MURIC APPLAUDS NAVY FOR ACCEPTING MUSLIM PARENTS’ WISH ON HIJAB

14th December, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC APPLAUDS NAVY FOR ACCEPTING MUSLIM PARENTS’ WISH ON HIJAB

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has applauded the Nigerian Navy for accepting the request of the Muslim Parents Forum to allow female Muslim students in navy schools to wear hijab.

This was expressed in a press release circulated on Saturday, 14th December, 2024 by the Founder and Executive Director of the Islamic human rights organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The press release said:

“The Muslim Parents Forum has scored another goal in its efforts to ensure that female Muslim students throughout Nigeria enjoy the dividends of religious freedom in the Nigerian democratic setting. In the latest development, the Nigerian Navy has manifested no opposition to a request from the forum to allow female Muslim students to wear hijab.

“A memo reportedly emanating from the office of the Minister of State for Defence has equally directed that female Muslim students in navy secondary schools throughout the country be allowed to enjoy this Allah-given fundamental human right.

“The memo was dated 7th November, 2024. It was signed by Raji, I. O., Director of Navy Affairs on behalf of the Honourable Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Bello Mutawalle.

“We applaud this giant step in Nigeria’s strive for true democratic practices. For, indeed, our democracy remains inconclusive so long as it allows one culture to oppress the other. Neither is civil rule completely civil until military authorities bow to government directives.

“Religious crisis will also become a thing of the past if no religious group suffers persecution. Coming from the Muslim Parents Forum, the request to allow Muslim children to identify themselves as Muslims is in tandem with the provisions of Section 38(i)&(ii) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which stipulates freedom of religion.

“Of particular interest is Section 38(ii) which lays emphasis on the interest and input of parents in places of education and the kind of instructions passed on to students. The Section says no person attending any place of education shall be required to receive religious instruction or to take part in or attend any religious ceremony or practice contrary to that of his or her parents.

“MURIC is indeed proud of the professionalism exhibited by the Nigerian Army in general and the Nigerian Navy in particular in their confrontations with criminal elements, their gallantry on the battlefield as well as their cooperation with civilian authorities in matters such as compliance with use of hijab by female Muslim students in military institutions.”

MURIC TO BAUCHI GOVERNOR: DON’T CREATE CHRISTIAN CHIEFDOM IN TAFAWA BALEWA

12th December, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC TO BAUCHI GOVERNOR: DON’T CREATE CHRISTIAN CHIEFDOM IN TAFAWA BALEWA

The Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala AbdulKadir Muhammad, has declared publicly that he would create the Sayawa Chiefdom and would site its headquarters in Tafawa Balewa Township. But an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has told the governor to shelve the idea because doing so will be tantamount to injustice against the Muslims of Tafawa Balewa who are victims of extensive religious violence.

MURIC spoke through its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola who issued a press statement on Thursday, 12th December, 2024.

He said, “Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala AbdulKadir Muhammad, recently declared that he would create the Sayawa Chiefdom with headquarters in Tafawa Balewa Township.

“MURIC frowns at this declaration as it implies that the governor has ignored the advice given by the Muslims on the issue. Good governance demands that the governor consults widely before making such a crucial pronouncement. It is therefore provocative, parochial and prebendal. This decision suffers from desertification of inclusivity.

“It is sheer manifestation of executive amnesia to ignore the massacre of more than 500 Muslims in the same city of Tafawa Balewa during the religious crisis of 1991, 1995, 2001 and 2011. It is also a betrayal of monumental proportion.

“Yet most alarming is the clause of religious apartheid inserted in the bill prepared for siting the chiefdom which contains the obnoxious proviso that only Christians can become a chief in the city. This is repugnant, abominable and preposterous. It is the most egregious, odious and insidious religious discrimination in any part of Nigeria in recent time.

“We wonder if the governor’s legal advisers and the state’s ministry of justice had any input in the drafting of this bill which, from all indications, stands in contradistinction with the letter and spirit of Section 10 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which says the Government of the Federation or of a State shall not adopt any religion as State religion. It is needless to say that the proposed bill has the capacity to create a Christian chiefdom.

