PRESS RELEASE :

STOP STEREOTYPING MUSLIM WOMEN IN YORUBALAND : MURIC TELLS OGUN OFFICIAL, EVANGELIST JOSHUA

The Chairman of the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission (TSC), Evangelist Joshua Olalekan Ifede, yesterday singled out female Muslim teachers who wore hijab for tongue-lashing. The Muslim women were among other teachers attending a promotion interview. He went ahead to order them to reduce their hijab to shoulder level otherwise they would not be interviewed.

Commenting on the incident, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), accused the chairman of religious profiling, provocative discrimination, power-drunkenness and abuse of office. MURIC’s comment was contained in a press statement issued by the director of the Islamic human rights organisation, Professor Ishaq Akintola on Friday, 16th April, 2021.

The statement reads:

“The chairman of the Ogun State Teaching Service Commission, Evangelist Joshua Olalekan Ifede, yesterday, Thursday 15th April, 2021, ordered female Muslim teachers who wore hijab to the venue of the promotion exercise to reduce their hijab to shoulder level by tomorrow (Friday 16/4/21) or they would not be interviewed. The incident occurred at Lisabi Grammar School, Abeokuta, venue of the interview.

“This order is draconian, illegal, unlawful and unacceptable. It amounts to religious profiling, provocative discrimination, power-drunkenness and abuse of office. Evangelist Joshua Olalekan Ifede must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed.

“So it has come to this. We are still battling with how to rescue Muslim children from the shackle of school tyrants, now Christian officials are gripping female Muslim teachers by the jugular. This is going too far. Who said there is religious tolerance in Yorubaland? The female Muslim teachers addressed by Evangelist Joshua are all of Yoruba stock just like the evangelist himself, but that did not stop him from stereotyping them.

"An official message which went viral on social media immediately after the incident read, ‘Dear colleagues good afternoon. I have the directive of the TESCOM Chairman, Evg. Lekan Ifede to inform you to get back to our teachers in all the interview centers to dress corporately. Tell our Muslim Sisters to put on hijab that doesn't go beyond their shoulder. Whosoever that is not corporately dressed will not be attended to as from tommorow. Thanks and pleasant night. CCZS’

“This message is discriminatory, repugnant and unethical. It is a smear on the image of Ogun State Government. No state government official should set aside any particular group for this kind of humiliating treatment. It is also an audacious affront on the Muslim community of Ogun State in particular and Nigerian Muslims in general. The question, however, is whether Evangelist Joshua has the mandate of the government of Ogun State for this humongous embarrassment.

“We therefore call on the state government to clarify its position in this diplomatic conundrum. Ogun State Muslims will, thereafter, know the next line of action. Nobody should think that Nigerian Muslims will abandon their women in the hands of oppressors of women and certificated Muslim-haters. We assert that all options are on the table except violence.

“Evangelist Joshua’s action has shown that he cannot be expected to be fair to Muslim candidates among the teachers. The promotion exercise is also bound to tilt towards Christian teachers at the expense of their Muslim conterparts. We therefore demand the immediate postponement of the promotion exercise and the removal of Evangelist Joshua as the chairman.

“This man has exhibited extreme hatred for Muslims. We have no confidence in any promotion exercise conducted under his supervision. Evangelist Joshua has failed to separate the calling of the church from his official duty as chairman of the Commission in whose hands is the welfare of both Muslims and Christian teachers.

“This is common among church clerics who double as government officials. Many of them are in immigration, identity cards and driving licence offices, etc. They have instructions from hate preachers to make life unbearable for Muslims. We demand that the persecutions of the past must stop. These are days of infotech when the world has become a global village and nothing can be done in secret anymore.

“We strongly suspect that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has a hand in this ugly trend. There is no single Muslim heading the teaching service commission in any state in Yorubaland presently. Is this a coincidence? Is it also an accident that while an evangelist heads TSC or TESCOM in Ogun State, Oyo State TESCOM is chaired by a pastor (Pastor Akinade Alamu)? Mrs. Elizabeth Olabisi Ariyo is the chairman of TESCOM in Lagos while Chief Babatunde Abegunde (a Christian) heads Ekiti State TESCOM. Osun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) is chaired by Hon. Israel Ajibola Famurewa. Do we need to say more?

“Of course it is an open secret that CAN goes round insisting on certain posts for its members. The domination of the education sector is already a fait accompli by CAN and it is aimed at perpetuating the oppression of Muslim students and teachers.

