NIGERIAN MUSLIMS ARE WAITING FOR THE FIRST LADY’S PALLIATIVES – MURIC

31st May, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

NIGERIAN MUSLIMS ARE WAITING FOR THE FIRST LADY’S PALLIATIVES – MURIC

The First Lady of Nigeria and National Chairman of Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday gave the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria, YOWICA, 7 Hybrid 14-seater buses. Meanwhile an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has urged the First Lady to include Nigerian Muslims also when giving and sharing.

This was contained in a press statement issued on Saturday, 31st May, 2025 by the Executive Director of the group, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“The First Lady of Nigeria and National Chairman of Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), Senator Oluremi Tinubu, yesterday gave the Youth Wing of the Christian Association of Nigeria (YOWICA), 7 Hybrid 14-seater buses at the State House, Abuja (https://alimoshotv.com/index.php/2025/05/30/empowering-faith-in-action-first-lady-oluremi-tinubu-gifts-7-hybrid-buses-to-can-youth-wing/).

“While we congratulate YOWICA on the occasion of the presentation, we urge the First Lady to include Nigerian Muslims also when giving and sharing. The First Lady is the mother of the nation. There is no doubt that she is the mother of both Christians and Muslims. It is therefore expected that she would extend her milk of kindness to the Muslims as well.

“She has been very generous to the Christian groups and this is commendable. She donated 22,800 bags of rice to Christians in the 19 northern states as palliatives for Christmas and the New Year in December 2024 (https://fmino.gov.ng/first-lady-donates-22800-bags-of-rice-n95m-to-northern-states-christians/). Yet these are just a few of her several donations.

“Although her palliatives did not reach Muslims in Ramadan, MURIC has assured Muslim communities across the country that there is no need for any form of disquiet. The Mother of the Nation has a large heart.

“Palliatives and hybrid buses for Muslims are on the way from the same Mother of the Nation. We have every reason to believe that we will not be disappointed because the Tinubu family has always been a giving and caring family long before they occupied the Villa.”

AMNESTY INT REPORT ON NIGERIA JAUNDICED – MURIC

30th May, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

AMNESTY INT REPORT ON NIGERIA JAUNDICED – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the latest report of Amnesty International on Nigeria. The Islamic human rights group described the report as jaundiced, lacking substance, balance and objectivity. MURIC accused Amnesty International of ignoring all the achievements and victories of the Nigerian security agencies while it concentrated on the killings and other atrocities with the aim of demarketing Nigeria.

The faith-based non-governmental organization spoke on Friday, 30th May, 2025 via a press release signed by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

Full details:

“In a report released yesterday, 29th May, 2025, Amnesty International gave horrid details of killings and kidnappings in Nigeria. The report, to our minds, looks more like an hatchet job for fifth columnists or foreign enemies of Nigeria than a constructive criticism and balanced report expected of an organization of international repute like Amnesty International.

“A damning report about Nigeria must generate attention among its citizens particularly because it has the capacity to determine their rating among the comity of nations and consequently their future welfare.

“This is where a group like ours operating within the country finds it mandatory to speak up even when we are not the best of friends with the current administration. But we must not allow our displeasure which arose from the administration’s stylish marginalization of Muslims in political appointments becloud our sense of objectivity.

“We assert that Amnesty International’s report went haywire. It was too biased and heavily jaundiced. All it reported were the violent killings and kidnappings by terrorists without giving recognition to the gallant efforts of men of the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Police in curbing the insurgency and criminalities. This is the lacuna we intend to fill.

“The achievements of the Nigerian security agencies in battling insurgents and criminals are so many that all the details cannot be given in this short space. For example, troops of 177 Guards Battalion in conjunction with troops of Operation Whirl Stroke and the Civilian Joint Task Force in Nassarawa State rescued no fewer than 30 abducted civilians on 14th January, 2023. The victims were rescued after gun duels between troops and terrorists in Nassa, FCT, and Kogi state. (https://punchng.com/soldiers-rescue-30-kidnapped-victims-kill-terrorists/).

“The combined offensives by the military against terrorists and other criminal elements across the country in February 2025 resulted in the rescue of 320 kidnapped victims while 221 terrorists were killed. Troops recently killed 213 terrorists in the Northern part of the country and arrested 216 criminals across the country. (https://worldstagenews.com/nigeria-military-frowns-at-late-report-of-kidnapping-incidents/).

“The Nigerian military achieved significant success in counter-terrorism operations during the first quarter of 2024. The military reported killing 2,352 terrorists, arresting 2,308 individuals, and rescuing 1,241 kidnapped hostages in various operations across the nation. Additionally, several terrorist commanders were eliminated during these operations (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJ-h49-2-ZI).