“We advise the governor to retrace his steps. Handing over Tafawa Balewa city to Christians in Bauchi State is a dangerous step to take. It will not only escalate tension in the region but it will also further aggravate inter-religious disharmony beyond the state.”

TIJANI BORODO WILL TAKE SIGNATURE BANK TO THE NEXT LEVEL – MURIC

10th December, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

TIJANI BORODO WILL TAKE SIGNATURE BANK TO THE NEXT LEVEL – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has congratulated Alhaji Tijani Borodo on his recent appointment as the chairman of Signature Bank. The group described Alhaji Borodo as the man whom the cap fits.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, 10th December, 2024 by the group’s Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, MURIC rejoiced with the new chairman and expressed confidence in his ability to take Signature Bank to the next level.

MURIC said, “Alhaji Tijani Borodo, LLM, FIoD, FCIS, the Founding and Principal Partner of Tijjani M Borodo & Associates recently became the chairman of Signature Bank. It is a well-deserved appointment. Signature Bank definitely knows how to get performers. We congratulate him and we commend the bank for giving the lofty position to the man whom the cap fits. We have no scintilla of doubt that Alhaji Tijani Borodo will take Signature Bank to the next level.

“As the 18th president of the Chartered Institute of Directors Nigeria (CIoDN) and chairman of the Governing Council of the institute, we expect the bank to grow in leaps and bounds as Borodo injects tons of administrative dynamism accruing from decades of experience.

“Alhaji Tijani Borodo was the pioneer Company Secretary of FBN Holdings Plc. He retired from FBNHoldings in October 2017 after a successful career spanning over 29 years at the First Bank Group.

“He holds a law degree from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and a master’s in law degree from the University of Essex, United Kingdom. Borodo has attended courses and programmes in various first-class business and management schools outside Nigeria including Harvard Business School, the London College of Management Studies, University of Pennsylvania, the Wharton School and Kellogg School of Management, Illinois. He also has a robust board experience as a director of several prestigious companies.

“Tijani Borodo’s intimidating curriculum vitae makes him the round peg in Signature Bank’s round hole. This management guru is worth celebrating.”

MURIC KWARA BRANCH REPLIES ANTHONY KILA

9th December, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC KWARA BRANCH REPLIES ANTHONY KILA

Professor Anthony Kila recently penned an article under the title ‘A Threat Called MURIC’ in which he attacked the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organization. But the chairman of the Kwara State Chapter of MURIC, Barrister Taofeeq Jaji, has debunked all the allegations levelled by Professor Kila against MURIC and its leadership.

In a statement released to the media on Monday, 9th December, 2024 which was captioned, ‘A Rejoinder to Dr. Anthony Kila’s Article Titled “A Threat Called MURIC’, Barrister Taofeeq Jaji said:

“Dr Anthony Kila’s recent piece titled 'A Threat Called MURIC' raises important points about our shared responsibility for preserving harmony and inclusivity in Yorubaland Politics. However, the article’s characterization of MURIC (Muslim Rights Concern) and its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, as theeats reflects a misunderstanding of MURIC's intentions and activities. While it is commendable to seek the preservation of unity and democracy, Dr. Kila’s critique veers into misrepresentation, selective analysis, and unfounded speculation, which deserve to be addressed.

“Just as Dr. Kila asks, “How did we get here?”, one might similarly inquire how a group advocating for fairness and inclusion becomes the target of accusations of divisiveness. Let us examine the issues raised.

“Dr. Kila paints MURIC as a small but vocal group sowing unnecessary and 'toxic divisiveness.' This is both a simplistic and inaccurate depiction. MURIC, under the leadership of Professor Akintola, has branches across the 36 States of the federation, consistently advocating for the rights of Nigerian Muslims, a legitimate effort aligned with constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and freedom of expression. To deliberately construe this advocacy as divisive ignores the context in which it arises: a landscape where Muslims are underrepresented and misrepresented in public spaces, media, and policy.

“Besides, size is no determinant of impact or legitimacy. By this logic, any minority group championing its rights would be dismissed as 'unnecessary.' Rather than dismissing MURIC’s voice, it is important to engage with the substance of its concerns.