“The Evangelist Joshua affair which occurred yesterday was made possible by this same arrangement and it has proved once again that religious tolerance in Yorubaland is a myth, a phantom, a mirage. It is sheer propaganda. Evangelist Joshua could not stand the sight of so many female Muslim women. Our Christian neighbours are not tolerating us. They are turning life into hell for us. Muslims are not free in Yorubaland.

“Our women are publicly insulted and stigmatised on account of their faith. Our daughters are stereotyped in school and denied access to the classroom unless they changed their identity by using Christian uniform as designed by the Christian colonial master. Our men are forced to remove their turbans and caps by immigrations officials and national identity card workers. Examination bodies send out Muslim candidates and force them to shave their beards if they don’t want to miss the entire examination. Yorubaland has declared Muslims persona non grata.

“But who will speak for Yoruba Muslims? Who will defend us? No single state assembly in the South West has addressed the issue of persecution of Muslims. In spite of the proliferation of Muslims in politics and their notable representation in the houses of assembly in Lagos, Ogun, Osun and Oyo states, no single lawmaker has deemed it fit to raise the issue on the floors of those honourable houses. Do we deserve this?

MURIC has a duty to remind Muslim lawmakers in Yorubaland that there is an eschatological angle to politics. Allah will ask all of you yawm al-Qiyamah (the Day of Resurrection) why you abandoned your Muslim brothers and sisters who are being persecuted when you have the chance to say or do something. You are accountable to Allah and He will hold you responsible.

“MURIC did not say so. Allah said it in Qur’an 4:75, thus: Why should you not rise in the cause of Allah to defend men, women and children who are oppressed due to their weakness? The weak ones cry out, “Our Lord! rescue us from this city (Nigeria?) whose people are oppressors; and raise for us from Thee one who will protect us, and send to us a helper!”.

“We draw the attention of the ideologues of Oduduwa Republic to the plight of Muslims in Yorubaland. Leaders of the groups agitating for Yoruba breakaway must admit that there is a strain in Christian/Muslim relationship in the South West and profer solutions instead of blackmailing and accusing it of formenting trouble in the region. It is the height of hypocrisy and it will not help the cause of the Yoruba nation.

“We therefore ask the Yoruba agitators, what do you have in stock for Muslim children and women? What is your plan for hijab? Is it as dictated by CAN? Is there any provision for civil shariah which Yoruba Muslims have been demanding for ages? The response of the agitators to these questions will go a long way in determining their readiness to tolerate Muslims or the plot to continue oppressing us.

IT IS FAKE NEWS: MURIC DEBUNKS PANTAMI/TERRORISM LINK

14th April, 2021

PRESS RELEASE :

IT IS FAKE NEWS: MURIC DEBUNKS PANTAMI/TERRORISM LINK

Some Nigerian newspapers yesterday published reports that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami is on the watchlist of the United States. However, The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organisation, has described the report as fake news.

MURIC’s reaction was contained in a press release issued by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Wednesday, 14th April, 2021.

The statement reads:

“Our attention has been drawn to a trending report that Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy is on the United State’s watchlist for having links with terrorists.

“It is fake news. It is a lie from the pit of jahannam. It is a product of malice, envy and evil desire concocted in the laboratory of the notorious ‘pull him down’ (PhD) syndrome. It exists only in the imagination of the authors of the evil plan. It will not stand the test of authenticity.

“Pantami is a honest, dilligent and uncommon Islamic scholar whose ability to combine his discipline with digital expertise has raised him above his peers and made him an indispensable asset to this country. It is only people with diseased minds who do not want progress for Nigeria that can make such malicious yet false allegation against him.

“We have been reading Pantami’s articles and watching his lecture videos long before he became minister and on no occasion did he pour encomiums on terrorists or their aides. On the contrary, he always condemned violence and terrorism. Therefore, those who claim that Pantami ‘spoke glowingly’ of associates of terrorist leaders are apostles of Lucifer and pathological liars.

“In fact, Dr. Pantami removed the rug from under the feet of Yusuf, the erstwhile leader of Boko Haram. This he did in several debates during his days as a university lecturer and those video tapes are still available for all to watch.

“We believe that Pantami’s detractors are after something else, otherwise the threat issued by Shekau, the current leader of Boko Haram (https://dailynigerian.com/in-new-video-shekau-threatens-isa-pantami-bulama-bukarti/) against the person of Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami would have been enough to dissuade them from embarking on this futile attempt at damaging the reputation of a great scholar and a patriot nulli secundus.

