PRESS RELEASE: LEKKI TOLL GATE

19th December, 2011

PRESS RELEASE:

LEKKI TOLL GATE: MARK OF VISIONARY LEADERSHIP

The Lagos State government recently introduced tolling on the Lekki-Epe expressway. This was done after giving the road palpable facelift. The four-lane expressway is being turned into a ten-lane affair and work is still going on. However, dissenting voices are already criticising the government's introduction of tolling on the road while some residents have organised demonstrations at the toll gate.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) commends the vision manifested by the current leadership of Lagos State government in refurbishing Lekki-Epe expressway. Lagosians have suffered prolonged and untold hardship on that particular road . We have no doubt that the citizenry will soon heave a sigh of relief if on-going refurbishing and tolling are not disturbed.

The bane of Nigerian roads is poor maintenance culture. We believe that tolling is necessary to ensure regular maintenance. The brouhaha being generated is therefore unnecessary, misplaced and misinformed. We affirm clearly, indubitably and unequivocally that the completed part of the work depicts state-of-the-art engineering capable of transforming Lagos into a befitting mega-city of international standard. It is a pride for all Nigerians.

MURIC therefore urges Lagosians to be pragmatic and objective. While we recognize the right of individuals to express dissenting opinion, we warn that Lagosians should not cut their noses to spite their faces. We must not kill the goose that lays the golden egg.

Nigerians have been highly critical of bad leadership. We have blamed leaders for their ineptitude and myopic mien. Lagos State presently has a leadership that even cynics testify to his undiluted integrity and unequalled administrative acumen. There is an urgent need to start appreciating visionary and altruistic leaders so that like-minds can always offer their services to the country. We therefore appeal to Lagosians to learn how to encourage the initiatives of good leaders. Change must be general, not particularistic. As Nigerians ask leaders to change, the man in the street must equally be ready to change his mindset. We ask Lagosians to be part of the change by accepting the toll gate as part of their own sacrifice.

Those who plan demonstrations must do so with high sense of responsibility and professionalism in order to avoid hijacking by hoodlums who may commit atrocities under the guise of partaking in peaceful demonstrations.

Finally, MURIC warns Lagosians and civil society groups not to allow themselves to be used by reactionary elements, enemies of progress and political charlatans.

Europe feels the pinch of veto. Who feels it knows it. I have always said it: Veto power is satanic. Let Europe think about this, perhaps they will now understand what the rest of the world feel when America vetoes UN resolutions on Israel!

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - It was billed as a summit to save the euro. It may be remembered as the day Europe lost patience with Britain, as most of the continent threw its lot in with EU founding members France and Germany and committed to binding their economies ever more tightly. There was plenty of talk of history in the making in the week before the Dec 8/9 gathering of European Union leaders - the eighth this year. ...

SIGN SAME SEX BILL INTO LAW

6th December, 2011

PRESS RELEASE:

SIGN SAME SEX MARRIAGE BILL INTO LAW

The House of Representatives recently passed the bill on same sex marriage. If passed into law, offenders may be sentenced to fourteen years imprisonment while anyone found belonging to a homosexual or lesbian group will be liable to ten years imprisonment.

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) hereby identifies with this bill. It is a step in the right direction. It will protect the norms and values of our nation and sustain human procreation. It is our considered opinion that same sex marriage offends the process of creation. According to Qur'an 2: 30-35 Allah gave Adam a woman as a partner (Hawa' or Eve) and not a man. The Bible also affirms that after creating Adam (Genesis 2:7) God created Eve (Genesis 2:22) and not another male.

The Supreme Creator has ordered the nature of things in pairs, male and female, positive and negative. Only thus can the world run its due course. Therefore any attempt to legalize same sex marriage is not only an act of disobedience to Allah but also an attempt to cause commotion in society.

MURIC calls attention to the grievous perversion of the people of Lut as related in Qur'an 7:80-84 and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19:1-27. We warn that Jonathan should ignore Britain, Canada, America and other Western countries who have urged Nigeria to legalize same sex marriage. These Western countries are a bunch of advocatus diaboli who are bent on dragging Nigeria and the rest of the world into the deep sea of Shaytan.

Like drowning men, they are groping for any straw to hold or drag down to drown with them. We urge President Jonathan to quickly sign the bill into law before these Western countries drag Nigeria down with them. Jonathan must not succumb to the intimidation of neo-imperialists. We assure the president that Nigerians are united on this matter. We are solidly behind him.

We condemn Britain for threatening to withhold its aids to Nigeria if the same sex bill is signed into law. It is cheap blackmail. It is highly deplorable. We warn Canada and the United States to desist from interfering in the internal affairs of Nigeria. It is an assault on the sovereignty of Africa's largest democracy. It is totally unacceptable.

For having the temerity to threaten sanctions and the audacity to dictate to Nigeria, we demand that Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs should summon the British and Canadian High Commissioners to Nigeria as well as the American Ambassador to demand an explanation.

Finally, we recognize the need for government to create an enabling environment for the rehabilitation of homosexuals and lesbians. The physiological condition which compels unconventional sexual behavior requires proper understanding. We therefore urge government to assist people in this condition to receive proper expert counseling with a view to reforming and returning those affected to normal sex life.

STOP SECTARIAN DIFFERENCES

ABUSE OF MUSLIMS' RIGHTS IN ARAB COUNTRIES

There is a disturbing trend in the ongoing Arab Spring that must be addressed. In Syria, Sunnis are targeted by the Assad regime. In Bahrain, Shiites who constitute more than 70% of the population are the victims of a vicious repression. The story is the same in Yemen, Oman, Kuwait, Emirates, etc. Already, Shiites in Saudi Arabia are protesting against the monarch's anti-Shiite policies. This is unacceptable to the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).

Muhammad Iqbal (1876 – 1938) was right when he said, "Nothing is wrong with Islam. All the wrong there is is in our way of being Muslims". Muhammad Assad, author of The Road to Mecca, also affirmed, "It was not the Muslims that had made Islam great. It was Islam that had made the Muslims great".

The Muslim rulers of today are getting deeper and deeper into turmoil because they are following their whims and caprices. This was not the vision of the four Orthodox Khulafa'. They were neither Sunnis nor Shiites. Neither does it conform in any way with the ideas of classical Muslim thinkers like Ibn Khaldun, Ibn Arabi, Ibn Rushd, Al-Mawardi or modern reformers like Muhammad Iqbal, Jamal Ad-Din al-Afghani (1839 – 1897), Ibn Taymiyyah, etc.

Why must Muslim rulers allow oppression on the basis of sectarian differences? MURIC affirms that a Muslim is a Muslim regardless of his sectarian leaning. All men and women who believe in La ilaha ila Allah Muhammadun Rasulullahi are Muslims whatever their various differences in race, colour, sex or sect.

Prophet Muhammad was not a Sunni. Neither was he a Shiite. We therefore call on Muslims around the globe to put an immediate stop to sectarian struggles. The West is cashing in on this weakness among Muslims to divide and rule them. It was used by America in Iraq. The majority Shiites gave Saddam Hussein away. US forces penetrated so easily because the Shiites supported the invaders.

It is an irony of fate that the West today is identifying lapses in governance in the lands of Muslims whereas the principles of good governance are deeply embedded in the teachings of Islam. MURIC therefore urges all Muslim rulers to tow the path of justice, fair play, equal rights and the rule of law. Only urgent reforms aimed at good governance can placate the hitherto silent majorities. We lay great emphasis on the need to eschew sectarian killings and political persecution.
