IGNORE ANTI-TALIBAN PROPAGANDA - MURIC

25th August, 2021

PRESS RELEASE:

IGNORE ANTI-TALIBAN PROPAGANDA - MURIC

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), an Islamic human rights organisation based in Lagos, Nigeria, has advised all men of conscience to ignore the ongoing anti-Taliban propaganda. The group argued that the same America which is smearing the image of the Taliban today was the same country that praised the Taliban to high heaven when the latter was resisting Russian occupation.

The group’s advice was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday, 25th August, 2021 by its director and founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“Horrible scenes of Taliban’s so-called atrocities are being shown on television as the latter gain control of Afghanistan and the United States pulls out its occupation forces. Also, frightening stories are being spread about the situation in Afghanistan.

“MURIC advises men of good conscience around the world to digest all these with caution. Many of the video clips being shown are old scenes from pre-Western occupation of Afghanistan. Some of the clips are doctored. They are nothing but attempts to give a dog a bad name in order to hang it.

“Already, America and its Western allies are neck-deep in an international conspiracy to ensure that Afghanistan becomes a failed state. This explains the frenzied evacuation exercise. They are encouraging every skilled Afghan citizen to leave Afghanistan. It is a calculated attempt to drag the poor country into a brain drain crisis.

“This they do by spreading fear and rumours of mass executions awaiting anyone who stays behind after the exit of allied forces. They ignore the announcement of general amnesty for all made by the Talibans and lay emphasis on possible clampdown on women and the imposition of Shariah law. Most of these fears are unfounded as the Taliban have already declared a more liberal treatment of women.

“We call attention to the fact that the United States organised fund raising activities for Afghan fighters during the latter’s armed resistance of Russian occupation. Americans referred to them as ‘Afghan freedom fighters’ at the time. But today they are called ‘terrorists’, ‘fundamentalists’ and ‘extremists’. We reject this double standard.

“It is also on record that in his speech on 21st March, 1983, ex-President Ronald Reagan, while mocking the withdrawal of the Soviets from Afghanistan, poured exceptional encomiums on ‘Afghan freedom fighters’.

“Reagan said and we quote, ‘To watch the courageous Afghan freedom fighters battle modern arsenals with simple hand-held weapons is an inspiration to those who love freedom. Their courage teaches us a great lesson, that there are things in this world worth defending. To the Afghan people, I say on behalf of Americans that we admire your heroism, your devotion to freedom and your struggle against your oppressors’.

“But history has repeated itself today and the pendulum has swung with America taking the position of the defunct Soviet Union. Today, any pragmatic observer can easily put those words spoken by Reagan in the mouth of Vladimir Putin. Karl Marx was therefore right when he said, ‘History repeats itself, first as a tragedy and later as a farce. History repeats itself times without number’.

“MURIC advises America to learn from history. America must allow the Taliban to settle down. Gunboat diplomacy alone cannot rule the world. Respect for human values and norms, including people’s different faiths is necessary to keep the world away from humanitarian disasters. George Santayana early remarked that those who fail to learn from the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them. With Vietnam and Afghanistan on our minds, we are constrained to conclude that America is repeating history and this is a pity.

“But we charge Muslims around the world to separate the wheat from the chaff. America’s imperialistic state machinery is a different cup of tea from the American people. The average American is kind and humane. That is why we must all reject hate messages which ask Muslims to kill Americans and other Western citizens. Such messages stand in contradistinction to the peaceful message of Islam. They are therefore unacceptable. Muslims are urged to be kind and accommodating to people of all shades, race, colour and faith.

“Our advice to the Taliban is to remember that Allah-given fundamental human rights are sacrosanct. The Taliban must avoid extreme measures. We urge them to respect the rights of women, children and non-Muslims as recognised in Islam and to distance their regime from violent and terror-loving elements.

“Bishop Kukah and other Nigerians who are in the habit of rushing to America to run their countries down are advised to think twice. No Western power will teach you what will benefit your country. It is always their national interest first. The way America abandoned Afghanistan to its problems is a big lesson for all.