“Shekau’s threat against Pantami was made openly in a video clip on 13th February, 2021 (just two months ago) and it was public knowledge at the time. It prompted the Nigerian authorities and friends of the minister to urge him to take adequate security measures around his person and family members. Is it not paradoxical that the same Pantami whom terrorists threatened to kill is now being accused of being a sponsor and ally of terrorism? It is highly illogical.

“We strongly suspect that those behind the fake news are jittery over the minister’s revolutionary ideas particularly the ongoing linkage of the NIN with SIM cards. This development is believed to be giving criminals sleepless nights as it is capable of exposing their identities. This fake news is therefore an attempt to blackmail him into stopping the revolutionary linkage of the NIN to the SIM. Nevertheless, the fact that the United States embassy has dissociated itself from the allegation thereby giving the minister a clean bill of health is didactic and reassuring.

“MURIC is constrained to react to the fake story not only because of our deep commitment to upholding the truth and defending the innocent, but also because we have also been victims of such malicious and damaging false allegation in the past.

“We recall the false accusation against us that our director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, collected $200,000 from ISWAP and Boko Haram (https://abtc.ng/revealed-muric-receiving-funds-from-iswap,-says-mali-intelligence-chief/). Those behind the allegation could not substantiate it and nothing was heard of them again. We knew at the time that it was an attempt to blackmail us into silence but we refused to be silenced by men of evil. We denied the allegation and we forged ahead with the protection, promotion and projection of Allah-given and fundamental rights of innocent Nigerians.

“We therefore advise Dr. Pantami to ignore his detractors and continue the good work which he is doing for the country. Nigerians are proud of him. Nigerians are praying for him. Nigerians repose their full confidence in him. MURIC is solidly behind him in his efforts to digitalise the economy and rid Nigeria of criminals and unscrupulous elements.

“We invite the minister to ponder over the words of the messengers of Allah to Lut, ‘And when our messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account and he felt powerless. But we said, “Fear not, nor grieve. We shall save thee and your followers …’ (Qur’an 29:33). Again Allah assures those who believe in Him, ‘Do not lose heart, nor fall into despair, for you shall be victorious as long as you have faith in Allah’ (Qur’an 3:139).”

“We urge the Fourth Estate of the realm to demonstrate full professionalism when carrying out their duties. There is no excuse whatsoever for defamatory reports that cannot be backed with evidence. Facts are sacred and they must be investigated with microscopic accuracy. Journalists should not allow themselves to be used by selfish and callous individuals for their personal gains.”

HIJAB : CAN HAS SINISTER MOTIVES - MURIC

12th April, 2021

PRESS RELEASE :

HIJAB : CAN HAS SINISTER MOTIVES - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has accused the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) of nursing bad intention towards Muslims over the hijab saga. The Muslim rights advocacy group was reacting to CAN’s latest statement in which it said Muslim female soldiers were free to wear hijab on military uniform if that would deflect bullets (http://saharareporters.com/2021/04/09/muslim-military-women-free-wear-hijab-if-will-protect-them-bullets-%E2%80%94can?fbclid=IwAR3shJ6-fG8rvs9eZsr-5bijdNykxvPDh1GU0i0Z0zQRI3qWzmoXpf4jOkY).

MURIC’s allegation came through a statement issued on Monday, 12th April, 2021 by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

“CAN has come again. It never wishes its neighbour well. It is never Christ-like. Statements from CAN are, more often than not, ungodly and diabolical. Imagine CAN supporting the use of hijab by female Muslim soldiers ‘if it would deflect bullets’. That shows bad intention. Why the reference to bullets except for death wish for female Muslim soldiers? The only Muslim CAN loves is the dead Muslim. The only Muslim CAN will accommodate is the ‘liberal’, ignorant, half-baked and lilly-livered Muslim who has no mind of his own.

“CAN is beating about the bush. The question is, does CAN support the use of hijab by female Muslim soldiers or not? Nobody is talking about bullets here. Every soldier knows the implications of joining the army. Bullets are working tools for soldiers. They are very familiar with it. So who is CAN trying to scare?

“This is a poor outing for CAN. We expect a robust and intellectual interface in which CAN will expatiate reasons for objecting to the use of hijab by female military soldiers. But what do we get instead? CAN is asking if hijab will deflect bullets for those who wear it? That is pedestrian, infantile and jejune. This shows CAN could not come up with any good excuse against the use of hijab by female Muslim soldiers who wish to do so once it is approved.

“The old song of ‘no Muslim can wear hijab in our school’ does not apply here. The Nigerian Army belongs to all Nigerians, Christians and Muslims. It is the people’s army. Let it reflect the variety of the people’s culture. Army uniform should not be synonymous with Christian uniform. Nigeria will not run a Christian army or a Muslim army.