“The article accuses MURIC of intolerance for criticizing GOTV's disproportionate airing of Christian programs. It describes the criticism as a 'sort of fatwa' and frames it as an attack on Christianity. This is gross misrepresentation. MURIC’s demand for balanced representation is not about suppressing Christian content but about ensuring that Muslims, too, have equitable access to media platforms.

A diverse society like Nigeria thrives on inclusivity. When any group raises concerns about being underrepresented, the solution is not to label them intolerant but to engage with their grievances constructively. The call for dialogue with GOTV is not a threat but an invitation to address legitimate concerns about inclusivity.

“By the way, it is obvious that Kila attempted to mislead the general public about MURIC's complaint. Contrary to Kila's writeup, MURIC did not ask GOTV to stop airing Christian programmes. It merely protested against putting the Christian 'Faith' programme as a default channel to be viewed by customers as they switch on their television sets. It is needless to point out that even the 'Faith' programme has its own channel allotted to it (Channel 110) while Islam channel is in channel 111.

“Dr. Kila rightly celebrates Yorubaland’s history of interfaith harmony, but he erroneously suggests that MURIC threatens this legacy. Far from undermining harmony, MURIC’s work seeks to ensure that Muslims in Yorubaland and beyond enjoy their rights within that same harmonious framework. Highlighting imbalances in representation or participation does not equate to fostering division; it is a call for equity. Kila is attempting to silence Muslims.

“The article also suggests that Yoruba culture inherently separates religion from politics, implying that MURIC’s advocacy disrupts this arrangement. However, it overlooks the reality that politics and religion often intersect in public policy. It is within this intersection that MURIC operates, calling for fairness in public affairs, including representation and appointments. To conflate this advocacy with sectarianism is both unfair and misleading.

“Dr. Kila accuses MURIC of rejecting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s re-election bid solely based on his religion. This characterization is simplistic. MURIC’s stance on the rotation of political offices reflects broader discussions about inclusivity and equitable representation, not religious bigotry. While one might disagree with MURIC’s reasoning, dismissing it as religious discrimination misrepresents the group’s argument.

“Furthermore, Yoruba cosmopolitanism, as rightly noted by Dr. Kila, thrives on dialogue and merit. MURIC’s critiques should be seen as part of that dialogue rather than an attempt to undermine it.

“Dr. Kila speculates that MURIC might be acting as an agent for undisclosed ‘political principles’. This insinuation is baseless and detracts from meaningful discourse. By its admission, MURIC is a non-political organization focused on advocacy for Muslim rights. If there is evidence to the contrary, it should be presented. Speculative accusations without proof serve only to distract from substantive issues.

“Kila concludes by urging readers to guard against threats to harmony and democracy, naming MURIC as a present danger. Ironically, the very freedom that allows Dr. Kila to critique MURIC is the same freedom that MURIC advocates for Muslims to enjoy. Harmony does not mean silence in the face of perceived inequities; it means addressing them constructively while respecting all parties.

“To preserve Yorubaland’s enviable legacy of interfaith unity, we must engage with all voices, even those we disagree with, rather than dismissing them as threats. If Dr. Kila truly believes in protecting democracy and harmony, he must extend this principle to include MURIC’s right to advocate for fairness. Now it is Kila who does not want the voice of dissent. Kila has a phobia for Muslim freedom. In this context, Kila is the threat, not MURIC, not Akintola.

“MURIC is not a threat to Yorubaland’s harmony or Nigeria’s democracy. It is an advocacy group seeking to amplify Muslim voices in a society where they often feel marginalized. Dismissing their efforts as divisive ignores the substance of their grievances. Rather than silencing or misrepresenting such groups, let us engage in dialogue, address legitimate concerns, and work together to strengthen the harmony and inclusivity which we all cherish.

WE WILL MISS SHAYKH MUHYIDEEN BELLO – MURIC

6th December, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

WE WILL MISS SHAYKH MUHYIDEEN BELLO – MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has declared that the whole Muslim community of Nigeria will miss Shaykh Muhyideen Ajani Bello. The great Islamic scholar passed away in his hometown, Ibadan, Oyo State today, Friday, 6th December, 2024.

In a farewell message circulated immediately after his demise, the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, described the Islamic scholar as one in a million, a rare gem, a genius of all time and the most fearless of all preachers. Shaykh was so generous he could give his right eye to the needy. Even as an Islamic scholar, he gave scholarship to a large number of indigent students.

