POSTPONE NYSC CAMP OVER CORONA VIRUS – MURIC

11th March, 2020

PRESS RELEASE:
POSTPONE NYSC CAMP OVER CORONA VIRUS – MURIC

Authorities of the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) on Sunday 8th March, 2020 told youth corpers not to panic over the Corona virus outbreak around the world. According to the NYSC, certain preventive measures have been put in place to prevent any outbreak of the virus in its 37 orientation camps scattered nationwide. The exercise for Batch A 2020 takes off in about a week’s time.

But an Islamic human rights group thinks otherwise. In a statement distributed to the media by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Wednesday, 11th March, 2020, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), expressed doubts over the wisdom behind the resolve of the NYSC to carry on with the orientation exercise in the face of worldwide outbreaks.

“Available records show that Corona Virus which originated in Wuhan, China, has killed more than 4,000 people and infected over 116,000 across the world. The US alone has reported 14 deaths and about 240 cases of infection. An exercise that attracts about 350,000 Nigerian graduates annually deserves more caution.

“While we agree that the outbreak is not the fault of NYSC officials, we insist that the planning of the orientation camps should take into cognisance the reality on ground. To be on the safe side, the exercise should be postponed by one or two months. We are talking of 350,000 skilled Nigerians. These are our children. They are the hope of this country. We should not put their lives at risk.

“Events are being postponed across the world. Saudi Arabia, a highly conservative country, saw wisdom in halting its annual Umrah (lesser pilgrimage). The Dalai Lama has canceled all future public events indefinitely due to the outbreak. FIFA has postponed the Asian qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup. Matches are being played in Europe without spectators. Also, the World Athletics Indoor Championships will be postponed until 2021 because of the outbreak. South by Southwest (SXSW), an annual media festival in Austin, Texas, was canceled five days ago (March 6) due to the outbreak. NYSC cannot afford to be too clever by one.

“While we commend the Federal Government (FG) for steps taken so far to curtail the spread of the novel virus, we warn that an assemblage of youths across the nation who are expected to stick together all day for one whole month is too dangerous at this point in time. We should not be deceived by the fact that only two infections have been reported so far. A stitch in time saves nine. Any mishap will be blamed on the FG. We therefore suggest an immediate suspension of all preparations for the 2020 Batch A orientation exercise in the interest of public safety until the coast is clear.”

STATEMENT BY THE ALLIANCE FOR THE PROTECTION OF YORUBA MUSLIMS (APYM): WE ARE WITH MURIC, AKINTOLA IS NOT A TROUBLE-MAKER

The press statement below was issued by fifteen (15) Islamic organisations in reaction to false allegations recently made against Professor Ishaq Akintola and his organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), by a faceless ‘Islamic’ organization.