“We must ask CAN in turn : does the army uniform itself deflect bullets? If it doesn’t, why do soldiers still wear it? If our soldiers still wear their uniform despite the fact that the latter has no capacity to protect them from bullets, there is no reason under the sun to stop female Muslim soldiers from using hijab simply because the latter cannot protect them from bullets. We assure CAN that female Muslim soldiers who so desire will embrace the hijab without fear of flying bullets even if CAN is the one pulling the trigger.

“CAN’s reference to only Afghanistan as a country where hijab is used by female soldiers is mischievous. CAN’s intention is to mislead Nigerians into believing that Afghanistan is the only country in the world where female Muslim soldiers use hijab. But this is far from being true. CAN is being economical with the truth. The examples below will expose CAN’s deception.

“Female Muslim soldiers and police are now found in Britain, Ireland, Scotland, US, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Trinidad and Tobago, New Zealand, Australia, etc. In November 2018, a High Court judge in Trinidad ruled that Muslim women police officers are to be allowed to wear their hijabs while on duty. So what is Nigeria waiting for if countries that are more than 80% Christians allow Muslim women soldiers and police to use hijab? Even the population of Muslims in South Africa is just 1.9% and hijab has already been approved there also.

“The United States Army approved hijab in 2017 following a memorandum issued by the Secretary of the US Army in Washington on 3rd January 2017 under the subject-matter Army Directive 2017-03 (Policy for Brigade-Level Approval of Certain Requests for Religious Accomodation).

“It is not in MURIC’s character to make lousy, unverifiable claims. The links below confirm our claims:

https://www.islamicfinder.org/news/ireland-permits-muslim-police-officers-to-wear-hijab/

“Nigeria cannot afford to be the only country denying Muslim women their Allah-given fundamental human rights. Hijab is the right of every female Muslim whether she is a soldier or a police woman. For us, that is non-negotiable. We stand to be corrected, but the army and police can dig into their records to confirm that majority of female soldiers and police women are Christians. That gives undue advantage to the followers of one religion and this hijab advocacy is designed to create a level playing field for both Christians and Muslims. It is just too bad if CAN has a problem with that.

“Military, para-military and police jobs are avenues for reducing unemployment and it is the right of female Muslims to get those jobs. This is exactly where CAN is going but it will never say so. The intention of CAN is to reserve all jobs in the country for its members.

“As we speak, thousands of young, agile, willing, patriotic and qualified female Muslims are deprived of employment opportunities, particularly in the army and the police. They are reluctant to enroll because they know they will have to abandon their hijab. No pious Muslim woman is ready to do that. This situation impoverishes Muslims generally and impacts negatively on Muslim children in particular. As a result, a most vulnerable portion of the Nigerian population is sentenced to a life of abject penury.

“By the way, Nigeria stands to benefit immensely if hijab is approved for female Muslim soldiers and police women. It has economic, political and security implications. Economically, hundreds of female Muslim job seekers will be taken off the streets if they join the army and the police once they are sure that they can use the hijab with their uniforms.

“As for the political implication, a liberal policy which allows female Muslim officers to wear hijab will inject a huge dose of confidence in the Muslim population and give them greater sense of belonging.

Concerning security, the current security challenges facing the country has shown that this is the time Nigeria needs female Muslim women using hijab in the army and the police. The employment of women in hijab will enhance intelligence gathering, strengthen investigative power and widen the horizon of information supply.

“Criminologists agree that women in communities are sine qua non to the provision of information to the police at grassroot level. This is why women are known to have contributed immensely to community policing in places like Britain and Ireland because of their naturally keen interest in their communities.

“By simple inference, Muslim women in Muslim communities in Nigeria will find it more convenient to relate and confide in Muslim police women who use hijab. The phenomenon of female suicide bombers can be more easily and effectively curtailed by female Muslim soldiers in hijab.

“Finally, we refer Nigerians, particularly our lawmakers, to MURIC’s full page advertorials in the Daily Trust of Tuesday, September 24th, 2019, page 19 and The Nation newspaper of Wednesday, October 23rd, 2019, page 35.”

BLAME ANARCHISTS, BAD LOSERS, FOR INSECURITY - MURIC

8th April, 2021

PRESS RELEASE :

BLAME ANARCHISTS, BAD LOSERS, FOR INSECURITY - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has asked Nigerians to blame anarchists and bad losers among the politicians for the current wave of insecurity facing the country. MURIC made the submission in a press release issued by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday, 8th April, 2021.

