethnicity. We strongly suspect that TY Danjuma is calling for a personal pound of flesh. The tap from which free money has been flowing for so long has been closed by this administration. The Father Christmas mentality of past regimes has given way to prudent management of government’s resources. Oil licenses and blocks are not being renewed.

“No wonder, therefore, that a prominent member of the tiny cabal is venting his spleen on the Buhari regime. The electioneering period has been chosen to drive the point home. But Nigerians should not be deceived. It is neither about religion nor ethnicity. Otherwise why are the candidates of the two leading political parties Muslims and ‘Islamists’? How did this come about in spite of all the noise in the churches that Christians should not vote for Muslim candidates? Why are the candidates of the two major political parties of Fulani extraction despite the outcry in churches that Christians should not vote for any Fulani man?

“The truth is that the capitalist bourgeoisie political class to which the tiny cabal belongs are fidgety. They see themselves as the owners of Nigeria and they are deeply worried that power is gradually shifting to the masses. They are just 1% of the population. But they are so powerful that they control 85% of the total wealth of Nigeria. They control the media and they used to control government until 2015. The 99% who are the masses continue to struggle over the sharing of the remaining 15% of Nigeria’s resources. It cannot go round and this explains why we always fight among ourselves. To make matters worse, people like Danjuma and his NCEF inject the opium in religion and the heroin in ethnicity into the system to add fuel to the conflagration.

“It should be noted that the NCEF has already been disowned by the officially recognized body of Nigerian Christians. NCEF is no more than a concoction and an unknown nomenclature, a pain in the neck even for Christendom and an embarrassment for true and patriotic Christians.

“MURIC advices Nigerians to disregard religious jobbers and spiritual busy bodies looking for a platform to unleash acrobatic religiousity and gymnastic spirituality. NCEF is fanning the embers of religious extremism among Christians. It can only lead to mayhem. This is a group known for fomenting trouble and for crying wolf where there is none. Its stock-in-trade has always been hate speech and incitement.

“Lt. Gen. Danjuma Must learn to live and let live. We remind him that the world is watching. We appeal to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) to call NCEF to order once again. We call the attention of foreign observers, leaders of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union to the inciting statements of Lt. Gen. Danjuma and his cohorts.

CHOPPER CRASH: MURIC REJOICES WITH VP OSINBAJO

5th February, 2019

PRESS RELEASE:
CHOPPER CRASH: MURIC REJOICES WITH VP OSINBAJO

The helicopter of the Nigerian Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, crash-landed in Kogi State on Saturday 2nd February, 2019. Everybody on board alighted safely from the damaged chopper.

In a message congratulating the Vice President on his miraculous escape, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) said the incident proved that Allah loved Nigeria and that the Supreme Creator actually chose the professor for Nigerians. MURIC, an Islamic human rights organization, maintained that there has never been any vice president like Yemi Osinbajo. The statement which was issued on Tuesday 5th February, was signed by the director and founder of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“We warmly felicitate with our Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, for coming out alive and unhurt from the crashed chopper. We just cannot contemplate the huge loss and the gravity of the tragedy if it had been the other way round.

“We affirm that Nigeria cannot afford to lose Osinbajo at this crucial moment. We have never had a vice president like him. Osinbajo is cut for the job. He is the most loyal, most level-headed and most active vice president Nigeria ever had. It is also clear from his handling of issues on all the occasions that he has acted in the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari, that he is not greedy or overambitious. These are some of the reasons MURIC is deeply appreciative to Allah that we did not cry over his dead body on Saturday.

“Besides, Professor Osinbajo is the kind of Christian leader we as Muslims will be comfortable with any time any day. We have seen how he treats Nigerians of different faiths equally. He has freed himself from religious bigotry. He is totally detribalized and his analysis of the Nigerian debacle has often doused tension.

“We urge Nigerians of all creeds and ethnicity to pray for Allah’s continued protection for him and for President Muhammadu Buhari. We assure the vice president that he enjoys tremendous goodwill across the board. We charge him to apply more grease to his elbow. The fact that this is the second time that he will escape death through helicopter crashes indicates that he has a date with history. We pray that he will overwhelm all obstacles in his path in order to fulfill his destiny.