ALLIANCE FOR THE PROTECTION OF YORUBA MUSLIMS (APYM)
RESPONSE TO VERBAL ATTACKS ON
PROFESSOR AKINTOLA AND MURIC
9th March, 2020.
PRESS RELEASE
WE ARE WITH MURIC, AKINTOLA IS NOT A TROUBLE-MAKER
Our attention has been drawn to a press statement which was published on 29th January, 2020 and credited to a self-styled National Coordinator of a faceless Coalition of Progressive Yoruba Islamic Groups in which one Mukhtar described our brother, Prof. Ishaq Akintola as “an extremist and a sadist” (https://www.naijanews.com/2020/01/29/muslim-groups-roast-muric-boss-over-comments-on-amotekun/; https://advocate.ng/2020/01/muslim-groups-roast-muric-boss-over-comments-on-amotekun/).
We are abashed by the gargantuan ignorance of Mukhtar Okunade who was not only beclouded by ethnic sentimentality but also writing a script for some faceless groups in defaming the character and personality of a renowned Professor of Islamic Studies.
We categorically disown this statement. We know Akintola as an erudite Islamic scholar, Professor of Islamic Studies, a human rights activist and Director of Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC). We call the attention of Nigerians to the anomalies in the statement issued by the fake coalition.
Firstly, only one person issued the statement because the name of only one person was mentioned (one faceless and unknown Mukhtar Okunade). How can only one person write for a coalition of organisations? Who are the other Muslims in the group and which Islamic organisations are in the coalition? We contend that even the so called ‘Mukhtar Okunade’ may not exist. If he really exists, we challenge him to walk into the secretariat of the Muslim Ummah of South Western Nigeria (MUSWEN) and simply introduce himself.
Secondly, although the writer claimed he was writing on behalf of the so called Coalition of Progressive Yoruba Islamic Groups, he failed to mention the names of the Islamic groups who formed the ‘coalition’. He could not even mention a single Islamic organization in the coalition. This is very strange and it raises serious doubts about the genuineness of the allegations made against Professor Akintola. To that extent, therefore, the ‘coalition’ is a fraud used by fraudsters to attack and discredit a reputable international scholar and a social crusader of the caliber of Professor Ishaq Akintola.
If this fake ‘coalition’ has no members and they cannot come out in the open to mention the Islamic organisations that form the group, we hereby mention the names of Islamic organisations that are in our own Alliance for the Protection of Yoruba Muslims (APYM).
Our alliance includes the National Council of Muslim Youth Organisations (NACOMYO), Federation of Muslim Women Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), Muslim Students Sociaty of Nigeria (MSSN), The Muslim Congress (TMC), Muslims in National Development (MIND), Muslim Public Affairs Center (MPAC), Markaz al-Dawah, Risalatul Haq Dawah Society International, Association of Muslim Crosscheckers of Nigeria, Jama’at Taawunil Muslimeen, Federation of Ahlu Sunna of Nigeria, etc.
We are fifteen (15) different Islamic organisations and we are all well known in South West Nigeria. Also, we are all Yoruba indigenes. In addition, the names of the leaders of all the fifteen organisations are mentioned below as signatories to this press statement. The difference will be very clear if this statement of ours is compared to the one issued by the fake coalition which attacked Professor Akintola. Fifteen credible and well-known Muslim leaders signed this statement whereas only one name is mentioned in the statement of the fake coalition. Again, the names of the fifteen Islamic organisations that formed this alliance are mentioned here whereas the names of the Islamic organisations who formed the fake anti-Akintola coalition were not mentioned. Who is lying then? Who is engaging in fraud?
We stand in solidarity with MURIC and its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola. We are also aware of threats to assassinate Professor Akintola. We are not violent people but we will ensure that anybody who attacks Akintola faces the full wrath of the law because we are not going to sit down idly watching enemies of Islam attack a true defender of our faith. We are watching the situation. We appeal to the law enforcement agencies to do everything within their power in maintaining law and order. Nothing must happen to Akintola or any of his aides.
The allegation made by the fake coalition that Akintola wanted to destabilize Yorubaland and cause crisis in Nigeria is baseless and unfounded. It is well known that the motto of MURIC is “Dialogue, Not Violence”. Also, the group has never engaged in any violent act, instead, it has always worked for a better Nigeria since its inception in 1994. MURIC has always promoted a united Nigeria. The human rights organization has also been consistent in its support for the war against corruption and indiscipline.
More importantly, it is on record that Professor Akintola and MURIC have vehemently condemned Boko Haram, terrorism and all forms of violence in press statements which are still available online. The fake coalition’s allegation against him is therefore very wicked, crude and a distortion of facts.
It is equally worthy of note that MURIC’s stand on Amotekun was deliberately twisted. The group spoke in support of security. It only rejected religious bias as manifested in the request for birth certificate from churches before being recruited into the security outfit.
We observe that the so called ‘Mukhtar’ and his fake coalition are more concerned with “liberation of Yoruba, Igbo & South-south” from what he called “Fulani’s stranglehold”. As well-known Islamic organizations under the canopy of “Alliance for the Protection of Yoruba Muslims” (APYM), we are concerned with the unity of the country and the oneness of Muslims which transcend state and regional boundaries. Finally, we assert that we are with MURIC and Akintola is not a trouble-maker.
Thanks
Alliance for the Protection of Yoruba Muslims (APYM)

MURIC CONGRATULATES NEW NIMASA BOSS, BASHIR JAMOH

5th March, 2020

PRESS RELEASE:
MURIC CONGRATULATES NEW NIMASA BOSS, BASHIR JAMOH

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of Dr. Bashir Jamoh as the Director-General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA). He will replace Dakuku Peterside who has been the head of the maritime agency since 10th March 2016 and whose tenure ends on 10th March 2020.

Meanwhile the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has congratulated the new Director-General, Dr. Bashir Jamoh. According to MURIC, Jamoh’s appointment is timely, appropriate and well-deserved. The organisation’s comments were contained in a press statement issued on Thursday 5th March, 2020 by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The group said, “The appointment of Dr. Bashir Jamoh as the new Director-General of NIMASA is timely, appropriate and well-deserved. It is reward for hard work and dedication to duty. With an intimidating curriculum vitae and an inexhaustible work experience both within and outside NIMASA, Jamoh has the wherewithal to take the maritime agency to the next level.