“In February 2025 alone, troops arrested a total of 674 terrorists, bandits, kidnappers as well as perpetrators of oil theft while recovering various assorted weapons and ammunition, including 146 AK-47 rifles, 87 fabricated rifles, 36 assorted Dane guns and 6140 assorted ammunition (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/02/troops-rescue-320-kidnapped-victims-kill-221-terrorists-in-february/)

“Just before going to press today, the army command announced the killing of 60 terrorists in gun battle. The terrorists were neutralized by troops of Operation Hadin Kai of the Nigerian Army today, Friday, 30th May, 2025. The land and air operation took place in Bita, Borno State in the early hours of Friday (https://dailypost.ng/2025/05/30/military-kills-over-60-terrorists-in-gun-battle/).

“These and many other achievements took place under the Tinubu administration but were not included in the hatchet report of Amnesty International. The Nigerian Army also announced four days ago that it is currently re-strategising to meet changing situations in the battlefield (https://dailypost.ng/2025/05/28/nigerian-military-restrategises-against-insurgency-in-borno/).

“Apart from the victories being achieved by Nigerian troops against the insurgents, the Nigerian Police and other security agencies have made their marks in the war against terrorists and criminals.

In 2024, the Nigeria Police Force recorded major successes in tackling crime, leading to the arrest of 30,313 suspects for various heinous offences, the recovery of 1,984 assorted firearms, 23,250 rounds of ammunition of varying calibres, and the rescue of 1,581 kidnapped victims (https://dailytrust.com/over-30000-suspected-criminals-arrested-in-2024-igp/).

“On 28th November, 2024, police operatives attached to the Borno State Command repelled a group of armed and dreaded terrorists who attacked the Jakana Divisional Police Headquarters, Borno State. The group was met with strong resistance fro m gallant operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, who successfully repelled the attack and left many of the attackers with varying degrees of bullet wounds, while one police officer was injured (https://npf.gov.ng/news/details/531).

“The Nigeria Police has also carried out several successful rescue operations among which was the rescue of 28 kidnap victims in Enugu State where 10 suspects were arrested (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/795627-police-rescue-28-kidnap-victims-arrest-10-suspects.html).

“Unfortunately, however, Amnesty International buried the heroic acts of Nigerian soldiers and policemen mentioned above with many others under its demarketing sentiment. Amnesty was merely interested in painting Nigeria as a constant battleground, a mafia nation of gangsterism and a blood thirsty land of wild people.

“Amnesty International ignored all the achievements and victories of the Nigerian security agencies while it concentrated on the killings and other atrocities with the aim of demarketing Nigeria. Amnesty International’s report lacks balance. It has only succeeded in massaging the ego of the terrorists. It is long in tautology, short in critical analysis.”

2027: MUSLIMS WILL NOT VOTE FOR MAKINDE – MURIC

29th May, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

2027: MUSLIMS WILL NOT VOTE FOR MAKINDE – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has declared that Muslims would not vote for the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, in the 2027 presidential election. The group therefore advised political parties to avoid picking the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, as their presidential candidate. The group accused Makinde of targeting Muslim places of worship for demolition, conversion into fun grounds and naming them after himself.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday, 29th May, 2027 by the Executive Director of the Islamic human rights organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“Political activities have started again as the 2027 general elections approach. Interested candidates for various positions have started identifying themselves while support groups are springing up.

“However, we note with deep concern that one of these support groups has solicited for the nomination of the governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, as the presidential candidate of a major opposition party in the 2027 presidential election. (https://www.vanguardngr.com/2025/05/2027-s-west-pdp-must-ensure-makinde-gets-partys-presidential-ticket-support-group/).

“While we are not allergic to having accommodating, tolerant and generally moderate Christian candidates coming up for any position, MURIC will like to affirm that Nigerian Muslims North and South will not vote for Makinde. This is because he has openly and arrogantly displayed himself as an anti-Muslim leader. Political parties are therefore advised not to dissipate energy on him.

“The sins of Makinde against Muslims of Oyo State in particular and Nigerian Muslims in general, are many. We warned him at the time but he was power drunk. Despite several appeals, Governor Seyi Makinde demolished Adogba Central Mosque, Iwo Road, in the year 2020. He renamed the mosque after himself when it was rebuilt in 2023 (https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/587297-muric-kicks-as-rebuilt-central-mosque-is-renamed-after-makinde.html?tztc=1)

“Olore Central Mosque came under demolition threat. He seized the only praying ground used by Muslims in Bodija (Bodija Muslim Praying Ground) and turned it into a recreation centre (https://dailypost.ng/2021/07/17/islamic-group-slams-gov-makinde-for-allegedly-converting-bodija-praying-ground-to-recreation-centre/).