PRESS RELEASE: ONNOGHENGATE: PRESIDENCY NEEDS SOLOMONIC WISDOM

1st February, 2019

ONNOGHENGATE: PRESIDENCY NEEDS SOLOMONIC WISDOM

A 12-man team of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has reportedly met with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo following the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen. The meeting allegedly took place early on Monday, 28th January, 2019 and the subject-matter was how to get a soft landing for the suspended CJN.

Among the options suggested by the team were the following:
1.  CJN to resign or retire without coercion;
2.  Govt to withdraw all charges against Onnoghen.
3.  No molestation of CJN under any guise;
4.  Acting CJN should quit.
5.  NBA team to prevail on relatives, friends to persuade Justice Onnoghen to resign.
6.  Consensus on the need to clean up the Judiciary (long term measure).

Meanwhile the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organization, has accepted option 6 in its entirety. The group also agreed with option 1 with an amendment. It rejected options 2 and 4; described option 3 as superfluous, suggestive and ill-motivated. The group regards option 5 as ridiculous, laughable and unsavoury.

The statement which was issued on Friday evening 1st February, 2019 was signed by the founder and director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

MURIC said, “We accept option number 1 with an amendment. We have always said that the suspended CJN must resign. Retirement is not on the table. But the idea of ‘without coercion’ is outrageous. Who has been coercing the suspended CJN? Who has this administration coerced before? It is obvious that the NBA team came with a mindset and that is not good enough in dialogue. Why should they start with name-calling? Who are they trying to label as a tyrant? That option should be reviewed. Onnoghen should resign not only in the interest of the nation but also to save the judiciary from this monumental embarrassment.

“Option 2 is unacceptable. Why should government withdraw all charges? Now we can see how unnecessary plea-bargaining begins. We usually forget that every celebrated matter like this one, particularly those involving public figures and government officials are always placed first in the court of public opinion. Lawyers may bring technicalities but Nigerians are not fools.

“The man in the street is going to ask for the rationale for dropping charges. The number of criminals will increase because people are angry that a whole CJN allegedly got 55 houses in Abuja city alone with more than N1.1 billion cash in the kitty by robbing with the pen. So why shouldn’t armed robbers rob with the gun? This suggestion brings the contradictions in our society more clearly and rudely to the forefront. It should not be tried because it will create another bad precedent. This is a case in which government has to be firm. How do we create a deterrent for others? We have no doubt that other judges who have the noun ‘thief’ and the verb ‘to steal’ will expect plea bargain championed by the NBA in future?

Option 3 is superfluous, malicious, suggestive and ill-motivated. NBA is asking government not to molest the CJN. It is also implied in option 1. What exactly does NBA mean by molestation? Does the NBA think Nigerians will continue to respect this administration if the Federal Government (FG) announces a national award for the suspended CJN just as some people did in the past? What we know of this regime is that it upholds human dignity, freedom of the press, free speech and the rule of law. What else does NBA want for the suspended billionaire CJN?

“Option 4 is a satanic option. It offends the principle of natural justice. Why should the new acting CJN resign? What offence has he committed? Is it a crime to be a Northerner? NBA should eschew ethnic jingoism. We are not unaware of hate speeches in video clips targeted at the new acting CJN but we do not expect NBA to buy into tribal particularism. We believe in a united Nigeria. We respect and love lawyers but we love Nigeria more. We do not expect less from our lawyers.

“NBA’s satanic option 4 is reminiscent of the story of the two women who brought their case to Prophet Daud (peace be upon him). A wolf had taken one of the children away and there was a dispute concerning whose child was still alive. Prophet Daud declared the older woman as the owner but Prophet Sulayman (peace be upon him) who was the son of Daud and whom Allah gave more wisdom than his father reviewed the judgement.

“He said, ‘Bring me a knife so as to cut the child into two pieces and distribute it between them’. Although the older lady agreed, the younger lady said, `May Allah be merciful to you. Don’t do that, give the child to her, it is hers. Sulayman knew instantly that the younger lady who did not want the child to die was the true owner. So he gave the child to her (Qur’an 38:30 – 34; Sahih Bukhari 1:487; I Kings 3:16 – 28).