“A man who is the current Executive Director (Admin and Finance) in the same NIMASA and the current president of the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA) cannot be described as unsuitable by any standard for the position of director general of Nigeria’s maritime agency.

“But there are more overwhelming facts to prove that Jamoh knows his onions and President Buhari has put the right peg in the right hole. He had served with the Nigerian Maritime Authority (NMA) from 1994 to 2003. His stint in NIMASA began in 2003 when he joined the agency as an assistant chief commercial officer, eastern and central zones.

“He rose through the system with different spells in the protocol and transport units, assistant director (statistics and research), etc. Jamoh’s selling point was his establishment, equipment and management of NIMASA’s ultra-modern training centre with capacity to accommodate 200 participants at a time. He successfully planned, managed and appraised capacity development of the largest maritime organisation for about a decade. He also elevated the agency’s training to world-class standard.

Bashir Jamoh holds a master’s degree in management from Korea Maritime and Ocean University, a post-graduate diploma in management sciences from Bayero University, Kano and a diploma in accounting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He capped the edifice with a doctorate degree in Logistics and Transport Management. An erudite scholar, he is the author of the book, Harnessing Nigeria’s Maritime Assets: Past, Present and Future.

“As an astute administrator and mentor, he has organised and facilitated leadership training and manpower development programmes in several countries including the United Kingdom, the United States, United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Brazil, Malaysia and Sweden.

“Dr. Bashir Jamoh’s personal website (www.bashirjamoh.com) reveals that the incoming Director General of NIMASA is a member and fellow of several prestigious national and international professional bodies. Some of these are: Fellow, Institute for Service Excellence and Good Governance; Fellow, Chartered Institute of Administration of Nigeria; Fellow, Institute of Business Development; Fellow, Academy of Entrepreneurial Studies; Fellow, Institute of Public Diplomacy and Management; Fellow, Institute of Information Management; Member, Chartered Institute of Personnel Management; Member, Institute of Maritime Economist (Canada); Member, Institute of Logistics, London; Member, Nigerian Institute of International Affairs & Member, National Speakers Association and Global Speakers Federation (USA).

“Jamoh is a recipient of numerous awards among which are Distinguished Merit Award for exemplary leadership achievements in Maritime Education in Nigeria from the Institute of Leadership and Development for the Public Good, Kansas, USA and merit award from the Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria.

“MURIC commends President Buhari for manifesting visionary leadership in his choice of Bashir Jamoh for the position of Director General of NIMASA. We are waiting for wailers and their characteristically divisive outcry against every appointment made by this administration. It is either nepotism, Islamisation or Fulanisation. But they did not see Afeniferisation when Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan was appointed on Monday, 2nd March, 2020 as the new Head of Service (HOS). Yemi-Esan succeeded Mrs. Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita, another Christian and Southerner. But the Muslims have not cried foul. Neither have the Northerners screamed blue murder.

There is indubitable evidence that balance has been maintained in the choice of Bashir Jamoh. The outgoing director general, Dr. Dakuku Adolphus Peterside, is a Christian and a Southerner while his successor, Dr. Bashir Jamoh, is a Muslim and a Northerner.

Our findings reveal that Southerners had even dominated the leadership of NIMASA over the years. Dr. Bassey U. Ekong was the founding director general in 1988. The agency has had twelve (12) director generals since inception and only two of these have been Northerners (Alhaji Munir Jaafar and Buba Galadima 1996 – 1998) while only three among the twelve have been Muslims. The rest have been Muslims.

For the records, other director generals of the agency in chronological order were John Egesi, George Mbanefo Eneh, 1999, Architect Ferdinand Agu 2000 – 2005, Engineer Festus Ugwu, Mrs. Mfon Usoro, Dr. Shamsudeen Adegboyega Dosunmu, 2007, Temisan Omatseye, Zaikede Patrick Akpobolokemi 2010 – 2015 and Dr. Dakuku Peterside (2016 – 2020). The number of Muslims who have headed NIMASA is therefore three (3) only while nine Christians have headed the agency. This data knocks the bottom off the buckets of those who have been claiming that Christians are marginalized in Nigeria. They have only been shedding crocodile tears, misleading Nigerians and the international community.