“To the rest of the world, we can all see that the wind has blown and we have seen the ruff of the hen. It is glaring enough that America and its allies are spreading false propaganda to conceal their weaknesses and their complete failure in Afghanistan. America’s 20 year occupation has ended in abysmal failure. We therefore advise men of good conscience to ignore anti-Taliban propaganda.”

LALONG’S APOLOGY : MURIC TELLS GOV TO HANDS OFF TRIAL OF KILLERS

23rd August, 2021

PRESS RELEASE:

LALONG’S APOLOGY :

MURIC TELLS GOV TO HANDS OFF TRIAL OF KILLERS

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has told the governor of Plateau State, Dr Simon Lalong, that his apology will be accepted so long as he allows a free and fair trial of the 23 suspects arrested in connection with the killing of 32 Muslim travellers which occurred in Jos on Saturday, 14th August, 2021. MURIC spoke on the heels of reports that the governor had apologised to the people of Ondo State on the incident.

This was made known in a press statement issued on Monday, 23rd August, 2021 by the group’s director and founder, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“Governor Simon Lalong has apologised to the government and people of Ondo State for the killing of 32 Muslim travellers in Jos. The sad incident occurred on Rukuba Road, Jos, on Saturday, 14th August, 2021. Lalong apologised for the attack through his deputy, Prof. Sonny Tyoden, who led a delegation from the state to Ondo on a condolence visit, and to formally deliver the survivors of the unfortunate attacks.

“However, we believe that there are issues with that apology. That attack attracted nationwide outcry. Lalong must extend his apology to the government and people of Bauchi State in particular and Nigerian Muslims in general. These are the people whose sensibilities have been most hurt by the senseless attack and they need assurances that it will not be repeated.

“The victims of that brutal massacre were coming from Bauchi State where they had gone to attend a religious programme. To that extent they were guests of the Bauchi State government and any attack on them is an affront directed at their host. Therefore, Lalong’s apology is still half-hearted. He needs to tender a more comprehensive and all-inclusive apology.

“A special delegation to Bauchi to condole with Shaykh Dahiru Bauchi whose members were brutally murdered will not be out of place. The highly influential Muslim leader has expressed bitterness over the killing and demanded compensation for their families. Besides, Governor Yahya Bello visited the Shaykh five days ago to commiserate with him. The question is why should another governor be consoling those whose bereavement was caused by the criminal impunity of Lalong’s over-pampered people?

“MURIC joins Shaykh Dahiru Bauchi in demanding compensation for the victims’ families. All the victims of the unprovoked attack were bread winners for their families. We are still unaware of any arrangement being made by the government of Plateau State to cushion the effect of their irrepairable losses. Lalong’s apology will be more meaningful if the above moves are made.

“Most importantly, Lalong’s apology will be more acceptable if he does not interfere in any manner with the case in question. Lalong must take his hands off the trial of the 23 suspects arrested over the killings. We will frown at any interference, indication of interest or deliberate action or inaction capable of delaying or derailing the course of justice through the office of the attorney general or unnecessary transfer of the judge handling the case or any other means.

“MURIC calls for a free, fair and transparent trial of the murder suspects. We will continue to monitor the situation. Apart from Governor Lalong, we are holding a number of people accountable for fair trial in the two cases involving the recent killing of 32 Muslim travelers and that of General Alkali which occurred in 2018. An update on the case involving the general’s killers will give credibility to Lalong’s apology.

“Those we are holding accountable are Lalong’s deputy and those who accompanied him to Ondo State, namely, the Emir of Wase, Dr Mohammed Haruna; Yoruba Community Leader in Plateau, Chief Jide Olagbemiro, and Alhaji Nura Mohammad, Plateau Chairman of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Asociation in Nigeria (MACBAN). We expect these four distinguished gentlemen to go beyond just delivering a condolence message to ensuring that justice is done.”