“Under Makinde’s watch, Muslim children in schools were forced to attend Christian evangelical revivals addressed by foreign pastors. Muslim students were forced to sing Christmas carol (https://newtelegraphng.com/muric-cautions-oyo-gov-on-alleged-forcing-muslim-students-teachers-to-sing-christmas-carol/).

“Makinde removed his deputy governor, Rauf Olaniyan, who was a committed Muslim because he saw the latter as a threat to his Christianisation agenda in the state. He also pursued a deliberate policy of replacing Muslim traditional rulers with Christians by rejecting Muslim nominees in Oyo, Ogbomosho, etc.

“This governor appointed six chairmen of governing boards but only one of them is a Muslim. He appointed 34 board members, but only 15 are Muslims. He also appointed 10 Christians as commissioners and gave Muslims 6 only (https://blueprint.ng/makinde-running-christianisation-agenda-muric-alleges/).

“If given the keys of Aso Rock, Makinde will find some excuse to demolish the National Mosque, rebuild it and name it after himself. He is bad news for Muslims. While we do not write off a Christian as president, a viciously intolerant Christian is the last occupant we need at the villa. Any political party that fields Seyi Makinde as a presidential candidate is dead on arrival.”

DON'T ALLOW EXAMS TO CLASH WITH SALAH – MURIC

27th May, 2025

DON'T ALLOW EXAMS TO CLASH WITH SALAH – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has advised authorities of educational institutions all over the country to avoid slating their examinations for the Salah period. The group alleged that some tertiary institutions are in the habit of ignoring public holidays and scheduling examinations during Muslim festivals. MURIC described such practice as insensitive, repressive and provocative.

This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, 27th May, 2025 by the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

"It has come to our knowledge that some tertiary institutions are in the habit of ignoring public holidays and scheduling examinations to coincide with Muslim festivals. This is aimed at causing Muslim staff and students as much discomfort as possible. This, without doubt, is insensitive, repressive and provocative.

"Such developments are capable of igniting tension in tertiary institutions at a time when the country needs peace for its various development programs.

"For instance, reports reaching MURIC says that in the last two weeks, the management of some Federal tertiary institutions caused uproars when they fixed their examinations on Salah day or a day before. Fortunately some of them have reviewed their timetables by postponing examinations till after the Salah. This is commendable.

"Internationally recognized festivals for which the Federal Government always declares holidays should be respected at all times. Anything to the contrary is not only insensitive, repressive and provocative, it is also illegal, illegitimate, unlawful and unconstitutional.

As Salah is expected to fall on Friday 7th or Saturday 8th June, 2025, tertiary institutions are implored to avoid clashes between their examinations and the Salah period. We advise a gap of at least two or three days between Salah and examinations in tertiary institutions.

"MURIC appeals to the authorities of all tertiary institutions in Nigeria for cooperation in the interest of peace and harmony, not only on the campuses but in the country as a whole.  Anything to the contrary will be deemed confrontational and it is not in the best interest of the institution. Dialogue, consultation and inclusiveness are an integral part of academic culture.

"Any examination fixed against Salah day will be seen as a calculated attempt to oppress Muslim students and staff on campus. By the way, can such institutions slate their semester examinations for 24th, 25th and 26th December when Christmas bells are ringing and its carols rent the air?

"Any likely clash between examinations and Salah period can be easily detected and adjusted if global best practice is followed. Examination timetables are usually tabled before the Committee of Deans and the University Senate for consideration. Apart from these two respected academic bodies, the various unions on campus may be consulted before decisions are taken on sensitive issues like this in order to satisfy all righteousness.

"In future, we will have no option than to report the authorities of any tertiary institution, whether federal or state, that refused to respect public holidays, (particularly those declared for Islamic festivals) to the relevant ministry of education and the National Universities Commission (NUC). To be forewarned is to be forearmed."

NBAIS: STOP ANTI-ARABIC, ANTI-MUSLIM PARANOIA – MURIC

25th May, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

NBAIS: STOP ANTI-ARABIC, ANTI-MUSLIM PARANOIA – MURIC

The National Prayer Altar (TNPA) last week called on the Nigerian government to reverse its ratification of the policy which equates certificates issued by the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) with WAEC, NECO, NBTE and other standardised examination bodies. TNPA said such equation distorts Nigeria’s secularity.