“So who deserves the post of CJN between Justice Onnoghen and Justice Muhammed Tanko? Whose child was carried away by the wolf, Onnoghen or Tanko? NBA wants the child cut in two halves! NBA has surprised us with this strange suggestion. Who has a case to answer? Who abused his office? Who is the billionaire CJN? How many days has Tanko spent in office as acting CJN? Is it possible for eminent members of the NBA to also join the camp of haters and wailers? Why are we like this in this country? Who cursed Nigeria?

“We are confounded by option 5. NBA is pledging to ‘prevail’ on relatives, friends will ‘persuade’ Justice Onnoghen to resign. We reject this option. It is infantile, pedestrian and preposterous. NBA is spoon-feeding Onnoghen. What concerns the Nigerian public with ‘relatives’ and ‘friends’ in this matter? So NBA wants a whole Nigeria with 200 million people to start prostrating for a single person? Must we prostrate for a cow because we want to eat beef? Is that it? Should it be so? No, it had better not be. Nigeria is bigger than the suspended CJN. How can such a peripheral issue supplant the tangential?

“We are not surprised though. We are not surprised because NBA has decided long ago that it would ignore the substance and treat the symptom. As far as NBA is concerned, Justice Onnoghen is a saint. He must be idolized. MURIC rejects this stance. It is an attempt to turn Onnoghengate to a comedy. That suggestion should be sent to Nollywood or reserved for the senator who spent 19 hours on treetop. We are being serious here please.

“Option number 6 concerning the need to clean up the judiciary appears to us to make the most sense. Our judiciary stinks and a total overhauling of the system is long overdue. This should be done as soon as possible.

“We appeal to the NBA to call a spade a spade. The body of lawyers should avoid spite and the pull-them-down syndrome. NBA appears to be cutting its nose in order to spite its face. This seems to be what the association is doing by trying to extenuate the offence committed by Justice Onnoghen while demonising Justice Tanko. Is the NBA not biased? Isn’t Justice Tanko also a member of the legal body? How should we judge an association that treats one member as a sacred cow and pushes another onto the rail line when a train is approaching at full speed? It is the most odious and insidious segregation. NBA needs to reassess itself.

“If Nigerians agree that our judiciary needs cleaning up, the man to do it is President Muhammadu Buhari. He has the necessary qualities for the task. The boldness, the determination, the ascetic mien and the incorruptibility are the effective weapons needed for the job and he already possesses them. But we are already in the twilight of his first term in office. Nigerians will definitely need him for a second term particularly to clean the Augean stable.

“As we rise from this intervention, MURIC charges the Federal Government to immediately set in motion the machinery for overhauling the Nigerian judiciary. It is a miscarriage of justice to ask the newly appointed acting CJN to resign. He should continue his work. On the contrary, it is the suspended CJN who should resign honourably now. The Presidency should apply Solomonic wisdom to Onnoghengate by sparing the ‘innocent child’”.

PRESS CONFERENCE ON DENIAL OF HIJAB RIGHTS IN SOUTH WEST NIGERIA ORGANISED BY THE MUSLIM RIGHTS CONCERN (MURIC) ON WORLD HIJAB DAY, 1ST FEBRUARY, 2019 AT MURIC’S NATIONAL HEADQUATERS, IBA, LAGOS STATE.

Friday, 1st February, 2019.

Leaders of Islamic organisations here present,
The Chief Imam of Iba and President, League of Alfas and Imams, Alhaji Imam Habeebullahi Hasan Abanise,
The Chief Imam of Lagos State University, Professor Moshood Taiwo Salisu
The Chairman, LASU Muslim Community, Professor Jamiu Oluwatoki,
Gentlemen of the Press,

As-Salaam Alaykunm wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakaatuhu

I welcome you all to this Press Conference on Hijab Crisis in the South West. Let me begin by calling your attention to the significance of our choice of today to hold this event. Today, Friday 1st February, 2019 is being observed as WORLD HIJAB DAY. Many events are taking place simultaneously in several places in Nigeria and other countries of the world to mark the event. This is why we have picked today to address this press conference.

