PRESS RELEASE

MURIC CONGRATULATES YABATECH RECTOR, LUTH CMD

The Lagos State Chapter of the Islamic human rights organization, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has congratulated the newly appointed duo of the Rector of Yaba College of Technology, Dr. Engr. Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul and the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Prof Wasiu Lanre Adeyemo.

The congratulatory message was contained in the press statement released by the Lagos State Chairman of MURIC, Dr. Busari Jamiu Muhammad Ademola on Friday, 16th June 2023.

The Statement reads:

"We are extremely happy with the appointments of Dr Abdul as the  substantive Rector of the prestigious Yaba College of Technology last Month by the federal government of Nigeria. The appointment is well deserved.  Having worked with the first higher institution in Nigeria since 1993 and held many posts with distinctions, the new Rector is a proverbial round peg in a round hole.

"While we were basking in the euphoria of the appointment of Dr Abdul  as the Yabatech Rector, the news of the appointment of Prof Adeyemo as the CMD of LUTH was also announced by the federal government. Prof  Adeyemo is a seasoned academia and professional medical administrator who has proved his worth. His appointment is a testimony to his hard work and dedication to humanity.

"As an Islamic human right organization, we urge the two appointees to be God-fearing in discharging their constitutional duties as the leaders of their respective institutions. They must see their appointment as a trust (Amanah) to serve humanity and to please their Creator. The two entities they are leading today have track records for decades, therefore, they must work harder to uplift the standard of the institutions especially in this era of digital world.

"Lastly, we urge all members of Yabatech and LUTH communities to support the new Rector and CMD respectively in moving the two great institutions forward. Good leadership devoid of good followership leads to nullity. The Rector and CMD are human beings who are not infallible; hence, all hands must be on deck to support their administrations to achieve greater things for the betterment of Nigerians and humanity.

Congratulations Yabatech.

Congratulations LUTH.

God bless Nigeria.

Dr. Busari Jamiu Muhammad Ademola.

MURIC CELEBRATES YAU DARAZO, RIBADU, OTHERS

16th June, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC CELEBRATES YAU DARAZO, RIBADU, OTHERS

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has congratulated the eight newly appointed special advisers. The eight names were announced yesterday, Thursday 15th June, 2023. The group also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for picking suitable technocrats for each portfolio.

This was contained in a statement issued on Friday, 16th June, 2023 by the Executive Director of the organisation, Professor Ishaq Akintola.

He said :

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday appointed eight special advisers: Mallam Yau Shehu Darazo (Political and Intergovernmental Affairs); Olu Verheijen (Energy), Former EFCC Chairman, Nuhu Ribadu (Security) Zachaeus Adedeji (Revenue), John Uwajumogu (Industry, Trade and Investment), Dr Salma Anas (Health), Mr. Dele Alake (Special Duties, Communications and Strategy) and Mr. Wale Edun (Special Adviser, Monetary Policies).

“We felicitate with the appointees and wish them successful tenures. We urge each appointee to exhibit dedication to duty and loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. They must also ensure that opinions passed to Mr. President are people-friendly.

“This new appointment must be a soothing balm for those who had expressed fears about a Muslim-Muslim ticket. It was thought that this administration will favour Muslims only but it has not been so and will never be so. President Tinubu did not run a Muslim-only government as a two-term governor of Lagos State. He has not changed. His administration will be all-inclusive.

“It is noteworthy that five Christians were appointed special advisers yesterday (Uwajumogu, Adedeji, Edun, Alake and Verheijen) while three Muslims also emerged in the new administration (Darazo, Ribadu and Salma). Four among the eight special advisers may also have been from the Yoruba ethnic group. This information is important because of the well-known avowed merchants of misinformation in our midst who are always out to attack any Muslim president.

“While Muslims may be tempted to complain against this ratio 5:3 composition and other ethnicities may want to kick against the ratio 4:4 in favour of Yoruba vis a vis other tribes, we advocate patience because this is still an ongoing process. We should not count our eggs while they are still being hatched.

“In particular, we advise Yoruba Muslims who have always been marginalised in appointment matters by previous federal administrations not to jump the gun. All four appointments churned up yesterday as special advisers for Yorubas appear to be Christians (Zachaeus Adedeji, Henry Dele Alake, Wale Edun and Ms. Olubukola Arowolo Verheijen) but it is too early to raise issues at this time.

“Meanwhile Muslims in the region are anxiously waiting to see how many Muslims will be among Tinubu’s six ministers from the South West? All six Yoruba ministers appointed by Obasanjo were Christians. Ditto in the days of Jonathan until the Muslims went to Aso Rock to protest two years after. But even then he only gave them two ministers out of six. Will it be business as usual under Tinubu? To be fair to Yoruba Muslims or not to be fair? That is the question.

“Muslims in Taraba State who constitute more than 60% of the population but who have always been shortchanged in ministerial appointments are also waiting anxiously for the name of the next minister from the state.