In the meantime, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has confirmed the compatibility of the NBAIS certificate with WAEC, NECO, NBTE. The Islamic organization advised the Christian group and Nigerian Christendom to eschew all vestiges of colonial mentality as well as anti-Arabic and anti-Muslim paranoia.

The statement reads:

“The National Prayer Altar (TNPA), a coalition of Christians in Nigeria, last week called on the Nigerian government to reverse its ratification of the policy which equates certificates issued by the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) with WAEC, NECO, NBTE and other standardised examination bodies. TNPA said such equation distorts Nigeria’s secularity (https://newsexpressngr.com/news/261434/christians-kick-against-move-to-make-arabic-certificate-equal-with-waec-neco-nbte).

“We take TNPA’s position on NBAIS with a pinch of salt. Its attempt to subjugate Arabic and Islamic education to an inconsequential level is a true reflection of its colonial mentality. The British Christian colonial masters did worse to Islamic education and its judicial system during their decades of pillage, distortion and deprivation.

“But the wind has blown. We have seen the ruff of the hen. Gone are those days when atrocities committed against Nigerian Muslims go unchallenged. The chicken has come home to roost. The selfish agenda of the Christian colonialists of giving everything to Christians and nothing to the Muslims has been exposed.

“It is this same selfish agenda that TNPA and some Christian groups and individuals wish to continue. We advise our Christian neighbours to eschew all vestiges of anti-Arabic and anti-Muslim paranoia.

“Paranoia anywhere is a psychotic disorder characterized by delusions of persecution. In other words it is extreme and irrational distrust of others. It destroys friendship, love, trust and all positive human values. In its place, it breeds hatred and generates disunity. It is the last thing Nigeria needs at this material time.

“Fueled by sermons of animosity and hate speeches, the same paranoia was responsible for heating up the polity when Nigerian Christians were misled to oppose Shari’ah, Islamic banking, Nigeria’s membership of the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC), Arabic on naira, etc.

“Although Nigerian Muslims have Allah-given fundamental human rights to engage in all the above even as low-hanging dividends of democracy, Nigerian Christians, misled by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), vehemently opposed the moves and even went to court over some of them.

“The fact that CAN lost eventually in all the contested matters is highly didactic but the latest heightening of tension over Arabic and Islamic education reflects the fact that no lesson has been learnt. It also reveals the depth of anti-Muslim paranoia among Nigerian Christians.

“Why is there so much fear among Nigerian Christians? Why is hatred of anything Islamic so deeply ingrained? Christians have institutionalized the tortuous and tyrannical policy of weaponizing education in order to perpetuate the socio-economic repression of Nigerian Muslims. Their desire is to permanently keep the Muslims in the back seat in all spheres of life.

“NBAIS should not be targeted for elimination by Nigerian Christians because it has come a long way while due process has been followed and all righteousness fulfilled. Its historical background confirms this.

“It was first established in 1960 mainly for Northern Nigeria as the Board of Arabic and Islamic Studies (BAIS). The board was transferred to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in 1967 as a result of creation of states. After 40 years, the board became national and was recognised by the Federal Ministry of Education as an examination board. That was in 2011.

“Therefore, it became equivalent to WAEC and NECO, with its headquarters in Kaduna. It achieved autonomy like WAEC and NECO in 2017 and its certificate was recognized worldwide. Today, at least 26 states in Nigeria write NBAIS examination in more than 1,200 affiliated schools spread across the country.

“We urge TNPA and Nigerian Christians in general to stop misleading Nigerians on the constitutional status of the country. We affirm clearly, unambiguously and unequivocally that Nigeria is not a secular country but a multi-religious country which recognizes the equality of all religious groups.

“We challenge TNPA to show Nigerians the word ‘secular’ in the Nigerian Constitution. TNPA must show us the chapter and section of the constitution in which the word ‘secular’ is mentioned. Secularism in Nigeria is a sham, a mirage. It does not exist.

“It follows, therefore, that TNPA’s case against NBAIS certificate melts away like ice cream under the desert burning sun for basing its case on the assumed and perceived secularity of Nigeria. Since the secularity of Nigeria is a wrong assumption, thereby a nullity and anything built on nullity is null and void, the ratification of NBAIS by the Federal Government (FG) remains valid, lawful, legal, legitimate and constitutional.