HIJAB CRISIS IN SOUTH WEST SCHOOLS:
You are all aware of the proliferation of hijab crises in several schools around the South West. About nine (9) female Muslim Students were locked out of their schools’ gates at the University of Ibadan International School (UIS) because they used hijab. Fifty-five (55) students were locked out of their schools’ gates at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) International School, Ogbomoso, for the same reason.
Some of these infringements have been taken to court. Examples are those of UIS and Abeokuta where nine-year-old Aisha AbdulAleem of Gateway Secondary School, Abeokuta, went to court to enforce her Allah-given fundamental human rights because she was disallowed from using hijab in the school.
An interesting development is the overbearing involvement of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in these cases. In the UIS case, CAN came in under the guise of the Christian parents in the school. They sought to be joined in the case. CAN did not disguise its identity in the Abeokuta case and it mobilized many Christians who attended court during each hearing. The atmosphere became so charged that the court authorities had to disallow both Muslim and Christian supporters from entering the court at the last hearing on Wednesday 23rd January, 2019.
Even the traditionalists sought to be joined in the case. They appeared under the aegis of Traditional Healers Association. We have no doubt, however, that the traditionalist angle is still part of CAN’s manipulation.
We hereby raise serious objection to the intervention of CAN in hijab cases because the matter is for Muslims and it has nothing to do with Christians. They have not complained about the existing school uniform because it suits them. It is the Muslims who are complaining because it does not conform with the rules of Islam.
The current school uniform was designed by the British colonial masters before independence. That uniform was designed to suit Christians because the colonialists were Christians. Nigerian authorities should have reviewed it after independence but they failed to do so. Muslims are seeking to use their own because it is not suitable for female Muslim students as it contravenes Islamic dress code for females. Schools where Muslim girls are not allowed to use hijab are therefore forcing Muslim students to use Christian uniform.
This attitude is neo-colonial, neo-imperial, oppressive, undemocratic, archaic and tyrannical. It is an infringement on Section 38 (i) & (ii) which stipulates that “every person shall be entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion, including freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom (either alone or in community with others, and in public or in private) to manifest and propagate his religion or belief in worship, teaching, practice and observance’’
It is disheartening that although Muslims in the South West choose peaceful conduct instead of resorting to violence, our Christian neighbours still will not let us be. There is no doubt that Muslims who go to court over the violation of their hijab rights are taking the civilized and peaceful option. But Christians in Yorubaland under the aegis of CAN still seek to frustrate them by joining the cases in the court. But here is the paradox, the confusion. Did the Muslims take CAN to court? Did they take Christians to court? The answer is capital NO. The Muslims sued the school authorities or the state government. What, then, is CAN’s problem in the South West? CAN’s attitude symbolizes acrobatic religiousity.
A good example is the Osun hijab imbroglio which occurred about four years ago. The Muslims took the state government to court and won the case. The state government therefore allowed the female Muslim students to use hijab but the Osun chapter of CAN went haywire. The leaders instructed Christian students to wear church garments to school instead of their normal school uniforms just to create confusion. So they came in white robes, celestial garments and church choir dresses. They also incited traditionalists to appear in masquerade gears to school!

But a church garment is for church affairs only. It is an aberration to wear it to school. It is an anomaly to wear it when visiting a friend. Which parent will send his son or daughter to the market while dressed as a masquerade? That is the ridiculous, insipid and pedestrian level that gymnastic spirituality and articulated neo-imperialism has driven CAN to in Yorubaland. That is why they are contesting every court case on hijab with Muslims.
Meanwhile MURIC is keenly watching the court proceedings in the ongoing hijab cases in Ibadan and Abeokuta. We warn the Oyo and Ogun chapters of CAN not to make any attempt at perverting the course of justice. We know what they are capable of doing. We have no doubt that the current travails of the high and powerful in the judiciary is enough to send a strong message to the courts handling the hijab cases.
LAGOS SCHOOLS DISALLOWING USE OF HIJAB:
Despite the fact that the constitution is on our side and some state governments have actually issued positive directives, some recalcitrant and fanatical Christian school principals are still frustrating our efforts. Lagos State is an example. The Court of Appeal gave victory to Muslims but the state government appealed to the Supreme Court. An attempt to secure stay of action was turned down. Yet the state government did not allow the use of hijab until late in November 2019.

