MURIC APPRECIATES FG, LASG ON PALLIATIVES

10th November, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC APPRECIATES FG, LASG ON PALLIATIVES

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has expressed deep appreciation to the Federal Government (FG) and the Lagos State Government (LASG) over the distribution of palliatives to cushion the effect of subsidy removal.

In a statement distributed to the media on Friday, 10th November, 2023, MURIC's Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, asked Nigerians to pray for the country and its leaders for peace, political stability and full economic recovery.

The full statement reads:

"We of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), hereby confirm the receipt of food items which include 20 bags of rice (50 kg), 5 bags of beans (100 kg) and 100 bags of gari (5 kg) as palliatives to cushion the effect of the removal of fuel subsidy.

"We express gratitude to both the Federal Government (FG) and the Lagos State Government (LASG) for providing the items.

"Although what we received cannot go round all our members even at the Lagos headquarters alone talk less of our branches in all other states, we still consider it a gesture worthy of appreciation. The act of giving it out alone is symptomatic of government's sensitivity to the hunger and anguish which are fast spreading in the land.

"We find it germane to call on Nigerians to pray for the country and its leaders for peace, political stability and full economic recovery. We appeal to Nigerians to exercise patience in the face of the ongoing hardship as there is enough evidence that FG and LASG are taking effective steps to address the situation. We should also note that the current hardship is not peculiar to Nigeria. It is a global phenomenon. Even people in the United Kingdom, France and the United States are going through hell.

“Acknowledgement of goodness and expression of appreciation to the giver is a cardinal teaching in Islam. It is a value worth more than a king’s ransom among Muslims. We charge all those who have received palliatives or other kinds of support from FG or their state or local governments to reciprocate with prayers and by supporting government’s projects.

“The Glorious Qur’an says, ‘If you show appreciation, I will increase my favours on you. But if you are ungrateful, verily indeed My punishment is severe’ (Qur’an 14:7). In like manner, the Bible says, ‘In every way and everywhere we accept this with all gratitude’ (Acts 24:3).

"MURIC reminds other state governments to emulate Lagos by setting the machinery in motion to ensure speedy and equitable distribution of palliatives to the citizenry"

CHRISTIAN GOVERNORS SHOULD EMULATE TINUBU – MURIC

8th November, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

CHRISTIAN GOVERNORS SHOULD EMULATE TINUBU – MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has called on Christian governors in Nigeria to emulate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by giving Muslims political appointments in their states the same way Tinubu gave Christians appointments at the federal level.

The call was made on Wednesday, 8th November, 2023 by the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"It is no longer news that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has exhibited the magnanimity for which Muslims are known by giving federal appointments mostly to Christians since he was sworn in. His generousity has also been acknowledged by Christian leaders (https://independent.ng/ncf-commends-tinubu-for-appointing-christians-into-strategic-positions/). It has also led to the dowsing of tension across the country over the Muslim-Muslim ticket imbroglio.

"We are of the opinion that this is a positive development in Muslim-Christian relationship.  We also believe that this should be allowed to cascade down to the states particularly in places like the South-West, South-South, South-East and the Middle Belt (Taraba, Benue, Plateau) where the governors are all Christians.

"Muslims in these states complain regularly of political marginalisation, economic deprivation, persecution and stigmatisation. The appointment of Muslims into political positions the same way President Tinubu appointed Christians at the federal level will go a long way in integrating Muslims into the socio-economic and political architecture in those states thereby engendering peace and progress.

"We therefore call on the governors of the South-East and South-South in particular where no single Muslim has ever been given political appointment to start changing the status quo. South-West governors should also allow the majority status of the Muslim population to reflect in their appointments in states like Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun. Proportionate reflection should also be allowed in Ekiti and Ondo states where the number of Muslims appointed into cabinets has never exceeded one only.

"The extent to which this change is allowed will signpost the readiness of Christians to allow genuine integration and religious tolerance both of which will pave way for peace and progress in the country as a whole. President Tinubu has set the ball rolling. He has also set an unprecedented record. Christian governors owe it a duty to reciprocate his magnanimity. We are waiting to see which governor will bell the cat."

DR ZAKIR NAIK: MURIC WARNS OVERZEALOUS INTERLOPERS

5th November, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

DR ZAKIR NAIK: MURIC WARNS OVERZEALOUS INTERLOPERS

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has warned those calling for the arrest of Dr. Zakir Naik to mind their business. The organization insists that the Islamic preacher is exercising his Allah-given fundamental human right of freedom of movement under international law. MURIC further warned that anybody found embarrassing the Sultan's guest will face the wrath of Nigerian Muslims.

The warning was handed down on Sunday, 5th November, 2023 by the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"A campaign of calumny and religious hatred has been unleashed on an international Islamic figure, Dr. Zakir Naik, who is currently in Nigeria. Dr. Zakir Naik is in the country on the invitation of the Sultan of Sokoto and President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa'd Abubakar.

