MURIC CONDEMNS NLC COMMUNIQUE FOR FAILING TO CONDEMN VIOLENCE IN PROTESTS

9th August, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC CONDEMNS NLC COMMUNIQUE FOR FAILING TO CONDEMN VIOLENCE IN PROTESTS

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condemned the post-hunger protest communique issued by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) for failing to condemn violence among the protesters.

MURIC's condemnation was contained in a statement issued on Friday, 9th August, 2024 by its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

"The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) yesterday issued a communique on the nationwide hunger protest after its national executive council meeting. While the communique rightly laid emphasis on the hardship faced by Nigerians, it failed to mention and condemn the wanton violence, looting and brigandage visited upon public properties as well as those belonging to innocent Nigerians.

“MURIC condemns this deliberate omission of the protesters’ violence in NLC’s communique. It robs the communique of objectivity, maturity and loco parentis status. Nigerians look upon the NLC as a parent body of all workers groups which is expected to protect, guide and instill discipline in them. We therefore frown upon NLC's communique for being long in sentiment but short in constructiveness.

"The communique also failed to empathise with innocent Nigerians whose properties were destroyed by violent protesters. There is no gainsaying the fact that private properties were among those attacked and looted and many of them belonged to workers. The protest created a platform for hoodlums to snatch handsets, cash and other precious things from innocent Nigerians but NLC said nothing about this. Instead, the union kept referring to 'peaceful protesters'.

"We acknowledge the genuine intention of some of the organisers whose wish was to peacefully articulate the plight of Nigerians on rising prices, hunger and poverty in the land. But the protest was hijacked in many states, leading to violence, looting, loss of lives and destruction of both public and private properties.

“NLC's communique failed to mention this crucial point. Such a statement is lopsided. It is capable of promoting anarchy, lawlessness and brigandage in future protests. Nigerians expected a mature and balanced approach from this parent body."

OMINOUS SIGNS IN THE POLITY: MURIC CALLS FOR PRAYERS

8th August, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

OMINOUS SIGNS IN THE POLITY: MURIC CALLS FOR PRAYERS

An Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has requested for prayers in Nigerian mosques and churches over what it referred to as ominous signs in the polity.

The request for prayers was made by the group's Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola in a statement issued on Thursday, 8th August, 2024.

The full statement reads:

"Nigeria is going through tough times. Strange things are also happening. Apart from the general hardship occasioned by the global economic meltdown, the ongoing hunger protest has thrown up unpleasant developments. These sad incidents included the introduction of violence, looting and burning into a protest ostensibly designed to be peaceful, protesters calling on the army to take over government and raising the Russian flag.

"Many Nigerians, including the protest leaders, were shocked to their marrows when some protesters began calling on the Nigerian Army to take over government. While this did not go down well with some of the leaders who are committed activists and democrats, it vindicated those who opposed the protest ab initio.

"Burning the Nigerian flag and raising the Russian flag were tragic reminders of the military coup in Niger a few months ago. France was expelled from Chad and Niger and the doors were flung open for Russia. Is someone trying to replicate this in Nigeria?

“Even the protest organisers did not anticipate such an ugly and sad development (https://dailypost.ng/2024/08/05/protest-displaying-russian-flag-calling-for-military-coup-treason-adeyanju/). It was a dangerous signal and it served as a warning to Western countries who are likely to be in support of the protesters in the name of democracy and free speech. It reminded keen observers that the communists are waiting at the ringside.

"These are ominous signs in the Nigerian political horizon. These two ugly developments, namely, the invitation extended to the military by protesters and the raising of Russian flags at protest grounds taught organisers of the nationwide protest one or two lessons.

“In particular, both incidents reminded the protest organisers that it is always better to consider the views of the other side because even if we know the beginning, no one knows the end of protests. Neither do we know all the underlying dynamics and the intention of other stakeholders, particularly those who may have sinister motives.

"These ominous signs call for prayers. Satanic propensities have enveloped the youth all over the world and we need divine intervention to soften their hearts. They are in too much of a haste. Materialism, particularly sudden wealth with little or no sweat is their dream. Their ambitions are often luciferous. They have just recently added quest for political power to their list of frivolities with the slogan ‘Not Too Young To Rule’.

"The ruling class also needs prayers. Let us pray for divine protection and Solomonic wisdom for the presidency. Let us ask Allah to plant the love of the masses in the hearts of our state governors, lawmakers and chairmen of local governments. Even the citizens need prayers to turn them into useful elements, not destroyers, for the country.

“Although we are in urgent need of change of mindset to put an end to the proliferation of bad citizenship #EndBadCitizens, adding it to our prayer points will not be a bad idea. Creating this scenario through our prayers can change this country.

"MURIC therefore appeals to all Imams in the country to use these prayer points tomorrow, Friday, 9th August, 2024 while Christian clerics use them this coming  Sunday, 11th August, 2024. Our nation is in turmoil. We must turn to the Supreme Creator for peace and stability to return to our land."