To date many Christian principals and teachers refuse to allow hijab in their schools. Unfortunately the state government has not mustered the political will to walk its talk. They should have made scape goats of those who disregard their circular on hijab but nothing has been done till now. Even outside the school premises, Christian teachers beat up our daughters for using the same hijab legalised by a court pronouncement and approved by the government.
WAEC REGISTRATION AND ‘CAPTURING’:
You are also not unaware of recent ugly developments in the ongoing registration exercise for the West African Examination Council (WAEC). Some school authorities ask female Muslim students to remove their hijabs before their pictures are taken. This is absolutely illegal, unlawful and unconstitutional. We have reports about such schools and we are certain that WAEC did not issue such instruction.
Some schools where this obnoxious practice is going on have been reported to us. Among them are Adeolu Senior Secondary School, Oluwa Memorial Senior Secondary School, Ajeromi Ifelodun Senior High School, Ojoku Senior Secondary School, Cardoso Juniopr High School. Lagos State Government Secondary School, Ijanikin, Ajangbadi Senior High School, Oto-Awori Senior Grammar School and Iba Housing Estate Senior Secondary School.
The case of Iba Housing Estate Senior Secondary School is didactic because MURIC’s Hijab Task Force (HITAF) personally led by the director caught the school red handed on Wednesday 16th January, 2019 as they were tormenting female Muslim students. The official in charge of the ‘capturing’ exercise told us point blank that the instruction was from WAEC. We challenged him to call WAEC office because WAEC has consistently denied involvement in making Muslim students remove their hijab. He made the phone call to his phony contact and later told us that ‘WAEC’ had agreed that the Muslim girls could use hijab. We have a video clip of this hypocritical and malicious encounter.
This incident made us realise that there is a conspiracy against Muslims of the South West. Those behind the plot are determined to frustrate Muslims in the region in their effort to emancipate the Muslim girl child from the shackles of neo-imperialism. It is religious profiling, systematic stigmatization and methodical apartheid. It is a crime against humanity.
That incident alone made us realise that we must change our strategy. It is time to mobilise Yoruba Muslims, particularly the nonchalant parents to get involved in the struggle to liberate the Muslim girl-child.
What is MURIC's plan?

We have seen that the solution lies in the hands of Muslims themselves. Allah said He would not change the condition of a people until they change their ways (Qur'an 13 :11). Yoruba Muslims have been lackadaisical. They care very little about what happens to their children particularly in the schools.

Yoruba Muslims have forgotten that freedom is never given on a platter of gold. They forgot how Prophet Muhammad (SAW) struggled before his followers could enjoy freedom. They have failed to learn from the travails of Nelson Mandela, Thomas Sankara, Steve Biko, Martin Luther King, Ken Saro Wiwa, Gani Fawehinmi, etc who had to fight for the freedom of their people before they enjoyed it.

MURIC seizes the opportunity of this press conference to appeal to Muslims in all states in Yorubaland to organize themselves for peaceful resistance. They must stand up for their rights. We do not mean any violent struggle but peaceful protests and occupations. Nobody will fight for us except ourselves. We must emancipate ourselves from neo-colonial slavery.

The courts have made favourable pronouncements, yet school authorities refuse to obey. The state governments have approved hijab, yet fanatical principals and teachers are still persecuting our daughters. Enough is enough. Government and the security agents will not do anything until we Muslims exhibit the political will to liberate ourselves. It is time for action. It is time for determined yet peaceful activism. We are ready for a long struggle and we are certain that victory is ours in the end because our cause is just. We have been pushed to the wall.