MODAKEKE KILLINGS: LISTEN TO OONI’S APPEAL - MURIC

21st August, 2021

PRESS RELEASE:

MODAKEKE KILLINGS: LISTEN TO OONI’S APPEAL - MURIC

Five farmers of Modakeke extraction were allegedly killed yesterday, Friday, 20th August, 2021. The victims were on their way to the farm when they were reportedly ambushed in a village situated between Ife and Modakeke. Meanwhile, the Ooni of Ile-Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has appealed to the two communities for calm while an Islamic non-governmental organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has joined the Ooni in appealing to the people to embrace dialogue.

MURIC’s intervention was contained in a press release issued by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Saturday, 21st August, 2021.

MURIC said:

“Five Modakeke farmers were allegedly killed yesterday, Friday, 20th August, 2021. The victims were on their way to the farm when they were ambushed in a village lying between Ife and Modakeke.

“We are glad to note that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II has appealed to the people for calm. We hereby join His Imperial Majesty to appeal to both sides to embrace dialogue. The situation must not be allowed to escalate.

“With ‘Dialogue, No Violence’ as the motto of MURIC, our organisation cannot ignore any outburst of violence anywhere in the country. We therefore appeal to the Ife and Modakeke people to simmer down. We call on the youths on both sides to focus their attention on issues which can bring development to the two communities.

“We commiserate with the families of victims of yesterday’s tragic incident. We pray that Allah will give them the fortitude to bear the loss. However, we appeal to them to exercise patience and forbearance. We remind them that vengeance is a square peg while the first offence is a round hole. What we seek to avenge is never what we get in the end. But it raises one to the pedestal of saints and angels to forgive and forbear.

“Already, different versions of the incident are being spread on social media and some newspapers. That is why we must bring the situation under control. We therefore call on all stakeholders to cooperate with the security agencies who have since waded into the matter.

“Reports that about 100 Modakeke youth on motorcycles allegedly stormed Ile-Ife before they were stopped by Ife youths is very disturbing. That was exactly how Offa and Erin-Ile communities clashed recently. Ugly incidents like these are symptomatic of a desertification of unity of purpose and lack of mutual trust among the Yoruba.

These clashes create food for thought for those who are agitating for the creation of Oduduwa Republic. Is this how the components of Oduduwa Republic will always be at one anothers’ throats? Are they really ready to opt out of Nigeria?

“Ife and Modakeke are so close that people inside their houses in Ile-Ife can fetch water from houses in Modakeke and vice versa. The space between the two communities is a matter of six meters, not one hundered, talk less of one kilometer! Why will neighbours who are so close, who share the same language, the same boundary and the same environment not tolerate one another?

“This is why we commend the current Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, for his peace-making efforts. It is on record that the Ooni made peace moves towards Modakeke immediately he was crowned as king. Not only that, he toured major Yoruba cities and visited the royal fathers in an effort to unite the Yoruba people.

“We appeal to the youths of Ife and Modakeke to give Ooni’s initiative a breathing space. Dialogue is the way forward. Both sides must avoid mutual suspicion. No community can make progress in an atmosphere of insecurity. Schools and businesses will be shut down whenever there is a clash. Such disruption of socio-economic life drags communities back to the Stone Age. A word is enough for the wise.”

BAYO TIJANI’S DEATH : MURIC CONSOLES RADIO LAGOS, NUJ

20th August, 2021

PRESS RELEASE:

BAYO TIJANI’S DEATH : MURIC CONSOLES RADIO LAGOS, NUJ

Alhaji Bayo Tijani, a veteran journalist, died yesterday, Thursday, 19th August, 2021. His janazah also took place yesterday at the Ansar-Ud-Deen Mosque, Ebute Metta, Lagos. He was 79.

Meanwhile the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has condoled with Radio Lagos, Eko FM and the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ). In its message of condolence, MURIC described the deceased as a colossus in journalism, a humanist, extremely kind and extraordinarily generous Nigerian.

MURIC’s statement which was issued on Friday, 20th August, 2021, was signed by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

The statement reads:

“Alhaji Bayo Tijani, a veteran journalist, died yesterday, Thursday, 19th August, 2021. His janazah (funeral ceremony) also took place yesterday at the Ansar-Ud-Deen Mosque, Ebute Metta, Lagos. He was 79.