“MURIC calls on good Christians (and there is quite a large number of them) to continue to love their neighbours and wish them what they wish themselves. Nigerian Muslims are willing to peacefully coexist with their Christian compatriots. All they are asking for is equal rights, justice, equity, the right to self-identity, right to self-esteem and parity in all rights and privileges enjoyed by their Christian neighbours. Once again, we advise our Christian neighbours to eschew all vestiges of anti-Arabic and anti-Muslim paranoia.”

OLOYEDE: CALL FOR RESIGNATION CALLOUS, UNPATRIOTIC – MURIC

23rd May, 2025

PRESS RELEASE:

OLOYEDE: CALL FOR RESIGNATION CALLOUS, UNPATRIOTIC – MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has described the call made by the South East caucus of the House of Representatives and an academic body in the South East for the resignation of the embattled JAMB registrar as callous, ridiculous and unpatriotic.

MURIC spoke on Friday, 23rd May, 2025 via a statement signed by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“The South East caucus of the House of Representatives this week called for the resignation of the embattled registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) over the examination glitches which occurred during the 2025 examinations in some parts of the country (https://www.thisdaylive.com/2025/05/20/alleged-jamb-glitches-house-south-east-caucus-demands-oloyedes-resignation/).

A similar move was made by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) branch which also threatened to sue JAMB yesterday (https://leadership.ng/asuu-threatens-to-sue-jamb-over-utme-mass-failure/).

“MURIC finds this calls callous, ridiculous and unpatriotic. It is also parochial, myopic and condescending. It smirks of ethnic buccaneering and suffers from intellectual poverty. The idea is a willing partner in the desertification of analytical, critical and objective thinking. Our lawmakers and academics should rise above articulated tribal jingoism.

“Why does the South East desire to kill the goose that lays the golden egg? It is on record that Nigeria, particularly JAMB, has never had it so good. For whereas JAMB had been a consuming and wasteful institution in the pre-Oloyede days, the incumbent has turned the institution round, refunding billions to the coffers of the Federal Government (FG) on an annual basis since he took over.

“Record shows that JAMB under Professor Ishaq Oloyede has returned more than N50 billion to FG in the past seven years (https://www.thisdaylive.com/2022/12/15/oloyede-jamb-remitted-n50bn-to-fg-in-six-years/).

Exempli gratia, it remitted N3.51 billion in 2021 (https://www.thetorch.ng/jamb-remits-n3-5bn-to-government/), more than N2 billion in 2023 (https://businessday.ng/news/article/2023-utme-jamb-remits-over-n2bn-to-fg/) and N6 billion to FG in 2024 (https://punchng.com/jamb-remits-over-n6bn-to-fg-in-2024/). Yet in contrast, the cumulative amount refunded by JAMB over forty years before the emergence of Oloyede was a paltry N52 million (https://osundefender.com/jamb-remitted-n52m-federal-government-40-years/).

“Things got to an astounding climax this year that Oloyede told FG that JAMB under him does not require any allocation as its internally generated revenue (IGR) was enough for its functions (https://www.thecable.ng/jamb-seeks-exclusion-from-budgetary-allocation-wants-registration-fee-increased/).

“Is this the man the South East caucus of the House of Representatives wants to resign? Is this how we should treat our heroes? How many government agencies have returned money to the government in this manner? Why should our lawmakers seek to destroy a performer primus inter pareil? We contend that this is an attempt to demonise transparency while idolising corruption. They want to sacrifice excellence on the altar of mediocrity. Who did this to Nigeria?

“MURIC charges Professor Oloyede to ignore calls for his resignation coming from least unexpected quarters like the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) of one of the South Eastern universities. The rantings of institutionalized kleptomaniacs, political shenanigans, academic chalartans and ethnic demagogues is not worth being glorified with any attention. The call for Oloyede’s resignation is most unpatriotic.

“Our message to Oloyede is this, ‘Strive on in the glorious path which you have chosen. Ignore detractors, the envious and sworn enemies. Their desire is to rubbish you in order to justify their waywardness. They wish to make you regret your honesty. They are on a campaign for the recruitment of thieves like them from the infinitesimally small group of saints. Continue your good work. Resignation will send the wrong signal to good Nigerians who consider you their model. Aluta continua, Victoria ascerta’”

PRESS RELEASE:

INVESTIGATE JAMB EXAM GLITCHES IN THE NORTH - MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization has called the attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) to reports that the recent technical glitches which necessitated retaking of examinations in Lagos and the South East also affected some parts of the North.

In a statement dated Monday, 19th May, 2025 and signed by the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the group asked the authorities of JAMB to investigate the report and do the needful if found to be true.