"The campaign is being sponsored by Christians who are jittery. They are aware of the visitor's oratory, intellectual prowess and his amazing ability to convince his audience with indubitable facts. We remind these overzealous interlopers that Dr. Zaik Naik is exercising his Allah-given fundamental human right of freedom of movement.

“Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations guarantees the right to freedom of movement around the globe without interference. It says, 'Everyone has the right to freedom of movement and residence within the borders of each state. Everyone has the right to leave any country, including his own, and to return to his country.

"Those behind this shameful exercise are meddlesome interlopers and Muslim haters disguising as public commentators. They are motivated by hate, ignorance and gymnastic religiousity.

"For the avoidance of doubt, we warn that anybody found embarrassing an official guest of His Eminence the Sultan and head of more than 150 million Nigerian Muslims will face the wrath of Muslims in this country.

"Why are our Christian neighbours so intolerant? How many times have Muslims raised objection when Christians invite foreign preachers? Several Christian preachers have toured this country without any Muslim protesting.

"We recall the way Louis Farrakhan, the black American Muslim leader was disallowed from giving a lecture in Nigeria in 1986. That ugly and disgraceful incident was engineered by the same set of people. It must not happen again.

“To those who are pursuing this ignoble goal, we say, ‘Take notice that Dr. Zaik Naik is not Louis Farrakhan and Nigeria of 1986 is different from Nigeria in 2023. Nigerian Muslims of today, under a dynamic and visionary leadership can give measure for measure.’

"The whole world knows the Indian government for what it is when it comes to religious tolerance. The crimes of the Indian state against its Muslim population of 204 million Muslims are legendary. Muslim-haters in Nigeria should allow the Indian government to convince interpol to do its dirty works for it.

“India has failed to involve interpol because its allegations against Dr. Zaik Naik is religiously motivated. How did the Islamic scholar travel across several countries without interpol arresting him if indeed he is a wanted person? Let the Indian government convince interpol first.

"As far as we are concerned, Dr. Zaik Naik has not broken any known law of Nigeria. He is therefore innocent and free to move around and deliver lectures. We remind the law enforcement agencies of their duty to ensure the safety and security of this Islamic scholar. Nothing must happen to him. It is needless to assert that any guest of the Sultan is a guest of all Nigerian Muslims."

APPOINTMENT OF CHRISTIANS BY A MUSLIM PRESIDENT: THIS IS OUR CHARACTER - MURIC

2nd November, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

APPOINTMENT OF CHRISTIANS BY A MUSLIM PRESIDENT: THIS IS OUR CHARACTER - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has berated the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for exhibiting extreme intolerance over the Muslim-Muslim ticket affair before, during and even after the elections until they began to see real Islam through the magnanimity of President Tinubu, a Muslim president who has been giving Christians juicy and lion shares of appointments into his government. The Muslim rights organization rebuked CAN for its inability to trust its Muslim neighbours.

This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday 2nd November, 2023 by the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

"The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has eventually come out openly to express regret for its initial opposition to the Muslim-Muslim ticket. The Christian body also expressed happiness at the turn of events which made it possible for more Christians to get more political appointments than the Muslims.

"Northern Christians are now saying President Tinubu surprised them with key appointments. In particular, they expressed shock over the post of Secretary to the Federal Government given to George Akume and that of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) given to General Christopher Gwabin Musa, a Christian from Kaduna.

“They added, ‘As Northern Christians, we initially had reservations about Muslim-Muslim ticket of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Ibrahim Shettima, yet your inclusive governance has impressed us greatly (guardian-ng.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/guardian.ng/news/tinubu-surprised-us-with-sgf-cds-appointments-northern-christians/amp?).

"It is very clear that what transpired in the last few months, at least since President Bola Ahmed Tinubu picked a Muslim, Kashim Shettima, as his vice president was unbridled manifestation of bad faith, acute desertification of trust, accommodation of overloaded kegs of suspicion and giving room for careless and reckless comments capable of causing chaos nationwide.

“MURIC is shocked by the way majority of Christian clerics exhibited extreme intolerance over the Muslim-Muslim ticket affair before, during and even after the elections. This repugnant attitude continued until they began to see real Islam through the magnanimity of President Tinubu, a Muslim president who started giving Christians juicy and lion shares of appointments into his government. We are nonplussed by the inability of Christians to trust their Muslim neighbours.

“Nigerian Christians should not be surprised. Magnanimity is in our character. One major concern of every true Muslim is the fear of failing to extend fairness to his neighbour, whether the latter is a Muslim or not. This is a major teaching in the hadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The fears of our Christian nmeighbours over the Muslim-Muslim ticket was baseless, unfounded and misplaced. We can all see how President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is now dispensing justice and fairness to Nigerian Christians.

"Nonetheless, there is need to compare the generous accomodation of Christians at federal level by a Muslim president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to the continued political marginalisation of Muslims at state level, particularly in the South West, by the six Christian governors.