“Alhaji Bayo Tijani retired from Radio Lagos/Eko FM a few years ago. He held sway in those two stations in the late 90s and early 20s.

“The deceased was a colossus in journalism, a humanist, an extremely kind and extraordinarily generous Nigerian. A great mentor, he facilitated the industrial attachment programmes of many journalists in training and he was always ready to assist them. He keenly monitored the progress of their career and counselled them concerning their profession.

“Besides, Alhaji Bayo Tijani was an enterprising marketer. His hardwork and tenacity attracted the sponsorship of many Islamic programmes particularly by the alte duo of Chief M.K.O. Abiola and Alhaji (Dr) Abdul Wahab Iyanda Folawiyo. Some of the sponsored programmes are still running to date. Alhaji Bayo Tijani has therefore left an unforgettable legacy in Islamdom and indelible footprints on the sands of time.

“Alhaji Bayo Tijani was equally a mentor of many Islamic scholars, among them is the director of MURIC, Professor Ishaq Akintola. He was the first journalist to supervise the recordings of Akintola as an Islamic televangelist on Lagos Television (LTV) and Murhi International Television (MITV) in the 90s and early 20s when ‘Islamic Faith’ and ‘Telly Dawah’ were broadcast weekly.

“May Almighty Allah forgive Alhaji Bayo Tijani and repose his soul in Al-Jannah Firdaus. May He in His Infinite Mercy give his family the fortitude to bear the loss. May Allah also protect and bless all what he left behind, both living and non-living things. Aamiin Allahumma Aamiin”.

SUPPORT GOV ZULUM ON SURRENDERING INSURGENTS - MURIC

19th August, 2021

PRESS RELEASE:

SUPPORT GOV ZULUM ON SURRENDERING INSURGENTS - MURIC

Nigeria’s North East war zone has witnessed a dramatic change with Boko Haram insurgents and ISWAP fighters laying down their arms in their thousands. Consequently, the zone has been inundated with an unusually large number of ex-insurgents and fighters. This has created a huge challenge for the state government.

The situation has prompted an Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) to appeal to the Federal Government and the Nigerian Army to come to the aid of the state government.

MURIC’s appeal was contained in a statement circulated to the media by its director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Thursday, 19th August, 2021.

The statement reads:

“Nigeria’s North East war zone has witnessed a dramatic change with Boko Haram insurgents and ISWAP fighters laying down their arms in their thousands. Consequently, the zone has been inundated with an unusually large number of ex-insurgents and former ISWAP fighters.

“This has created a humanitarian responsibility for the state government. Consequently, the state governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, yesterday appealed to both the Federal Government (FG) and the Nigerian Army to assist the state in resettling the surrendering fighters.

“MURIC joins the hardworking Governor Zulum in appealing to both FG and the Nigerian Army to do everything possible in assisting the state government to resettle and reintegrate. A governor who spends most of the day with troops at the war front and most of the night walking around the city, visiting hospitals and teaching in classrooms to ensure that all sectors are working needs to be supported.

“We lay emphasis on the fact that peace-making is cheaper than fighting wars while meaningful development and growth can only occur in a peaceful environment. FG should therefore go all out in ensuring that its deradicalising process is accompanied by stomach infrastructure and economic resettlement.

“Boko Haram insurgents and ISWAP fighters who are surrendering should be resettled and trained in vocations that can enable them to cater for themselves and their families in future. Quick and meaningful resettlement will encourage the remaining insurgents and fighters to embrace peace.

“MURIC also appeals to the civilian population in Borno to manifest a spirit of accommodation and integration of remorseful insurgents and fighters. We warn against stigmatization of any sort. Returning fighters should be treated like brothers newly found. What they need is our understanding, cooperation and kindness.

“As we round off, we remind both FG and the Nigerian Army that it is more important to win the war than to win the battle. Battles are won in trenches but the war can only be won in the minds of men. Only a swift, effective and meaningful resettlement of remorseful Boko Haram insurgents and ISWAP fighters can win the real war.”