Every mosque and every Islamic organization in Yorubaland must set up an 'Hijab Task Force' (HITAF) to be pronounced 'high taf'. The role of HITAF is to monitor all schools (public and private) and prepare for quick response wherever female Muslim students are being harassed. MURIC in conjunction with other willing Islamic organizations will set up a control room to be called 'Hijab Control Room' (HICOR)

There will be an hijab task force in every mosque, every local government and every state in Yorubaland. We will not rest until freedom is achieved. We are taking this step because the hijab crisis is expanding everyday. Our oppressors have become emboldened by our docility. Yoruba Muslims are too silent and things are likely to get worse if nothing is done to stop it.

Great Nigerian Muslims! We are involving you in order to take the struggle to the grassroots and to create greater awareness. We receive too many complaints everyday. We have therefore decided to decentralise.

Every Muslim must know his Allah-given fundamental human rights. Nobody can take these civil liberties from you. Speak out against oppression. Protect yourself, your wife, your mother and your daughter from persecution. Unless you do this, our oppressors will soon be removing hijab from their heads inside commercial vehicles, on the streets and in other public places. To be forewarned is to be forearmed.

This is a quiet revolution. MURIC is determined to change this e fi won le mentality, a docile mindset of the present generation of Yoruba Muslims. We must become an active and enlightened set of people. Every Yoruba Muslim must be involved.

All members of hijab task forces must therefore be peaceful and orderly. You are ambassadors of Islam. Instead of using force or becoming violent, HITAF should beat bandiri drums and sing waka songs. Muslim women also have the chance of joining HITAF. They will be useful in rendering Asalatu songs with their melodious voices.

HITAF is expected to go to schools in their neighbourhood where hijab is illegally disallowed. Without necessarily resorting to violence, parents in conjunction with their Muslim communities must find ways of deterring teachers who beat or punish their daughters for using hijab such that it is not repeated again. Such methods may include Islamic means but not excluding resort to legal mechanism by inviting security agencies where necessary.
Our young daughters look up to us for protection and guidance and as such we have a duty in loco parentis to rally behind them. We cannot afford to fail them. They are most likely to blame us for abandoning them in time of need if we fail to rise now before it is too late. Failure to support them now may result in the girls losing hope and abandoning their parents’ faith.
In view of the fact that school principals and teachers are disobeying government’s directives, flouting the constitution and illegally punishing Muslim students and depriving them of their Allah-given fundamental human rights, Yoruba Muslims are left with no choice than to protect their daughters.
Those who make laws difficult to obey make it impossible for people not to disobey. In the same manner, those who give illegal and Satanic instructions to Muslim children in schools make it impossible for the students not to disobey. This is why Nelson Mandela said, “When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes a duty”.
The silence of civil society is worrisome but we are not surprised. Western-oriented human rights organisations have never shown any interest in the plight of Muslims. It is as if Muslims are not considered human beings by them. But they forget that this was the same parochial and myopic view held by the apartheid South African regime and it collapsed when the blacks united against it. So will the oppressors of Muslims be defeated if the Muslims can rise to the occasion.
This is why every Muslim must be a revolutionary. A Muslim who is docile in the face of persecution is living in a state of manzilatun bayn al-manzilatayn (i.e. though he is still a Muslim but he has failed to stand up for justice as enjoined in Qur’an 16:90 or to follow the example of Prophet Muhammad as the latter declared in his hadith: “Whoever sees evil should change it with his hands…” man raa minkunm munkaran...
We hereby declare 2019 the Year of Hijab Rights in Nigeria.

ONNOGHENGATE: BUHARI MUST APPLY DOCTRINE OF NECESSITY

29th January, 2019

PRESS RELEASE:
ONNOGHENGATE:
BUHARI MUST APPLY DOCTRINE OF NECESSITY

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has suggested that President Muhammadu Buhari may have to apply the doctrine of necessity in order to steer the Nigerian ship safely through the stormy waters of judicial gridlock. The Islamic human rights group made the suggestion in a press statement issued late on Tuesday 29th January, 2019. The statement was signed by its director and founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

This was sequel to the outcome of Tuesday’s meeting of the National Judicial Council (NJC). The Council gave seven days to both Justice Walter Onnoghen (the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria) and the Ag. CJN, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed, to respond to petitions raised against them. NJC elected Justice Umaru Abdullahi to preside over the meeting held today, Tuesday, 29th January, 2019. The petition against Justice Onnoghen came from a non-governmental organization (NGO) while that of Justice Tanko Muhammed originated from Mr. Olisa Agbakoba, SAN and another NGO.