The statement reads:

“It is unfortunate that many Nigerians are not prepared to say the truth concerning who is actually responsible for the current spate of killings, kidnappings, banditry and insurgency. Some Nigerians know exactly who to blame but fear will not allow them to speak up. However, MURIC has a duty to say it as it is no matter whose ox is gored.

“Certain conscienceless elements are manipulating information by spreading fake news in order to incite Nigerians against the Federal Government (FG). Bad losers among the politicians are also hell bent on ensuring that the present administration fails in all aspects of governance. There are also anarchists whose main objective is to sabotage security facilities, debilitate the security agencies and seize their weapons to unleash terror on innocent Nigerians.

“We saw these played out in the way the Saraki-led Senate on 6th April 2018 rejected President Buhari’s request for $1 billion for the purchase of arms for the security agencies. That rejection was a deliberate attempt to frustrate the government’s efforts to bring insecurity to a halt.

“Nigerians would have witnessed a drastic improvement in the security situation in the country had that request been granted. But the unpatriotic elements in Senate ensured that the request was blocked. Of course the same politicians turned round to blame Buhari for the worsening security situation. It shows the level of insincerity among Nigerian politicians and their lack of interest in solving problems facing the country.

“But real active sabotage of government’s efforts at solving the security challenge was seen during the last #ENDsars protests. The release of prisoners, the burning of police stations and the carting away of police guns were all symptomatic of a deliberate attempt to render the security apparatus impotent as well as a determination to unleash anarchy.

“Nonetheless, the recent terrorist attack on Imo State Police command headquarters on Easter Monday, 5th April, 2021 during which police armoury was looted and other security facilities destroyed speaks volumes regarding the determination of anarchists to ensure that we continue to have security challenge. The simultaneous attack on Owerri prison during which about 1,844 prisoners were released further confirms the diabolical objectives of the anarchists.

“The implications of both attacks in Owerri are far-reaching. Those who attacked the police headquarters had neutralised the nerve-centre of security in the state while those who released prisoners have turned back the hands of the security clock by several months, if not years.

“The arrest, trial and conviction of those prisoners was as a result of straineous efforts and investigations. It is only enemies of the society who can send dangerous criminals who had been incarcerated back to the society without allowing them to serve their jail terms, learn their lessons and repent.

“Nobody knows who those criminals will attack tomorrow. It may even be members of the families of those who set them free. A kidnapper whom you set free today may be the one who will kidnap your father tomorrow. This is not about defending Buhari. It is the reality. It is the truth and MURIC is not afraid of speaking truth to anarchists.

“How then can we, in good conscience, blame FG or Buhari for the rising wave of insecurity when we are the same people destroying security facilities and setting criminals free? It is therefore bad losers and anarchists who must be blamed for our worsening security situation. The panacea lies in the good citizens of this country coming together to expose enemies of peace. Nobody should think that another leader has the magic wand.

SET UP A TRULY NATIONAL PEACE COMMITTEE - MURIC

2nd April, 2021

PRESS RELEASE :

SET UP A TRULY NATIONAL PEACE COMMITTEE - MURIC

The Nigerian Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called on the Federal Government to set up a truly national peace and reconciliation committee. The new committee, according to MURIC, will replace the Hasan Kukah National Peace Committee which has gone moribund after losing credibility.

This suggestion was made by the human rights group in a press release issued by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Friday, 2nd April, 2021.

MURIC said, “Recent events show that Nigeria needs a truly national peace and reconciliation committee. We need credible patriots to intervene in the Jukun/Tiv crisis, the herdsmen/farmers saga, the anti-Fulani hype, etc. The committee will consist of men and women from all walks of life and from the six geo-political zones of the country.

“The loud silence of the Kukah committee amidst several crises facing Nigeria has confirmed the fear that it has gone moribund. The Kukah committee lost credibility after Rev. Fr. Hasan Kukah himself launched unprovoked vitriolic attack on Nigerian Muslims a few months ago. The cacophony of angry responses which his attack elicited proved beyond any reasonable doubt that his committee is no longer acceptable to majority of Nigerians as a national peace committee.

“It is a well-known fact that nature hates vacuum. The Kukah committee said and did nothing about the agitation for secession in the South West region. It has also elected to stand akimbo on the ongoing anti-Fulani hype and the herdsmen/farmers crisis which has all the paraphanelia capable of dragging Nigeria to another civil war.

“The lacuna created by the self-induced voice mail status of the Kukah committee needs to be filled as quickly as possible. We therefore call on the Federal Government to immediately constitute a truly national peace and reconciliation committee to supplant the moribund Kukah committee.”