PROTEST: THERE ARE SKELETONS IN GOVERNORS' CUPBOARDS - MURIC

5th August, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

PROTEST: THERE ARE SKELETONS IN GOVERNORS' CUPBOARDS - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has revealed that there are skeletons in the cupboards of some of Nigeria's state governors. The group therefore urged Nigerians to turn their searchlights to the states if they are genuinely interested in knowing where bad governance exists instead of focusing on the center alone.

MURIC insisted that what some Nigerians are doing presently amounts to scapegoating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The revelation came in a statement issued on Monday 5th August, 2024 by the Founder and Executive Director of the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).

The full statement reads:

"We have noted for quite some time now how Nigerians dissipate so much energy on confrontation with the Federal Government (FG) at the center while they ignore the state governments thereby leaving the latter to do as they wish.

"A good example of lackadaisical approach to governance in the states is the way federal allocation to the states have tripled without anything to show for the increase. It was recently revealed that state governors have collected more than N40 trillion  local government allocations and efforts of a civil society group to make the governors render account is being thwarted by the governors (https://serap-nigeria.org/2024/01/28/account-for-over-n40-trillion-lga-allocations-or-face-legal-action-serap-tells-36-governors-wike/).

"After collecting monthly allocations of their states and doing little or nothing with it, these same governors still go aead to seize money meant for the local government councils and sit on it. The governors are amassing wealth at the expense of the hoi polloi while the citizenry blame FG. This is still going on in spite of the ruling of the Supreme Court that FG should be paying the local government councils directly.

"Even at that, the governor of Oyo State has reportedly requested that FG should pay money meant for the local government councils into a joint account to be operated by both the state and local government councils as if the two are into some kind of statutory marriage.

"Instead of commending FG for taking the case to court when the governors refused to obey FG's directive that the governor's should not touch money belonging to the local government councils, Nigerians demonise FG.

"It is well known everywhere in the world that there can be no meaningful development without tangible input at the grassroot level and that is where local government autonomy comes in. It is therefore paradoxical that Nigerians blame FG that is actively promoting local government autonomy while they ignore state governors who are strangulating the local government councils.

"Another example of bad governance is the way governors treat traditional rulers. Most governors persuade traditional rulers to canvass for votes for them among their subjects when elections are near. Woe betides any monarch who fails to please the governor. He may be suspended or dethroned.

"Yet it is trouble for the king whether or not he supports the governor because the next governor may belong to another party and he will come for a pound of flesh by deposing that king. So, head or tail, traditional rulers lose. They are being punished for no fault of theirs.

"Most of our state governors cannot stomach perceived opposition, particularly from traditional rulers. We affirm that it is totalitarian for governors to seek to control both the political structure and the traditional system. In particular, it is wicked to sack a traditional ruler sitting on the throne of his forefathers. A king is installed to rule for life while the governor has a minimum of four years and a maximum of eight. Why ruin the whole life of a royal father for a temporary political career? This is intolerance and tyranny. Interestingly, political intolerance and tyranny are major milestones of bad governance.

“Some state governors deliberately undermine efforts made by FG to ameliorate the suffering of the jamaahiir (poor masses). While FG recently revealed that 20 trucks of rice had been sent to each state government as palliative for the people,   thousands of bags  of rice were recently discovered and looted in Edo State after they had allegedly been hidden away for obvious reasons (https://punchng.com/anxiety-as-edo-residents-loot-truckload-of-rice/).

“A few lawmakers also fall into this category. We all remember the Christmas palliative given to lawmakers in December 2023. Only a few of them accounted for it till today. No wonder the citizens remained hungry. But they always blame FG.

"We must also remember that some state governors are yet to pay the minimum wage of N30,000 while some are owing salary arrears up to five months, including pensions. Why didn't hunger protesters go there to shout 'Hungry Dey'?

"We, therefore, assert clearly, categorically and emphatically that real bad governance is to be found in abundance in many of the states. Nigerians must stop beating around the bush.

"Of course some state governors can beat their chests regarding performance and they do not fall into this category of bad rulers. The numero uno in this class of performing governors is Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State  who has been showcasing constant distribution of palliatives to his people. He is closely followed by Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos with his dazzling city rail revolution. It is also on record that Lagos does not owe its workers a dime.

"Those who assume that MURIC is just singing the praise of President Tinubu or FG and the Lagos State Government (LASG) to attract attention should remember that we are still at loggerheads with them over certain differences. We disagreed with Tinubu for favouring Christians over Muslims in his ministerial appointments and we told him so. He is yet to make amends.

“Ditto for Governor Sanwo-Olu for giving Muslims 14 commissioners only but he gave the Christians 43 commissioners and also for failing to accept responsibility after a government caterpillar accidentally pulled down a mosque in Mushin, Lagos, killing two worshippers and injuring 15 others. Yet this must not becloud our sense of objectivity. We complain when necessary and objectively appraise as at when due.