MURIC continued, “There is no Islamic scholar so loved by South West Muslims like Shaykh Muhyideen Bello. Every Islamic organization in the region yearned to listen to his insightful lectures while young and old Muslims listened to his recorded speeches for guidance and inspiration. Mammoth crowds attended his gatherings in their thousands.

“Shaykh Muhyideen Ajani Bello attended the popular Arabic Institute of Nigeria (Al-Mahad al-‘Arabi an-Naijiirii), Elekuro, Ibadan in the 60s. He later served as a missioner of the Ansar-Ud-Deen Society, Kano branch for decades. He retired to his hometown a few years ago.

“One of his last outings was the turbanning ceremony of the Executive Director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola, as the Jagunmolu Adinni of Nigeria (Islamic Generalissimo) which was held in Lagos on Sunday, 29th September, 2024 just two months ago.

“Shaykh’s death has left a vacuum that will be difficult to fill in Islamdom. The whole Muslim community of Nigeria will miss him. MURIC prays that Allah forgives Shaykh Muhyideen Bello. May Allah shower His Divine Mercy on him and repose his soul in Al-Jannah Firdaus. May Allah also grant those he left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

TAX REFORM: BUILD TRUST, ALLAY FEARS, DEMYSTIFY NORTH-SOUTH DICHOTOMY BEFORE REFORM – MURIC

5th December, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

TAX REFORM: BUILD TRUST, ALLAY FEARS, DEMYSTIFY NORTH-SOUTH DICHOTOMY BEFORE REFORM – MURIC

As the Nigerian Senate halts action on the controversial tax bills, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has advised the presidency to consult widely, build trust, allay fears and demystify the North-South dichotomy before reintroducing the bills.

MURIC’s advice came on Thursday, 5th December, 2024 via a press statement issued by its executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

“The Nigerian Senate has been widely reported as halting further debates on the tax reform bill due to the huge controversy it has generated (https://punchng.com/senate-halts-action-on-tax-reform-bills-stops-public-hearing/#google_vignette).

“In view of this development, we would like to advice the presidency to devote more time to robust consultation, to build trust across the divides, allay fears in all sectors and demystify the North-South dichotomy before reintroducing the bills. We cannot afford to destroy within days what took a whole century to build. Neither should the presidency remove the same ladder used by it to access Aso Rock’s hilly terrain when it has not even reached halfway yet and it will still need same ladder to reach the very top.

“The group also debunked a statement credited to its Executive Director in which he was quoted as saying that Islamic scholars should not comment on the tax reform.  MURIC said such a statement did not emanate from its office.

“Rather, what the Executive Director said in an interview that lasted less than two minutes was that he would not personally want to go into the nitty-gritties of the tax reform but he would leave those details to financial experts and tax gurus. He said nothing about other Islamic scholars and he did not say such scholars should not speak on the matter. We advise journalists to desist from twisting words to suit their whims and caprices.”

AVIATION MINISTER FOOLING NIGERIANS ABOUT OYEDEPO’S AIRSTRIP LICENCE – MURIC

4th December, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

AVIATION MINISTER FOOLING NIGERIANS ABOUT OYEDEPO’S AIRSTRIP LICENCE – MURIC

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has countered the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, for saying there was no way the private plane of privileged Nigerians, including Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Bible Church Worldwide, can leave the country directly from their airstrips without first securing clearance from relevant authorities.

In a statement issued by the group’s arrowhead, Professor Ishaq Akintola on Wednesday, 4th December, 2024, MURIC argued that the Nigerian system is too weak while Oyedepo’s figure looms so large that effective control of his airstrip will be almost impossible.

MURIC’s statement in full:

“The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, recently claimed that there was no way the private plane of privileged Nigerians, including Bishop David Oyedepo of the Living Faith Bible Church Worldwide, can leave the country directly from their airstrips without first securing clearance from relevant authorities (https://punchng.com/oyedepos-jet-cant-leave-private-airstrip-without-clearance-keyamo/).

“We are obliged to disagree with the Honourable Minister. In the first place, we all know that the Nigerian system is too weak such that scrutiny is easily compromised.