“From the look of things and in view of the fact that Nigeria is approaching a general election, we believe that the best thing President Buhari should do now is to apply the doctrine of necessity as applicable at every development before, during and immediately after the elections. This is in order to save the nation from constitutional crisis.

“To be candid, we are constrained to express reservations on the ability of the NJC to remain absolutely neutral in the issues being examined. Our fear arises from the composition of the NJC. About 60% of the membership are appointees of the CJN and the same CJN is being investigated. How can they assure Nigerians of their neutrality? Any CJN at any point in time wields too much judicial power in the present council as constituted. Government should therefore review its composition as soon as possible.

“The alacrity with which the two petitions against the Acting CJN were entertained raises our suspicion as there appears to have been a predetermined position not to allow him to preside over today’s meeting.

“There is every reason to be wary of certain sections of our national institutions. Senator Bukola Saraki claimed that Senate met and resolved to approach the Supreme Court on this same Onnoghengate but this has been debunked by other members of Senate.

“In view of the prevailing circumstances and in the interest of the nation, we strongly advise President Buhari to resort to the doctrine of necessity. The nation must not be allowed to grind to a halt. The chief executive will know how best to apply this doctrine but there is no doubt that it has become necessary.

“We know that all these crises arose because certain elements within the judiciary and among the politicians are diametrically opposed to the war against corruption. Interestingly, Transparency International (TI) just issued a fresh positive statement today about Nigeria. According to TI, Nigeria’s Corruption Perception Index (CPI) for 2018 has improved by four places. The country is therefore ranked 144 out of 180 countries that were surveyed in 2018. We commend President Muhammadu Buhari for this achievement.

“This should be good news to Nigeria, ceteris paribus, but here we are with prominent members of other arms of government constituting themselves into cogs in the wheel of progress in the anti-corruption war. It further goes to cement our suggestion that conventional methods may not give the government the much desired progress in its war against corruption. At the risk of sounding hostile to the principle of the separation of powers, we assert that nobody challenges the status quo with bare knuckles. Necessity may have to compel government to move at unusual speed.

In conclusion, we express strong reservations at the composition of the NJC and the speed with which the Acting CJN was served with petitions. We suggest very strongly in the interest of Nigeria that Mr. President adopts the doctrine of necessity from this moment until there is palpable stability. We also recommend very strongly that the composition of the NJC should be reviewed in such a way that the power of the CJN is reduced to a minimum.

DON’T INSTITUTIONALISE CORRUPTION: MURIC TELLS NBA

28th January, 2019

PRESS RELEASE:
DON’T INSTITUTIONALISE CORRUPTION: MURIC TELLS NBA

Members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) today resolved to embark on a two-day warning boycott of courts in protest against the suspension of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen. The ex-CJN was suspended from office last week by President Muhammadu Buhari on allegations bordering on graft. However, NBA rejected the suspension claiming it did not follow due process.

The two-day warning boycott will begin tomorrow Tuesday, 29th January, 2019 and will continue on Wednesday, 30th January, 2019. The NBA announced its decision at the end of its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja. Reacting to the boycott, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) advised the NBA not to institutionalise corruption. The Islamic human rights organization told members of the legal profession to avoid taking sides with a man who has already admitted that he committed an offence.

“This boycott is sheer hocus pocus. It is poor Nigerians who will suffer from the NBA’s boycott. They have allowed their emotions to run away with them. The problem with our lawyers is that they see every problem, including political, as a legal problem. They do not look at other angles or think of other possibilities and solutions. They tend to corroborate an African proverb which says, ‘If the only tool you have is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail.’

“We are talking about a man who sat at the helm of our judiciary here. This man has admitted that he ‘forgot’ more than a billion naira in his bank account. That, to us, is preposterous. It is alarming. Unfortunately those who know better because they are ‘learned’ are the same people staging a boycott to protect the billionaire Justice.