“But one thing we cannot take from Tinubu is his uncommon ability to identify skills. Our new president is a skill hunter primus inter pereil. That is why none of the new appointments announced yesterday can be rubbished because they all have extensive experience and track records in their individual industries. Inclusivity is the only factor that critics can bring up but Tinubu may be able to joggle with that in coming appointments.”

VP SHETTIMA DID NOT INSULT MUSLIMS – MURIC

13th June, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

VP SHETTIMA DID NOT INSULT MUSLIMS – MURIC

An Islamic human rights organisation, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has appealed to Nigerians not to misunderstand Vice President Kashim Shettimah on the ongoing battle for the Senate leadership. The group specifically dismissed any insinuation that the Vice President casted aspersion on Northern Muslims.

MURIC’s clarification was made by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Tuesday, 13th June, 2023.

He said :

“There is a strong tendency for Muslims, particularly our Northern brothers, to misunderstand what Vice President Kashim Shettima said yesterday, Monday, 12th June, 2023 on the senate presidency. He was quoted as saying, ‘…The worst, the most incompetent Southern Christian is better than the most puritanical Northern Muslim for the presidency of the Senate.’

“No slur language was intended against Muslims in this speech. There was also no generalisation. It was directed straight at the Senate issue that is currently at stake. The Vice President was addressing the need for balancing of political posts in the country for the sake of national stability.

“The Vice President has not slighted Muslims in this conversation. Nothing in the speech is derogatory in any way. Shettima’s pedigree speaks eloquently in the area of service to the Muslim community. Although he has always been a liberal Muslim who ensures that Christians get their own due share of the dividends of democracy, Muslims have never been shortchanged in his scheme of things.

“As he repaired several churches in Borno, so did he build many mosques. His concern is justice, fairness and equity for all. As a devout Muslim, Shettima will not go out of his way to disparage Muslims or the religion of Islam.

“MURIC’s branch in Borno State has also submitted a report of his excellent standing among Borno Muslims. We also have full report of his many philanthropic deeds both recently and long before he became vice president.

“Nigerian Muslims in particular and the generality of Nigerians are therefore advised to ignore any mischievous insinuation seeking to pin any denigrating word or phrase on the Vice President against any region, faith or group over the issue of Senate leadership.”

MURIC BACKS NEW LAWS TO PROTECT LAGOS INDIGENES

12th June, 2023

PRESS RELEASE:

MURIC BACKS NEW LAWS TO PROTECT LAGOS INDIGENES

An Islamic human rights group, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has backed the move by the Lagos State House of Assembly to make new laws that would protect indigenes in the state. The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, revealed on Tuesday, 5th June, 2023 that the state would promulgate laws for the protection of its indigenes.

MURIC voiced support for the new laws in a statement issued by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, on Monday, 12th June, 2023.

The statement reads :

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, revealed on Tuesday, 5th June, 2023 that the state would promulgate laws for the protection of its indigenes.

“Obasa made reference to the coming laws in his acceptance speech after he was unanimously elected as speaker of the assembly for the third term. He gave hints that there would be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles. He said the programmme may necessitate ‘reversing all that are reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes’.

“There is nothing strange or new in the new laws which Lagos is planning to promulgate. The advanced civilisations of the world do it. Britain had its own taste of the Exclusion Bill in 1679 and 1682 during the reign of Charles II. America enacted the Exclusion Act in 1882 to protect locals from exploitation by immigrants.

“Even as recently as February 2023, Glenn Youngkin, the governor of Texas, United States, signed the Exclusion Bill 147 to bar citizens of certain countries (China, Russia, North Korea and Iran) from owning agricultural land or buying real estate in the state (https://edition.cnn.com/2023/02/18/politics/chinese-land-law-texas-virginia-what-matters/index.html).

“Every society whose indigenes feel threatened take recourse to the law for protection. What we are saying in essence is that responsible governments have a duty to protect indigenes wherever and whenever there is any element of existential threat against their cultural and historical heritage in any form.

“This is why we see nothing new in the new laws which Lagos want to enact. Already, such protections exist albeit in unwritten practices in several parts of the country, North, East and West. There are some parts of the country where non-indigenes cannot buy real estate. What Lagos seeks to do now is to commit such protective conventions into written laws.

“Every civilized society seeks to protect its indigenes from the bastardisations of globalization. It is even considered an abdication of responsibility on the part of the government when and if it fails to rise to the defence of indigenes of the state.

“Therefore, MURIC supports any legislation that protects the citizenry, particularly indigenes and the vulnerable in society. We therefore call on members of the Lagos House of Assembly to join hands with Speaker Obasa and expedite action on the bill of exclusion and protection.

All parts of Nigeria should seek means of protecting the heritage of indigenes. Every state needs such laws but as usual, Lagos must lead the way for others to follow. From Lagos to Mokwa, from Port Harcourt to Kaora Namoda, indigenes must be protected from overbearing hawks who make stupendous wealth on their land, yet seek to eliminate their ancestral heritage and leave nothing for the benefit of indigenes.

“We charge the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to exercise no delay once the Lagos Assembly passes the bills. Lagos must be sanitised. Complacency, excessive liberalism, indiscipline and impunity are the bane of Lagos. Obasa must strike when the iron is hot.”