We should leave nothing to chance.

“Secondly, Oyedepo’s figure looms so large that effective control of his airstrip will be almost impossible. Nigeria has weak structures but strong personalities. We cannot trust this current system where ‘all animals are equal but some are more equal than others’. We fear that Oyedepo will soon become the owner of the ‘authorities’ at his airstrip.

“Thirdly, the Honourable Minister overlooked the Nigerian factor where religious sentiment and ethnicity continue to drag us down. Priviledged Nigerians (particularly religious leaders) are worshipped and Oyedepo is on top of the list. Who will search Daddy G. O.’s jet? Who will stop any plane from taking off from or landing on Daddy G. O.’s airstrip?

“The fourth reason is Oyedepo’s antecedent as someone who cannot tolerate even the Muslims in his own family. This is particularly horrifying and it is the raison d’etre for not trusting him. We will not touch Oyedepo with a long pole. Was he not the same bishop who refused to help his poor Muslim sister, Alhaja Asiyat Yusuf Oyedepo, unless the latter converted to Christianity?

“He told her to convert to Christianity or die in poverty (https://dailypost.ng/2012/07/28/convert-christianity-die-poor-bishop-oyedepo-tells-muslim-step-sister/). Oyedepo refused to release the Muslim sister’s corpse to her fellow Muslims in Omu Aran, Kwara State,  for burial after she died of the imposed poverty (https://thenationalpilot.ng/2021/01/11/confusion-trails-burial-of-oyedepos-aunt-aasiyat-1-month-after/; https://dailytrust.com/omu-aran-a-town-almost-torn-apart-by-a-secret-burial/).

“The fifth reason is that Oyedepo’s extreme religious ideology has infected his whole church whose membership runs into millions. Nigerian Muslims have received hostile treatments in the hands of Oyedepo’s members. Our organization has intervened in such cases of religiously  motivated maltreatment in the past (https://pmnewsnigeria.com/2022/10/25/muric-accuses-rccg-of-practicing-apartheid/).

Reason Number six: Oyedepo’s notoriety among Nigerian Muslims as a Muslim hater does not help matters (https://arewaagenda.com/why-oyedepo-hates-muslims/).

“Reason number seven: Nigerian Muslims cannot be safe in the hands of a Nigerian Christian leader who prayed for Israel to score ‘absolute victory’ in its war against the Palestinians. This is the same war which the humane portion of humanity has described as crime against humanity and for which the International Criminal Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Israel’s prime minister (https://www.pulse.ng/news/local/islamic-group-tackles-adeboye-over-prayers-for-israel-amid-war-with-hamas/7szbm0y).

“How are we sure that Oyedepo will not compromise Nigeria’s security to collaborate with Israel’s Mossad? Is the Honourable Minister prepared to stand as surety for the safety of Muslims in the hands of Oyedepo and his proper use of the airstrip only for the purpose the licence was granted?

“Reason number eight: Keyamo’s argument that Oyedepo’s airplanes cannot leave Nigeria without clearance is baseless because the danger does not lie in aircrafts leaving Nigeria or coming from foreign countries alone. Dangerous arms and various Christian militia in Benue, Taraba, Plateau, etc can use Oyedepo’s airstrip to commit atrocities against Nigerian Muslims. Such flights are within Nigerian boarders.

“Reason Number nine: we have also heard how aircrafts on special missions conveying ‘special forces’ try to avoid detection by flying ‘below the radar’. That can also be made easier where there is a ‘friendly’ private airstrip around somewhere. The availability of Oyedepo’s private airstrip will compound Nigeria’s security challenges.

“Reason Number ten: Experience has taught us that Christian extremists will not hesitate to use foul means to achieve their narrow objectives. Worse still, intrafaith conspiracy is common among Christian groups. Oyedepo’s airstrip can be easily used for moving extremists and their weapons around the country to beat securitymen who are usually on the roads. Afterall there is no ‘stop-and-check’ or ‘wettin-you-carry’ in the air.

“Religion is our bane in this country and we expect Minister Keyamo to know better. Talk of private airstrips for serious businessmen and women like Dangote and Otedola and hardly will anyone complain. But for a religious leader? It is too sensitive, too dangerous. Don’t cross the red line.”