"Against the backdrop of how Tinubu is treating Christians at federal level, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos gave Christians 31 commissioners but he gave a meager 8 to Muslims. The second batch of nominees after a massive protest by Muslims was not better than the first as it gave Christians 12 but gave Muslims 6, bringing the total to 43 Christians against 14 Muslims. In Ogun State, it is ratio 16:4. Oyo State is 10:6. Osun is ratio 17 – 7; Ondo 15:2; Ekiti 24:1, all in favour of Christians. Worse still, no South Eastern or South-South state gave a single commissioner slot to any Muslim even though the governors know the Muslim leaders in those states and they are indigenes.

"This is the scenario in the entire South. It has always been like that and it was in an attempt to reduce the imbalance and alleviate the suffering of Muslims in the region that MURIC came up with this idea of having a Yoruba Muslim president. But nothing has changed. It actually became worse. Some of the South West governors, particularly Sanwo-Olu, decided to have a pound of flesh as his own reaction to the Muslim-Muslim ticket at the federal level.

"Who is liberal? Who is accommodating?  Who is fair? Who is sharing with his neighbour? Who is displaying the spirit of brotherhood? Who is being a patriot and nationalist? Who is being a true Nigerian? It is as clear as daylight.

Tinubu, a Muslim president is dishing out posts to Christians even more than he gives Muslims. Christian presidents were not so magnanimous to Muslims in the past. Obasanjo virtually sold the South as a whole to CAN throughout his 8 year rule. If Obasanjo could appoint two Christians from predominantly Muslim Kwara State, what stopped him from appointing two Muslims from predominantly Christian South-East and South-South? All the ministers from the whole South appointed by Jonathan were Christians. We had to meet Jonathan in Aso Rock to complain before he gave the South-West two Muslims only.

"See what we mean? But the difference is now clear, like that popular soft drink. Here is a Muslim president, Ahmed Bola Tinubu, appointing more Christians than Muslims until the latter started complaining and the former started praising him to high heaven. It really proves that wonders will never end.

"MURIC has taken a second look at the situation. Like William Shakespeare, we can see that 'Nothing is good or bad, only thinking makes it so'. In sober reflection, we have seen the good side of the lopsided appointments made by Tinubu, a Muslim president, in favour of Christians.

"We found wisdom in the words of the Glorious Qur'an where it says, 'This is what Allah has created. Show me what others besides Him have created' (Qur'an 31:11).

"MURIC says to CAN 'This is the cabinet of President Tinubu. These are Tinubu's appointments. They are Christian-loaded. Tinubu, a Muslim, is fair to people of other faith, so fair that they began to sing his praise. Show us the cabinets of your Christian presidents before him. Were they fair to the Muslims?

"Whereas people thought Tinubu has little knowledge of Islam, he has taught the whole country a huge lesson about how Muslims are tolerant, accommodating, just and fair.  This is exactly as the Glorious Qur'an teaches Muslims, 'Oh you who believe, be persistent in standing firm on justice, as witnesses for Allah, even if it is against yourselves, your parents or your relations, and whether it is against the rich or poor' (Qur'an 4:135).

"This is what Muslims can do. Magnanimity is our middle name. We can be magnanimous in victory. There was nothing CAN members did not do against us because of this Muslim-Muslim ticket. They cursed. They raved. They threatened. They said they would disgrace the Muslim-Muslim ticket by their numbers but the numbers numbered to nothing.

“How can Christian families of averagely 6 or 7 to Muslim families of 18 or 24? Most Christians are monogamous and most Christian families comprise of husband, wife and four children. Can this be compared to the Muslim family of two, three or four wives with three or four children for each wife. CAN’s census man must do his homework properly next time. The issue of numbers is not an area where Christians can expect to beat Muslims, not until cocks give birth to cows.

“But history is already at work to chronicle the free and massive appointments for Christians by a Muslim president. Majority of them did not vote for Tinubu and Shettima but they are getting appointments. This is what will go into history. The last time we checked, Mr. President's name had not changed. He is still Ahmed. But how have Christian rulers treated Muslims?

“Look at Bola Ige, former governor of Oyo State, a Christian. He distributed copies of the bible to all students in public schools. But when told that Muslim students want the Qur’an, not bible, he locked his office doors firmly. The message is clear. Christian rulers have just one mission: to convert Muslim citizens to Christianity or to persecute them until they submit. It is a ‘winner-takes-all’ camp. No sharing with others, no caring for others, at least no caring without hidden charges.

“But let it be on record that a Muslim president gave juicy posts to Christians in Nigeria. Christian clerics should not forget to mention it when next they go to America to address Congress. If Trump wins the next election, he must not forget to ask Tinubu, ‘Why are you giving Christians key appointments?’ the same way he asked ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, ‘Why are you killing Christians?’

“Our message to Nigerian Muslims is from Qur’an 3:139, ‘Do not lose hope and do not be sad. You will surely be victorious if you are true in faith.’ (Laa tahinuu, wa laa tahzanuu)