“Why can’t it happen here if it can happen elsewhere. Just last year, on June 20, 2018 to be precise, a judge of the Supreme Court in West Virginia, United States of America, Justice Allen Loughry who was accused of using his office for personal gains was suspended. His offence involved $363,000 worth of office furniture, having expensive office furniture taken to his private house and using government vehicle and gas card for personal use.

“That happened in a sane society They have lawyers there too and his colleagues did not identify with the wrongdoer. So we need to ask ourselves if we truly want to sanitise this society. Perhaps it was this kind of sentiment that made Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, to conclude that, ‘To fight corruption in a corrupt system, you don’t follow due process, you follow the necessary process.” Vladimir Putin

“We are tempted to ask, ‘Where is the human face in the practice of law in Nigeria? We know the thief. He confesses to us. But we are the same people who will tutor the thief to change his confessional statement. We tell him to claim it was made under duress. We are the same people who appear for the Evans and the Oyenusis yet we go to the mosque on Fridays and attend church on Sundays. Do you think God is blind?

“MURIC appeals to the NBA to put humanity on the front burner in matters like this. NBA should not wish away Justice Onnoghen’s offence. It should be Nigeria first. No single person is bigger than Nigeria. Crimes like the one the ex-CJN is accused of are what turned this country into a wild jungle and NBA must join other patriotic citizens who are presently working day and night to return Nigeria to the comity of sane communities.

“We further appeal that the NBA creates an enabling environment for ordinary Nigerians to have access to justice. We should not be seen protecting the rich and powerful all the time, particularly a powerful man who has already admitted that he is the owner of incriminatingly humongous bank accounts when poor Nigerians are sentenced to long terms in prison just for stealing one tuber of yam. Ayn Rand has a strong message here, ‘When the law no longer protects you from the corrupt, but protects the corrupt from you, you know your nation is doomed’.

“It was the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who said, ‘Any wealth accumulated on a selfish basis, at the expense of the state in defiance of social justice helps to create a disorganized society in which everybody will eat everybody, and no one person can be safe.’ Do the respected members of the NBA want to support the creation of such a chaotic society?

“MURIC has taken the ex-CJN to the court of public opinion and he lost woefully. Nigerians are flabbergasted that the ex-CJN has N1,131,684,554.00 (one billion, one hundred and thirty-one million, six hundred and eighty-four thousand, five hundred and fifty-four naira) in his personal accounts and still counting. It is appalling, repugnant and nauseating.

“We advise NBA not to pursue vested interest. Nigerians see the Onnoghen affair as a struggle between those who fight corruption, those who despise it, those who embrace it and those who benefit from it. If NBA will not stand up to be counted among those in the first group, it must not be seen to identify with the third and fourth camps. The second rank is a safer ground for the purpose of posterity.

“We appeal to the NBA not to resume its boycott of courts soon after the two days. This is because it is poor Nigerians who suffer each time there is a boycott of courts. The legal profession is sine qua non to the dispensation of justice anywhere in the world and that is why lawyers are respected by all.

“Resumption of boycott is unnecessary because Justice Onnoghen himself in a separate case in 2013 acknowledged the special powers of the CCT. In the case of AHMED V AHMED & ORS (2013) LPELR – 21143 (SC) delivered on 12th July, 2013, the ex-CJN held that, ‘The CCT has exclusive jurisdiction to deal with all violations contravening any of the provisions of the Code of Conduct Bureau’ and that ‘the provisions expressly ousted the powers of ordinary regular courts in respect of such violations’. He further concluded that ‘Any allegation that a public officer has committed a breach of or has not complied with the provisions of this Code shall be made to the Code of Conduct Bureau’.

“As we rise from this session, we remind honourable members of the NBA that law is a noble profession and a good number of our lawyers, both senior and junior ones, are men and women of integrity. This profession is for the bold, the assertive and the man of decency and candour. We advise NBA to think outside the box. Onnoghen appears to have dragged its name in the mud. What NBA should do to reclaim its good name is to step aside and allow the ex-CJN to defend himself at the tribunal.