“MURIC will speak the truth even when we have been wronged by those being criticized by others. That is maturity. It is also a matter of conscience. Ours may be powerless conscience but it is still functional. Shaykh Uthman bin Fudi (Uthman Dan Fodio) early remarked that conscience is an open wound, only truth can heal it.

“We beseech Nigerians to shift their attention to the states and local government councils in their search for bad governance and to stop concentrating on Abuja. It is high time we stopped pressuring the center. We should stop scapegoating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima. There are so many skeletons in the cupboards of state governors.”

TINUBU'S NATIONWIDE ADDRESS: MURIC URGES PROTEST ORGANISERS TO EMBRACE DIALOGUE

4th August, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

TINUBU'S NATIONWIDE ADDRESS: MURIC URGES PROTEST ORGANISERS TO EMBRACE DIALOGUE

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu delivered a  nationwide address today, Sunday, 4th August, 2024. Meanwhile, a faith-based human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed to Nigerian youths and the organisers of the ongoing hunger protest to listen to the father of the nation by accepting the offer of dialogue made by him in the interest of peace and progress.

MURIC's appeal was contained in a press release circulated to the media on Sunday, 4th August, 2024 by the Founder and Executive Director of the organization, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said:

"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the nation today, Sunday, 4th August, 2024. It was a moment for sober reflection as his speech was deep, revealing, thought-provoking and full of hope.

"His speech came in response to appeals by well-meaning Nigerians who advised the president to address issues raised by protesters.

"MURIC appeals to Nigerian youths and the organisers of the ongoing hunger protest to listen to the father of the nation by accepting the offer of dialogue made by him in the interest of peace and the progress of our dear country.

"This is the time for leaders of the protests to make themselves available for meaningful dialogue between them and government officials on the way forward. Such dialogue will be an avenue for better understanding of efforts being made by government to ameliorate hardship in the country. It will also serve as an opportunity for leaders to add their own inputs where necessary.

“MURIC appeals to the leaders not to allow themselves to be used to extend the protest period beyond today, Sunday, 4th August 2024. They should call off the protest as a mark of respect for the father of the nation and in response to the president’s nationwide address.”

IGNORE PROTESTERS' INVITATION TO TAKE OVER: MURIC TELLS NIGERIAN ARMY

3rd August, 2024

PRESS RELEASE:

IGNORE PROTESTERS' INVITATION TO TAKE OVER: MURIC TELLS NIGERIAN ARMY

A viral video clip showed a section of protesters yesterday calling on the army to take over the government. However, an Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has advised the military authorities to ignore the call. The human rights group described the call as revealing, defeatist and escapist.

MURIC's comment came on Saturday, 3rd August, 2024, via its Founder and Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The full statement reads:

"A section of protesters yesterday was seen singing praises of soldiers who were on duty to maintain law and order. They sang and danced, calling on the army to take over the government.

"MURIC strongly condemns this behaviour. It is a shameful abuse of democratic norm, recklessness in the use of free speech and articulated thoughtlessness. Such an invitation to the army to take over government can only come from people suffering from NAFDAC-certificated ignorance and desertification of civilized demeanor.

"Notwithstanding, this development is as revealing as it is defeatist and escapist. The call has exposed where the organisers of the protest are coming from. It also confirms the narrative pushed by the security agencies ab initio that
infiltrators were standing by to unleash anarchy on Nigeria if the ongoing protest was allowed.

“The protests could have been banned outrightly but the president, being a true democrat and an activist himself, allowed the protesters to come out to have their say.

"The Nigerian security agencies have now been proved right. By extending open invitation to the army to take over government, some of these protesters have proved that they are anarchists. By burning and looting, the protesters have proved that they are not peaceful protesters but rioters and insurrectionists of the Trump political  chromosome.

"They came with only one agenda, namely, to topple a legitimately and democratically installed government. The West must not ignore this fact. People openly calling on the army to take over government in Nigeria are undisguised threats to democracy, the rule of law and free speech. Calling for military coup in Nigeria creates scenarios similar to those of Chad and Niger in recent time. It poses serious threat to Western interests as well.

"We therefore call on the Federal Government to deal decisively with troublemakers among the protesters (within the ambits of the law). It is treasonable to invite the army to topple a constitutionally and democratically elected government. Those who can be identified in the video must be dealt with in order to serve as deterrents.

"MURIC advises the Nigerian Army to ignore this ignoble, repugnant and unsolicited invitation. It is the work of desperate politicians and bad losers. Nigerians will continue to respect a completely professional army. Military rule is out of fashion and it can only open a tsunami of sanctions on this country. The call to the army is not only archaic and anachronistic, it is also myopic and parochial.