In conclusion, MURIC heartily congratulates the 13th director general of NIMASA and wishes him a successful tenure. We also commend President Buhari for picking the most suitable candidate for the job.

CRIMINALISE CHILD ABANDONMENT - MURIC

2nd March, 2020

PRESS RELEASE:
CRIMINALISE CHILD ABANDONMENT - MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has joined the call for parental accountability in Nigeria. According to the group, child abandonment should be criminalized in order to hold parents accountable and reduce the incident of child neglect.

This was contained in a press statement issued on Monday, 2nd March, 2020, by the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:
“We are worried about the large number of children roaming the streets. These are the leaders of tomorrow. Our children are our strength but that is only if we give them proper upbringing through a balanced education otherwise they become a sword of Damocles hanging above our heads. Nigerian children North and South are not receiving necessary attention. Thousands are hawking wares on the streets. They hold bowls begging in traffic gridlocks.

“The Glorious Qur’an chapter 2 verse 233 charges parents (particularly fathers) to provide the basic necessities of life including food, accommodation and clothing. It also compels parents to educate their children. It is therefore a gross dereliction of parental responsibility to send children to the streets to beg, hawk or engage in any form of child labour.

“There is also the eschatological correlate in the issue of child bearing. Allah is going to ask parents how well they take care of their children. This much is contained in kulukunm roo‘in, the famous hadith of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) where he made it clear that all of us will be held accountable for those under our care: leaders, husbands, wives, parents, masters, etc.

“It is sad to note that the permission to marry more than one wife which is contained in Qur’an chapter 4 verse 3 is often abused and misunderstood. More often than not, men ignore the proviso contained in the same verse that marrying more than one wife is only permitted if a man has the ability to provide adequately for the extra wife or wives and the children.

“The existence of about 10 million almajiri children is an alarming phenomenon. More so the gory sight of thousands of children and young hawkers running after vehicles for the purpose of making sales and thereby getting their daily bread is symptomatic of governmental failure. The state and local governments are the officials of first instance who are closest to the citizens. What are they doing to alleviate the suffering of citizens under them? Allah will ask them yaom al-Qiyamah (on the Day of Resurrection).

“These roaming youth are time bombs. We cannot solve the problem of crime proliferation without securing the future of our young ones. We must keep them busy with some vocation and means of income. But the state governments are not doing this. How then can we reduce crime in society?

“MURIC calls on the National Assembly (NASS) and all state legislatures in the country to set the machinery in motion for criminalising child abandonment. Men who fail to educate or train their children and allow them to roam the streets should be held accountable. It is not enough to arrest child-hawkers. Their parents, particularly the fathers, should be arrested, detained and prosecuted. There should be a law that empowers law enforcement agents to take an almajiri to his father’s house for the purpose of arresting the father and making him face the full wrath of the law.

“Imams are urged to reform the Friday khutbah (sermon) on the minbar (pulpit) to suit the needs of society. Our khutbah must be geared towards the fear of Allah and a better society. Conservative exegetical methods must be jettisoned. The minbar must target the reform of the Ummah (Muslim society). Imams must be prepared to look at their followers eyeball to eyeball. The days of sentimentalities are far gone. Only frankness can save the Ummah.

“This is the time for influential Islamic scholars to record lectures on the theme of parental responsibility and share the information through social media among their fans. Islamic organisations have an important role to play in this respect. They must begin a new season of re-engineering. The themes of their public lectures, seminars and conferences must reflect this re-orientation.

“MURIC charges Nigerian Muslims to re-examine the Islamic philosophy of predestination. We have clinched tightly to fatality at the expense of divine reality and all-encompassing knowledge of Allah. We multiplied the number of wives and children believing that Allah will take care of them. But sitting down and day-dreaming will not put bread on the table. Allah brings the rain and the pasture but you must plant the seeds and harvest the wheat. The concept of qadar (predestination) revolves around Allah’s knowledge of who, where, how and when we are born and die. The rest is either our responsibility or irresponsibility.

“In summary, MURIC supports the idea of severe punishment for fathers of children found begging, hawking or wondering in the streets. We advise Muslims in particular to strictly abide by the teachings of Islam on marriage by restricting the number of wives and children to those they can adequately cater for. We urge the NASS and the various state assemblies to expedite action on the criminalization of child abandonment. Imams, Islamic scholars and Islamic organisations are advised to focus on sensitizing Muslims on the need for parental responsibility”.
